What? For Christ sake man, no. I just don't like randomly changing character's skin tones just so they can be POC.

This is human au. The author essentially colored them according to what race/ethnicity the show runners implied them to be (Garnet black, pearl Asian, and amethyst Hispanic?? I don’t remember.) As a Chinese girl, Pearl definitely feels Chinese to me. She’s got ballet, perfectionism, a piano for her background song, and sticks to the rules - not to mention an Asian voice actor. Unfortunately, I think that the artist just was just under the mark for all the color palettes for the characters. Garnet is harsh brown in a way that Garnet in the show isn’t (even when Steven dreamed Garnet to be human, her skin tone was pleasantly chosen, whereas this one is hard to look at.) Amethyst is perhaps too saturated a and dark a brown to feel Hispanic. The freckles are also hard to see due to this issue and her clothes aren’t saturated enough in comparison to her skin to and thus run together. And Pearl is a shade too dark and too saturated to feel Asian. Asian skin has variability and indeed can be dark shades or very light, so the artist has some choice here. But I think they did not use a good reference for dark Asian skin, as it’s not quite the same and doesn’t come across as Asian. The lack of shading or Asian features compounds this issue.

Ally Li Ally Li I must agree, I like the idea that they portray each race, but I do think they fall a little short on the color palettes. The character designs are nice themselves. As a Hispanic, I can confirm there are extremely dark and extremely light ranges of skin tones, but it just felt too black. Garnet being that dark is fine, but honestly, it’s just distracting. She’s hardly even brown, she’s literally black. And of course, those of Asian decent are famously in the paler side, so I’m not quite sure if they just didn’t pay mind to that fact or what? I understand artistic liberties, but it was honestly slightly distracting.

Ally Li Pearl isn’t asian though?? Just because her voice actress is asian doesn’t mean she is...
