I agree with your perspective here. People have had wars, violence, conquest in all cultures and religions for all of history and prehistory. As practitioners of witchcraft we have to recognize that there are inherently baneful tendencies within all of us and factor that into our perception as we continue to practice.
As I got more and more into practicing I was starting to just realize my strength. To the point I was noticing how much of an affect I had on people's lives day to day. I was starting to have a lot of fun watching this playout in front of me until I knew I was letting these tendencies take over. Those of you that are really able to channel your energies as well as me need to be careful of our deep human nature which is to conquest
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve also heard, “Use only positive language,” but I add “with harm to none” (I’m not Wiccan) or, for example, with a money spell I add “not by inheritance” or “no one is to die.” Another way always comes up.
I reckon it is: as long as a person has done something bad enough to you; they expect to get away with it (like a lot of villains and advantage-takers do 😏) and you definitely know it is them!! 😏😏 THEN it is your right, nay your duty as a witch, to take magical revenge. (Ditto on behalf of family members.) There are some quite nice recipes in hoodoo magic for this... I also read once of a rather interesting spell on the old site of a guy called Stephen Wagner, in which a young witch prayed to Sekhmet the Egyptian lion goddess (against a school bully) and used an object in her working that the bully had had skin contact with (ie, her school pencil). Guess what? The bully soon got bullied back, by a much fiercer bully!! 😄😄 There is also support for revenge through rune magic (galdr?) in the Norse sagas.
Such a brilliant video, definitely the kind of nuanced content we need more of on RU-vid - not just regurgitating the same old superstitions (ahem, threefold law), actually thinking about things.
My sister is dealing with this guy that always bothers her , and she has tried everything without being violent (Which for me is surprising because she seriously hates this guy with a *BURNING* Passion.) and she's at the point to where she's about to Hex him as a last resort. So I'm researching baneful magick to help her out. And also this guy does not seem to understand boundaries and she literally told him not to long ago to F off. He's still bothering her , so at this point I'm going to help her hex him Safely. I hope she doesn't end up just Hexing him on impulse without learning first. She's a little impulsive. I agree with a lot of your perspective and found your comment about ethics in witchcraft lining up with ethics in the mundane made a connection for me that I hadn't thought about before. This also reminded me of Kate Freuler's writing on the topic in "Of Blood and Bones", which I found to be insightful when I read it. The one thing I would caution is the example of a death curse for someone who is in pain. Currently, there are places in the world where medically assisted death is more readily available than medical treatment, housing, and mental health services. This is a very nuanced topic, of course, but the first thing lost online is nuance. I just wanted to make sure the comment was made because there are plenty of people who honestly believe that death is better than disability while also arguing against aid for disabled people.
Ooooh I also don’t think someone should ever put a death curse on someone who’s sick just because they think that death would be better for that person. My example was only meant as… when the person who’s sick wants to die. Of course this is still very controversial, as is medically assisted death… but yeah just wanted to make sure this was clear ☺️

There is never going to be a one-size-fits-all for these sorts of things, just like how magical practices will all be different depending on the individual needs of the person practicing. It's like what you were saying in the video; make sure you know enough about the situation before casting.
I usually reserve the baneful working as a last resort and then in most cases it is for protection against someone who plans to do harm to my family or my property.
Personally, I refrain from using curses, hexes, ect., except as a last resort. Like Bente said, use mundane methods to solve your problem before using magic. I don't know know about the Threefold Law, but I do believe in karma, and I do believe that if you try to curse someone, you invite bad energy into your life. But that's just me...
I believe that the freedom of individual choice is so important. When you affect others, you are accountable in some way, regardless of your intentions. I think that where we sometimes miss in current society is that things are often remote or virtual, seeming somehow not quite real life. Ultimately, some people are cognizant of where they fit in the world and some are not. All I can hope is that most people, myself included, make the right choices for ourselves and those around us. I typically don't take chances. I have an annointed propane crucible that I used to cast infuded runic ingots, but I also use it to dispose of banful and other harmful spells by melting down the jar with the spell inside (open the jar first) and then disposing of the slag in a deep hole I've dug with a posthole digger.

Usually people just get upset because they don’t like to be told that where they put their money has an impact positive and negative.

I tend to follow 3 principles on this subject: I. Don’t do a spell upon another person/group without their consent, unless for protection. II. Get specific; especially specifying the result should only negatively/positively impact the specified target person/group. III. Add to Curses/Baneful spells “fine print”; adding that the spell only negatively/positively impacts the target in relation to the harm/good they do/actually-intend to do to another specified group/person
I agree... My belief is you are allowed to defend yourself and you're allowed to send that energy back. I'm sure must of us have said: "I'm rubber, you're glue Whatever you say, bounces off of me and sticks to you" = return to sender chant I say, do no harm but take no 💩

