CURSED Panels | Power Girl Licks Superman 

Powergirl was often lusted after by several heroes and villains, and regardless of outfit she was generally rather conservative and uptight as a person ( before New52 ). I think the Entity of Lust would have regarded her as a prize.

Kyle being Green with Envy was super low-hanging fruit, but they made it work. 😃

One of a few things i really like about this story is that its a brainwashing scenario that for once doesn't involve superman getting brainwashed yet again, im so tired of that cheap plot device

This panel still look cursed even IF you don't know that they are (kind of) related. It's just a weird thing to depict, no matter who the two people are.

Pacheco's art is amazing here, with dozens of characters, each distinct in facial features and expressions. Few artists really excel at depicting so many characters.

I really like your breakdown of societal stereotypes and how they affect certain comics, depicting these topics with matuarity goes a long way in understanding the issues while still being able to appreciate each of the individual parts that make up the comic.

An interesting thing that this put to my mind was the character of Lust from Full Metal Alchemist. Despite also having a character design that caters to the male gaze, she showed little to no interest in sexuality besides as a means to an end. Rather, her expression of her trademark vice was via bloodlust and unfettered enjoyment. Not really making a bigger point here, it's just always interesting to see a broader interpretation of Lust as something more than mere carnality.

That panel with the heroes as the Sins was outstanding. So much expression.

Ok, this video needs a follow up with a "cursed" panel I have never seen before and I've been reading comics for over 45 years! What was up with shirtless superman tied up by Lex in a cage. The art made it look that Supses was rather...ahem...excited at the situation and I need to know the context!

As far as weird out-of-context panels go, I like the Plastic Man panel that became the "powder that makes you say yes" meme.

I don't mind the hot girl represents lust trope. I feel like it's just as valid as any other take on the idea. As long as we get variations on it I'm ok. I like when they use a dude/animal/monster/non-attractive entity for it because things can play out differently and I don't always know where the story will go. I'd have probably chosen Plastic Man for this one. From what I remember, he used pervy jokes to mask his insecurities at one point. I think that would have been a decent lense to examine the origins of certain toxic behaviours. I'd probably make Power Girl sloth or rage. Her rage could come from losing Krypton / not being able to be there for Clark as he grew up. Her sloth could come from a hidden feeling of pointlessness. "Why put all of myself into rebuilding my life when it can just be taken from me again". Envy could also work. Maybe she is envious of Clark having been the one to make it to Earth and a part of her wonders what it would be like if she made it and he showed up later.

It’s always fun to see the context some of these out context panels you see circling around come from. The League’s and society’s relationship to one another and seeing the members interact have always been super interesting to me, hopefully that’ll be touched on by more stories in the future.

The context helps, but not enough. For the reasons you pointed out. Which is that Power Girl as Lust is less about her own character and more about the viewer.

I suspect that the face 'lick' was chosen because the reference material for the drawing was directly on hand. Robert Kanigher told a story of an artist not drawing a kiss between 2 characters found in his script because the kiss was too hard to draw. It was a 'gender swap' of Sleeping Beauty, which 40 years ago would have not been an easy reference for the artist to find!

This story sounds pretty cool and I didn't know lust was fine with a Kryptonian version of Alabama or not, so many different versions of Power girl also several questions with the near naked Lex Luthor and chain up Superman probably a little too happy?

I would think there would be tons of "cursed panels" from the silver age.

One of my favourite comic books ( also one of Carlos Pacheco's finest works together with AVENGERS FOREVER ) that I re - read at least once a year together with the excellent JSA - THY KINGDOM COME story. And for those who think Power Girl licking Superman's face ( who was not related to Power Girl and possibly from a different universe at that time ) is pervy he did worse things with Supergirl during the Silver Age ( who really was his cousin at that time ). So Superman hooking up with his sexy cousins has been a thing for DC Comics writers for a very looooooong time.

The only sad thing about the cursed panel of Power Girl is you can cover it only once and almost complete the PG most known controversies so its funny and sad at the same time, thanks for the vídeo!

I mean I'd be down for it if it was Lex Luthor. He'd got the LL and is thus a valid romantic interest for Supes.

"Cursed?" you mean "Awesome!" Pacheco does indeed draw some lovely gals and guys, along with wonderful hands. A great looking one-shot! You didn't mention on page 51 where Doctor Midnite lifts up Black Canary from behind and Green Arrow gets a little jelly yelling, "Hey! Watch the hands!"

