Nobody said it then, but it saved the US's butt when they had no modern fighter available. It's been compared to the Japanese Zero incorrectly. It fought the very similar performing Oscar (similar speed and look to the Zero) because both planes were land based. The P-40N took control of the Mediterranean area when the Germans cut and ran from Africa. The N was just as fast as the 109 and was much lighter than the early models. The veteran pilots learn to maximize it's capability to shoot down everything that came up in the Med after 1943.

I have thoroughly researched air combat in the Pacific since the '70's. It is true that early on the pilots flew against the Oscars and Zeros with a definite inferiority complex. Thanks to the experiences and encouragement of the AVG and Claire Chennault, P-40 pilots learned valuable lessons!

I approve of this video. I looked after a former pilot of this aircraft. He was from the “desert harassers” a RAF squadron that served in north Africa and Italy. He completed 180 sorties without being shot down. His name was Charles booth.

The P-40 had a better dive speed, faster roll rate and tighter turning ability than a P-51. In the hands of the right pilot, this airplane was lethal.

There were a number of P-40 pilots who were double aces. This plane is underrated. This plane held the line against Imperial Japan.

Emelio, you need to study the P-40 before you trash-talk it! Comparing what you know about the P-40 to what is known is like comparing a mouse to a Velociraptor!

Furthermore, it was more resistant than the P-51, which, as I read somewhere, was vulnerable even to rifle bullets (????) Some P-40 pilots had their planes turned into flying strainers and still they flew back home, as I read in some WWII chronicles. I doubt that a P-51 could make it in such conditions... Were I a WWII fighter pilot, I´d entrust my life to a P-40 rather than to a P-51, in spite of the P-40 limitations as an interceptor.
@chaosbreaker657
@chaosbreaker657 6 лет назад
True. The P-51 was vulnerable to ground fire, which became apparent in the Korean War, where P-51s (or F-51s) were used for close air support. A lot became casualties in that war. Not saying that the P-51 sucks, it's just that it's not fit to do close air support, as it simply can't take too much punishment. Maybe the P-47 or even the P-40 could be more suitable, as their frames are sturdier than the Mustang's.

I must say that I am rather done with P-40s repainted in Chinese or US markings, and with the same shark mouth painted on so many models. I with they repainted a P-40E in the colors of Clive "killer" Caldwell´s DAF Kittyhawk "GA-Y", or Neville Duke´s "GA-V". A 112nd RAF squ. desert scheme would be an amazing sight, I think. After all, the P-40 was successful not only over China...

112 squadron ie the Shark Squadron were the first to paint the sharks mouth.My father flew with 112 in the western desert and on through Italy and beyond.Went on to p50s after the Kittyhawks.

As a historian, seeing a P40E dressed up like AVG is fucking cringe. The AVG used Tomahawk II's, which was an export variant of the P40B. The Chinese DID have two dozen P40E's but they weren't dressed up like AVG with the shark mouths.

I wonder how the P-40 would have performed with a Merlin engine.
@HistAvFilmUnit

The P-40F had a Merlin engine. Obviously it can't have been that great as it was the only model so equipped.
@slick4401
@slick4401 6 лет назад
Thanks for pointing this out. It looks like those models were assigned earlier versions of the Packard-Merlin engines, which were used by Spitfire Vs and Hurricane IIs, by no means as good as the ones fitted to the P-51 and later Spitfire models.

Down below 15K feet the Allison performed just fine. It is where the vast majority of combat in the MTO and CBI theaters occured along with the Eastern front.

The P-40 and the Merlin were great together. The P-51 had priority, so it got the "lion's share" of the Merlins.

The Merlin in the F had only a single-speed, single-stage supercharger instead of the two-speed, two-stage one that was in the Mustang.

An unwanted plane in surplus. Given to the Chinese Airforce before we entered the war. But, they distinguished themselves when flown by outstanding pilots who were Flying Tigers before the US entered ww2.

If you have control over the ad content, I would urge you to reconsider the Scientology contract. The unscrupulous swine have gone as far as to use the image of suffering combat veterans to carry their lies.
