Custer's Love Letters & the Secret Mission to Retrieve Them

On June 11, 1864, at the battle of Trevilian Station, what started as a big win for George Armstrong Custer and his Michigan Brigade, became the biggest and deadliest all-cavalry fight of the Civil War.
One casualty was the Headquarter's wagon, captured by the Confederates, which contained Custer's personal items and the private letters from his wife, Libbie.
These love letters would be printed in Richmond newspapers and read in Southern drawing rooms.
One brave young Union officer would attempt a night-time “raid” to reclaim them…
...
General Blackmar's letter to Libbie Custer can be found in YANKEE magazine, 1969 issue (but it's also online at: www.lindapages.com/wvcw/1wvc/1... ).
Most of the illustrations came from The James E. Taylor Sketchbook: With Sheridan Up the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Others were supplied by friends or found on open source web sites.
Photo credits to Joe Kelly (photo of letters) and Jeffrey Allen Smith (color image of the Michigan Brigade)-- thank you!
This video plays tribute to Little Bighorn author, historian, and generous friend, Bruce Liddic, who remains an inspiration, and helped ignite my passion for Little Bighorn and Seventh Cavalry studies.

Absolutely delightful! My husband and I have been "Libbie and Custer" since 1976! His long blonde hair and fringed leather jacket earned his being called Colonel Custer by construction workers as he walked to college in Albany, NY.

Lt Wilmon Blackmar was the recipient of a Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Five Forks, April 1, 1865. He donated the chair that Gen Grant used in drafting the surrender terms of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in Wilmer McClean's home at Appomattox Court House to the Smithsonian Institution. Blackmar was given the chair by his brigade commander, Henry Capehart, who had originally procured it. More widely known is that the small pine table Grant used was purchased by Gen Phil Sheridan and given to Custer as a gift for Libbie.

I knew about the table, but I did not know that there is even a story behind Grant's chair! Ha!! Thank you for that. Such great info.

@@SiobhanFallon7 Sheridan reportedly got the inkstand (another source states his brother Mike got it). Besides Capehart, at least one other guy in Custer's 3rd Cav Div got a souvenir: Edward Whittaker, Custer's Acting Assistant Inspector General got the chair that Lee used. It's also at the Smithsonian. I think Alexander Pennington, another of Custer's brigade commanders, got a candlestick or two, but I haven't found the source yet. General Edward Ord, commander of the Army of the James, got the marble-topped table that Lee used and it's now at the Chicago Historical Society.

Another really interesting story Siobhan. It goes against the view that the Victorians were mostly reserved and prudish. Libby was obviously in no way ashamed to display her desire and love for her husband, George Custer.

Yes, I agree!! Interesting how this also foreshadows her later writing career. That she would write volumes others would find worth reading. ✍️ 📚💕

This is well done. Thank you. According to historian Eric Wittenberg (and I agree with him) stratigically Trevilian Station is a Confederate win for Wade Hampton. He has done quite a bit of reaearch on this particular battle. I don't agree with Wittenberg on all of his opinions (he's no Custer fan) but Sheridan really bungled this battle.

And Custer's wagon being captured at Trevilian Station resulted in our being able to see the most beautifully preserved uniform and accoutrements of the Civil War.

Fascinating! And it’s true. More evidence the love between Libbie and George was one of the greatest historical romances. And excellent diplomatic and quick thinking skills by the Provost Marshal.

Emma married and had 2 sons. She died in NJ in 1902 and is buried in CT. Nellie remained single and died in 1949 in Chicago, where she is buried. They were actually cousins, not sisters.