I read this back in the day. Random thought this made me think of: I remember when Alan Scott was 'youthified' and called Sentinel with a different logo, and separated from the other Green Lanterns a bit. I thought that was kind of cool, he was a mystical 'Green Lantern' and they kind of streamlined his outfit, made it sleeker and more modern and gave him a star symbol... He kinda kicked ass with that look and powerset. Didn't last though!

This is one of my favorite JSA stories! For having a ton of characters, they do a decent job balancing them, making sure everyone has a minute in the spotlight. Haven't read it in a while though. I think I'm due for a re-reading

I'd like to think they possibly did have discussions about possible alternatives (she probably was the first choice though) to Power Girl being Lust (like Martian Manhunter) but the negatives of having a Male Lust were probably just WAY to negative.

I remember picking this volume up. Enjoyable adventure from beginning to end. Thanks for reviewing it and bringing back the fun of it.

Sasha! In Superman #80, 1953, Superman meets Halk Kar, essentially proto Mon-El, who has amnesia and is believed to be Superman's elder brother. However his powers are weaker than Clark's, so Superman makes up for his shortcomings to save his pride, however this causes Halk to try to woo Lois! I think I'd be a fun comic to made a video about.

Okay, I'm glad it wasn't as bad as I initially assumed this story sounds very very interesting. I'd love to make an adaptation of this for Warner Brothers. I'm actually looking to pitch something to them if anyone has any tips for that (that would be greatly appreciated)😄

Sasha, I just want to say how much I appreciate your energy, your knowledge, your willingness to dive into the past and into the backgrounds of comic creation. I don't read comics really anymore, the occasional graphic novel at the library. I certainly don't buy them. But I did for decades. And being an artist, I love how you do give the artists credit and talk about their art. I just love your videos and I wanted to say keep on, keepin' on. I did happen to read this particular story and I love, LOVE Pacheco's art. He is a freakin' gift to illustration. HIs line weight, his use of different body language (and types), his spotting of blacks, is off the charts great. And his composition is so, so damn good too. He is the full comic illustrator package.

The "Spider-Man pulling webbing off a naked MJ" panel looks kinda wholesome since she seems to have consented to whatever they were doing beforehand.

I remember reading this when I was younger and I was so confused about what was going on. I was already being introduced to new characters from both teams but the lick sure took everything I thought I knew and threw it out the window.

I used to own this story, but had forgotten it almost completely. Watching this brought back so many thoughts from the time. I remember being put off by the choice of Power Girl for Lust. The only reason is because she was a "sexy" character, often drawn for...titillation in her career...but she is rarely portrayed as a sexual character. I felt like Goyer and Johns were really reaching for this one. Green Arrow seems a much more obvious choice for Lust. I mean, dude can't keep his arrows in his quiver. Power Girl has been angry about something or the other for most of her post-COIE existence, so she seems like a lock for Wrath. But whatever.

First I own a hardcover copy of Virtue & Vice , & now need to go back a rediscover/ read it…because I did not remember that panel when seeing it on the community page … Lust & PG was a good choice, IMO Diana as a member of the Trinity would have been better… although that panel would not be as eye opening, unless it was WW licking Billy / Captain Marvel knowing his true age , but they would have to get someone else for Gluttony 🤔Wally …We need a short on Godzilla being like Mike …Thanks for this, Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾

Never a waste of time to spend a little of it discussing comics with our illustrious host! That said, this could have been the shortest video ever (and still have explained everything) if it had begun and ended with two words: Geoff Johns.

Came for the entertaining take on a wild pane, stayed for the honest social commentary. I mean, I would have stayed ~anyway~ but I do really appreciate how Sasha can weave both humor and serious topics into her discussions. If we go by the notion that what the vices are praying on are insecurities (i.e. /perceived/ character flaws, rather than actual ones) then possessing Super-Girl may have to do more with her grappling with knowing that her presentation is provocative, and grappling internally whether she's really made her Power Girl persona for herself, or for the benefit of others. I'm admittedly still rather neophyte to specific character histories but from what I recall, she's more or less a marooned survivor from a parallel Earth that was wiped from existence right? At the very least she's a doppleganger of Super-Girl and I could imagine she may have deep down (possibly resolved by this point but still lurking in a box in the basement of her psyche) fears about what she's doing to be her own identity and whether she's defined herself by her, well, window. I would would say the fear isn't justified but that's what makes the influence of the vices on their victims especially perfidious. As "bend the rules" flexible as Plastic Man is (heehee) there really isn't a danger of him becoming a master criminal at this point, and yet Greed can dredge up those questions inside him about his identity. Honestly, I think this comic stands to be much deeper than just "Oh, the heroes are taken over and body swapped with some villains."

This is a great premise for a series. I love how in-depth your knowledge of the content is and how neutral and open your perspective. It's impressive. I can't do that.

