Custer Of The West - George Armstrong Custer's love of the heroic traditions of the Calvary and his distaste with the coming of industrialization leads him to his destiny at the Little Big Horn.
Custer of the West (1967)
Director: Robert Siodmak
Writers: Bernard Gordon, Julian Zimet
Stars: Robert Shaw, Mary Ure, Ty Hardin
Genre: Western, Biography, Drama, History
Runtime: 2h 15min
Country: UK | France | Spain | USA
Language: English
Filming Locations: Colmenar Viejo, Madrid, Spain
Also Known As: Last Post - US Kavallerie Western-Klassiker Box,
Storyline:
The story of U.S. Army commander George Armstrong Custer, a flamboyant hero of the Civil War who later fought and was exterminated with his entire command by warring Sioux and Cheyenne tribes at the battle of Little Big Horn in 1876.
Reviews:
This is actually a sad movie. I will not mention the end for fear of including a "spoiler", but also I cannot imagine that most American viewers would not already know how it ends.
Though I live overseas now I grew up in the United States in the 1960s (in fact, I still retain my U.S. citizenship). Some of the lines in this 1967 movie are, in fact, anachronisms (they were not in the language in the 1860s or 1870s when this movie was set). The phrase that one U.S. soldier was worth (in combat) 10 Indians was a takeoff on the phrase used at that time in the Vietnam War concerning the kill ratio. Also, the term that General Sheridan used, "Bleeding hearts" comes from the 1960s; not the 1860s. The director of this movie was obviously comparing the moral problems we felt with Vietnam with the same problems the U.S. felt during the Indian Wars a century before. I did not know, of course, any Indian War veterans, but I did know two good men who went to Vietnam and did not come back alive.
Also tearful is the real life love you detect between George and Libby Custer that is portrayed by the real life married couple of Robert Shaw and Mary Ure. Six children between them. She died about ten years later from an accidental overdose of alcohol mixed with sleeping pills. He was so heartbroken that he died a few years later literally of a broken heart.
It is still a magnificent film. The western scenes are indigenous to that part of the United States that it is actually a shock to find out they were filmed not in South Dakota, California, Nevada, Kansas,etc. but rather in Spain!! written by enthusiast

Robert Shaw had 9 children to feed. Shaw never became really wealthy as an actor. He and his large family moved to Ireland and lived a rather modest lifestyle. Shaw picked many off beat acting roles just to make ends meet. Robert Shaw would never attain the fame of Burton, Caine or Connery but he was their equal as an actor. “JAWS” proved that! Of all the great English actors…I miss him the most.

Great old movie! Excellent English vocabulary. Wonderful soundtrack. That's not a history handbook but a great theatrical vision about the great men era. Politically neutral shows also the moving tragedy of helpless but noble compassion for the bitter fate of native Americans, being civilised in an extremely hard way. The Custer's last days depicted briefly but incredibly impressive. All that makes this film a movie art masterpiece.

No, there was never an actual arrangement to meet up with anyone. The idea was that the three swords, Custer being one were each strong enough to take on whatever they ran into on their own. Or so it was thought. There were no canons. As for the gatlin guns, Reno had just come back from his scout and found that they were nothing but extra baggage that weren't worth the trouble Custer had about as many missions during the Civil War and lost none of them. He was considered one of the best cavalry officers Grant had. Sheridan bought the table that the surrender was signed on and gave it to Custer telling him no one did more to bring about the victory. They, who were they? They crow agency? Talk about tall tales. The number of indians kept growing from 1876 to Reno's court of Inquiry to justify that Reno couldn't have done anything. The original numbers were closer to 1500 to 2000 before it was convenient that Custer take the fall for Little Big Horn all by himself. The battle was more like two hours. Had Reno and Benteen got off their rears Custer would have been the next president. Oh, I know it has been fashionable ever since the 60's that Custer must pay for all the ills of the white man. The truth about Custer would have come out much sooner we’re it not for his wife, Libby. She devoted the rest of her life to perpetuating the heroic (and greatly embellished) narrative of her husband. Men who served with him and one officer who was there at Little Big Horn made an effort to correct the record. However, as Libby developed a public speaking tour, and wrote a book about being George’s wife that ladies of the time loved, the gentlemen grew quiet and let it be, I believe. It is the perspective I got from my research anyway.

After viewing the British movie, Tracker, I never thought the British could ever make a sub-par, movie, yet, this one, I am genuinely sorry to say, is exactly that. And gosh, not a cheap movie to make either. I mean, this has to have been a scorching bill to direct and produce, with all the horses, Indians, and outdoor scenery? Okay, back to helping the British again, to just say; That movie, Tracker, is definitely the most pleasing surprise I have seen at movie- watching, for many years. It's simply outstanding in every detail; and was another very expensive movie to undertake, especially in mountainous New Zealand, wow. Oh, the scenery is breathtaking, with all the fast-running streams and creeks looking so crispy clean, and clear. Again, this Custer movie is not as professionally made as is, Tracker. Big difference and especially with top-notch acting, which may be the most attractive feature of this surprising, classy style of a movie.

47:41 the film is problematic historically but close inspection of some scenes does point out nuggets of accuracy. Here, Custer has two pictures of his favourite generals up in his study. This is true as the real Custer was photographed with these pictutes. Both were two prima donnas - George McClellan & George Custer himself.
@johnjohnon8767
@johnjohnon8767 9 месяцев назад
Where do I begin, there are a number of truths in this. Corruption, greed, and the nature of man, not just one group,as a whole. Taking from someone else. Then you have the inaccuracies and the facts no one knows for sure. Not a bad movie. Events in the past cant be erased no matter the desire not to know, or omitting on purpose.
