I just found out while watching this video that I made it into an orchestra I auditioned for. I am genuinely surprised because while I was recording my piece, I stopped in the middle so many times and I got so frustrated that I didnt care about mistakes I just wanted to get it over with so I just turned a video in with a ton of mistakes. This is my first time being in an actual orchestra.

I was scrolling through something one day and found an image of someone “playing the violin.” She had the violin on the left shoulder but held it with her right hand. The pinky on the bow was straight, and she was using the bow with the left hand. There was no chin rest, and judging from her technique, she should be using 4 fine tuners. As a violinist myself, it hurts.

1:20 Funny story...my junior year of high school, I was preparing a piece (I can't remember what it was now) for regional/all-state violin auditions. The last page was notoriously difficult, so my violin teacher told me not to bother practicing it, since I most likely wouldn't be asked to play it at the audition. Relieved, I practiced the rest of the piece and only sort of practiced the difficult part. Day of the audition, the adjudicators ask me to play the beginning...and then they asked me to play the extremely hard passage. My heart dropped through the floor. I told them my teacher had told me not to practice it, but I got zero sympathy (understandably). I ploughed my way through the passage and got a terrible score. Moral of the story: learn the hard part anyway, because if you don't, they'll definitely ask you to play it at the audition. XD

Back when I was in high school we had music classes for strings but they were so amateur and wouldn’t teach you much. So after a beginner class (not so much for me, I learned a bit of violin when I was little but stopped after less than a year) most of our class advanced to the senior class. I stayed in the first violin section, only one of my “beginner class” to do so but because the senior class had two experienced, performance level players I was the third in the section and usually just follow the other two. Then one performance both of the other two for some mysterious reason stopped in the middle of a melody that featured us. I would normally stop too because, again, I only follow them, but I held on enough for the other two to find their footing and rejoin. The pride I felt at that moment was immeasurable.

17 years later... I will always remember my grade 7 AMEB piano exam... I chose a grade 8 piece to play as my extra list because I loved the opening. It's like 10 pages long so there was no way I was ever going to practise past the first few pages. You can guess what happened... The examiner never stopped me and let me mash my way through the rest of Golliwog's Cake Walk because she was busy writing comments... So many pages of sightreading. Bloody traumatic 😅😂😭