As always with 7 deadly sins possession stories, Lust possessing a beautiful woman instead of an actual lustful person is just so lazy.

What I get a kick out of his how much people seem to misunderstand the seven deadly sins. Tends to break down something like this: Wrath - Revenge Lust - Naughty Sexi Gluttony - Obesity Envy - Wanting someone else's things. Sloth - Laziness Greed - Desire for money Pride - Narcissism This seems to be an attempt to diferentiate between them, when in many ways there are no real differences. When you look it up it's more like this. Wrath - Pretty much just anger, a desire to do harm. Lust - An insatiable desire for anything. Gluttony - Hoarding more than you need of anything you can think of. Envy - Anger at the good fortune of others. Sloth - Failure of duty - apathy: not just work ethic. Greed - A desire to hoard more than you need of anything you can think of. Pride - Said to be the source of the other sins, it's more a lack of humility than outright arrogance. You can see how these are less subtle distinctions, and more continuous overlap. It mostly boils down to, having to much is bad, wanting too much is bad, being angry is bad.

I actually picked that story up recently not knowing the curse was there! But im excited. Ive recently learned im a huge Power Girl fan.... initially it definatly was about her chest but now im just in love with her for her character and the whacky stuff she has gone through as a charater. but i have that issue.... *digs through stack of comics* somewhere... ill read it soon im sure

Fun story! I picked up the trade for this in San Diego back in 2004 when my wife and I went. Loved the choices for which hero would be possessed by which Vice. No question Power Girl was the right choice for embodying Lust, especially due to the good points you make, Sasha, about how any male hero being chosen would have been seen as a predator (20 years sure have changed things a lot). As a little kid, I picked up the first Power Girl appearances with my allowance, and even back then she was heavily into Women's Lib (which is what Feminism used to be called back in the 70s). She knew guys wanted her, but she never seemed to have a love interest. Mind you, her choices in the JSA were truly slim pickings. Andrew Vinson was her first actual boyfriend, and he was pretty much a male version of Lois Lane, but with far less chemistry.

I think that the 'Injustices' are also subject to their own natures, thus Hunger's unending appetite for power: It not only wants the power of Capt. Marvel, It wants the power of Black Adam as well (even though that power was used to SUBVERT him) and the power of the Wizard as well (MARVEL). If this is the case then Power Girl was chosen by Lust because she has the hottest body on both teams.

Remember, Superman has super senses. So he constantly is trying to ignore the smell of human farts from the entire world. And of course, at all times, he can smell the dumps people are taking as they drop them. But he's polite enough to pretend not to notice.

I was always confused when there were Eight Deadly Evils of Man instead of the Seven obviously based off the seven deadly sins. I wonder why they once included "Injustice" as an evil, and why they removed it and went with the seven sins without any nuance.

Power Window is the ultimate lust.

Interesting comic given now a day that the JSA and JLA never interact that often. Also it would be nice to cover the two issue where Dick Greyson discover his Romani heritage and see your interpretation on the matter.

I remember an advertisement for this comic in a wizard magazine at that the time this comic was out in the newsstand, or bookstore💁🏻‍♂.

I'm kind of curious about the logistics of Doctor Fate getting possessed. Like there's already a possessive spirit at play there. three's a crowd. Is that ever addressed? What does the Helm think of this, or is the helm the one that got possessed?

Power Girl licking Superman and becoming the embodiment for Lust had to be a Goyer idea. Remember what he said about She-Hulk years ago? He must [ahem] enjoy family reunions.

That Power Girl panel is so cursed, it's gonna lead to the first Marvel/DC crossover in years where Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange have to contain it.

I actually own the hardcover of this book. If I remember correctly at the time there was this general undercurrent in DC stories that she was featured in that Power Girl was basically considered the hottest female on Earth and everybody wanted to bang her. It was also around this time where portrayals of her boobs went from "large-breasted" to "pornstar size". So yeah, her being "Lust" in this context does make sense, even if said context is kinda skeevy in hindsight. Also, I'm pretty sure they hadn't sorted out her "alternate universe Kryptonian" origins yet and she was still largely believed to be Atlantean, so her putting the moves on Supes didn't feel as pervy at the time. I guess it's kind of a Luke and Leia situation.

One of my favorite JSA/JLA stories. I was totally blown away when it came out.

One of my earliest comics was a Shazam! special based on the 7 Sins getting loose and wreaking havoc. It was one of my favorites. I haven't seen this but it looks worth reading. I love seeing them as the statues. Why can't DC manage to make good movies when they have material this rich? I'm also loving your look today, especially that hair!
