Edward Settle Godfrey’s military career spanned 44 tumultuous years.
Not only did he find himself serving briefly in the Civil War, Godfrey participated in some the most controversial Indian War fights (the Battle of the Washita against the Southern Cheyenne under Chief Black Kettle, the Little Bighorn fight/ Custer's Last Stand against Lakota and Cheyenne under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, the Bear Paw Fight against the Nez Perce under Chief Joseph, and the Wounded Knee Massacre of Lakota Ghost Dance members).
Godfrey also served in Cuba and the Philippines.
He would go on to write extensively about the Battle of Little Bighorn, attending the 10th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries held on the battlefield.
He lived a long life, but he also suffered great personal tragedy...

THANK YOU to the folks at the US Military Institute, Carlisle, PA!
Most of the photos used in this video are from the Edward S. Godfrey Collection there.

When you read the literature, Godfrey consistency was able to make sound decisions and stick to protocols during stressful situations like the Washita (as you mentioned) and the movement from Weir Point back to Reno Hill. His use of proper rear guard tactics saved the lives of his men on several occasions. I am glad you touched on the Wounded Knee situation when his men fired on children in the brush. That is definitely a blemish on his otherwise magnificent military career.

Thank you. It's incredible that he managed to be in the thick of the Indian Wars for over two decades, and that was only half of his career. His stare makes me think he has seen things he wishes he could forget. Thanks so much for yet another insightfu comment, Russell. I really enjoy reading your comments. All best, Siobhan

Would love your view of Godfrey and his idea of the approach to the LBH. He agrees or better said, Goldin agrees with Godfrey while both other messengers, Martin and Knipe say that the companies stayed together and also were overlooking the valley and Reno. I never understood how he seemed the most honest of the RCOI officers and came about his approach by Custer to the battlefield. Not totally honest but closer than most. Then he includes the map from the LBH made by another Sgt. of Engineers under Maguire (not Sgt. Charles Becker) in his Century Magazine story which does not reflect LSH as the battlefield. But does mirror the map used at the RCOI. just seems interesting. The idea that he says he was sent or went off to the East to look for men is also something that needs to be researched more as Godfrey had a compass of 360 degrees and he says he went pretty far looking for possible holdouts or troopers. But why East and why farther than the majority of bodies found. Unless it was the pursuit of the few that got away such as Fingle or others.

The LBH failed because of the treachery of Reno/ Benteen with the backing of Grant. Wounded Knee turned bloody because the Army surrounded the band of Indians, who left the reservation to follow the warrior way of raiding, and proceeded to try arrest people who thought they were bulletproof.