Thank you for this video! I'm with you, life is not good or evil and so little is the magic. It already fails in the definition. 🤣 in my video a few years ago on black and white magic (I hate the term) I also brought the job example. I also think it's ok to do baneful workings, but be thoughtful about it.
I agree. You cannot evaluate anything without context. I personally believe that everything we do, whether it's mundane or magical, leaves an imprint in the universe energetically, but we cannot possibly foresee every single effect that action will have. The cascade or chain reaction of effects and events to follow is beyond our scope. So in that regard, I think a background check would be too "superficial" and futile as a kind of a damage control policy. The ripple effect goes far beyond that and can make some weird twists and turns we cannot even imagine. I think this whole topic is so complex!! It's like philosophy and quantum physics combined!😅 In my own practice I also prefer mundane before magical and love&light before baneful. But if that doesn't work and it's about self-defense and protection for instance, sometimes you just don't have a choice. For me, baneful is a last resort. Maybe with a toxic co-worker I would first try a happy-spell or something :-)) because usually when people behave badly it's because they're miserable🙈🙉
I think society sets out our moral codes for us, that's what I try to follow. But I agree defining spells as bad or good is so difficult because to me a love spell is baneful a nd I agree with helping someone who is suffering to pass is not baneful! Life is more grey than we as humans wish it were
Great video! If you haven't already would you consider doing a video on how you interpret UPG? Like oftentimes with UPG I think the difficulty can come from determining what spirit/gods/beings are trying to communicate and how that gets filtered through our minds if that makes sense.
I would say that baneful working could be defined as a spell cast upon someone with their worst interests at heart. The person who the spell is focused on is unwilling and doesn’t want the spell, meanwhile light magic would be cast in someone’s best interests.
I think everyone sleeps in a bed of roses. Karma decides if you get the petals or thorns. Some people are masochists and like thorns, and others prefer not to get pricked. I say do you boo.

I think love spells are most problematic: if I fell in love with someone's authentic self, then used a spell to alter their feelings, then are they really still authentic and the same person I fell in love with?
The "three fold" rule feels to me like the pegan version of a christian saying there's no morality without believing in god. My dad (a preacher) says things like well, what stops you from murdering or stealing? It has to be that there's a god who wrote his word on your heart or the fear of some kind of judgement from above. I mean, it's not that I don't think there's cosmic order or exchanges of energy for energy given or taken. It's that there's nuance. I think there's times when we should let things play out and others when we see an injustice and should be the the ones who direct carma. But also understanding that freewill is important, that there's social consequences and that if we stay too long in the negative our own energy will match and draw in more negativity. I think a reason a lot of people get away with terrible things is because often times they're not aware of harm they're creating, genuinely don't care or feel justified. That makes them immune in a way because they're walking around blind. That's something that can be both bliss and torture for many reasons. And something that we as Magick practitioners can also fall into. Specially if we aren't checking in with ourselves or don't "know thy self". Sorry if that was a ramble
I believe misusing a harmful spell is more likely to cause it to backfire. Or at least have a karma response. Or you could be angering something and that something will show its anger. So its best to only do it when it is absolutely necessary.
My definition of Baneful is you cast a spell to intentionally harm someone. If you cast a non-baneful spell and it triggers a chain of events that harms other people unintentionally, that's just life. Our existance harms other people and forms of life wether we like to acknowledge it or not.
Here's a topic I would love to see even follow as a serie: Everything about Norse gods and how vikings and Norse people used to practice it as a religion, their customs in offerings and sacrifices etc.

Personally I have no idea how to even bring death upon someone without magick, let alone how to pull off a death spell. I’m really really sorry I couldn’t be more help, but I will wish you well.

Even in mundane life, unless my family or I am under threat, I don't want to hurt people. So, I've avoided baneful work. I feel like you're right about the work being a blessing or a curse, depending on the situation. I think if someone sends an actual curse towards me I’m fine with it being thrown back at them. The only problem I see is that a lot of the time it’s not intentional but more of an evil eye situation and I wouldn’t want to send that back to them, because yeah it’s usually unintentional, they aren’t even aware of it. I think that would be a very tricky ward to put up 😅
But yes I definitely think you can set up a ward that notifies you whenever something was „caught“ or warded off. You just have to find a sign for it that you can’t overlook

Yeah, that's the other thing I think about. I know even thinking bad things can send out bad jubies. I'm not trying to hurt someone for something they unintentionally did.
I want to ask you.. Is it too far to hex someone with the intent for them to find lost things they want to, but in doing so trip and stub their toe? Only because of being cruel to others related to such things (and others, but I'm trying to be merciful). It's just a total return of energy. This person really hurt me, went to extraordinarily cruel lengths to strike at my core as a trans woman. About my awkwardness. About my social anxiety. Even about my touchy-feely thing with people I care about. I'm a platonic cuddler. And this trans guy went on a transphobic rant that also included that as another slap in the face.... All because I was drawing a line during a clean-up job I was helping with. And it wasn't just me he was awful to. He's been awful to his partner as well... A very vulnerable woman who has epilepsy and can barely leave. This man needs to be taught a lesson. He needs to be humbled.

You get something but lose something else, that is the way to maintain balance. If you do a whatever spell that works for you, a spell job for example, as you said ,you get the job, someone else doesn't. But the point in this life is that you fight for yourself. Actually you care about yourself, for your own good. You don't think" aaaa I will do this spell and I will get the job but maybe I shouldn't do it bc someone else doesn't amd this is bad" .NO NO. You always do spells for your own good. If someone do spells for evil reasons, this is far away from our practice and this is bad indeed 😔
