Edward Settle Godfrey’s military career spanned 44 tumultuous years.
Not only did he find himself serving briefly in the Civil War, Godfrey participated in some the most controversial Indian War fights (the Battle of the Washita against the Southern Cheyenne under Chief Black Kettle, the Little Bighorn fight/ Custer's Last Stand against Lakota and Cheyenne under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, the Bear Paw Fight against the Nez Perce under Chief Joseph, and the Wounded Knee Massacre of Lakota Ghost Dance members).
Godfrey also served in Cuba and the Philippines.
He would go on to write extensively about the Battle of Little Bighorn, attending the 10th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries held on the battlefield.
He lived a long life, but he also suffered great personal tragedy...
