Worked on the curve with Tevin last Thursday, we sprinted over hurdles 6, 7, and 8, working the angles of the curve and developing confidence in using the leg that comes up.
I really need to work more on the turn with my kids. I was happy to see that Tevin led with his left a number of times. Do you have any advice for helping kids decide at about 10 yards before the hurdle which lead leg to use? I've always believed in teaching kids to lead with either leg (just in case). I feel like being able to make an early determination will prevent chopping steps. Any advice is welcome.
What I always remind them is to keep the hands high, no matter what. As hurdlers approach the hurdle and are unsure which leg to use, they tend to lower the hands, which leads to choppy strides and a huge loss of momentum. If they can keep the hands high and keep running, they can get over the hurdle when they get there. And yes, I’m also big on being able to alternate, because you want to have as much optionality as possible.
