Next up, Custer State Park!! This is a gigantic State Park that rivals most National Parks and we are excited to start exploring. Custer State Park camping options are abundant but on this busy holiday weekend, we grab the last same-day-reservation only spot at Center Lake Campground and quickly get the Airstream set up for dry camping. Custer State Park is a dream for camping with dogs - plenty of room to run amok and chase chipmunks, and all the trails are dog-friendly - State Park bonus!! We enjoy Wildlife Loop Road and Needles Scenic drive and our fitness is tested on the Cathedral Spires Trail. South Dakota is proving to be pretty epic!!

The wife and I went through the wild life loop 3 times shortly after you published this video. The first two times had fog, then thunderstorms. Not until the third time thru were we able to see the Bison, and your herd was at least 3 times the size of the one we passed through. We drove through both Needles Hwy and Iron Mountain road in my F-350 dually. Had to pull the mirrors in on the second. However, we followed a full size tour bus thru Needles which I would have bet $100.00 he couldn't make....low and behold he did. WOW, did look close at his mirrors and they were scraped up pretty good. Be that as it may, great video, and because of it I decided to subscribe. Keep up the good work and be safe, have fun, & happy camping. v/r, TS Denver, CO

I hope you ended up being able to check out Sylvan Lake. It's our fav in the park. Kids play in the water and catch minnows, etc. Can hike around the lake. It's just gorgeous. Thanks for adding Month/Year to your vids!

We sure did and it is definitely not to be missed, it rightly earned its title as the gem of Custer SP. We didn't get much footage there, unfortunately, so I'm not sure if it'll be featured in our upcoming video or not. You're welcome for adding the month/year, thank you for the idea!!

I was in Custer for the first time 2 years ago. A friend in Laramie suggested I check it out. Got into a donkey traffic jam, loved it, then the pronghorns, then the roads, then the buffalo, then the scenery, then the camping. I love that park and it is much bigger than most state parks. Was there again last year and hope to go back next year.

This place is awesome. Enjoyed video. Reason for honking in tunnels is to let those on other end know that you're coming. They can hear you if they can't see you. We got caught in buffalo traffic jam last week. It took us about an hour to go 2 or 3 miles. There is so much to see and do in the Hills. We absolutely love it there. Go sometime after it rains. Drive or walk and smell the pines. I could write a book, better quit. Thanks.
@EmbracingDetours
@EmbracingDetours 5 лет назад
Haha! I hear ya about writing a book about that place, it really is just that special! And thanks for the insight to the honking, we felt like we were getting yelled at 😳The buffalo rival any other place we've been, seeing the heard of over 1,000 all together was just breathtaking.

That is one chill travel cat. Wish mine were so relaxed during travel. My husband is from the black hills so we’ve been back a few times and always visit one part of Custer state park or another. Wonderful place!! One January, on our way through Wildlife Loop, a bison spent a few minutes licking the salt from the roads off of the side of our car. It was pretty cool!

He's always been a pretty laid-back cat, plus he's now 16+ yrs old, so he makes a perfect travel cat because he just goes with the flow. Your cat (in your avatar) is beautiful! Have you tried the pheromone collars for travel anxiety? What an amazing experience with the bison, lucky you! Thankfully he (or she) didn't see your car as an adversary... we've heard stories! Thank you for watching and commenting 👍😊

Hi, John & Marcia 👋The Buffalo Round-up sounds awesome- thanks for letting us know, we'll have to plan our return visit around seeing that! We also got caught in a Mountain Goat jam on Needles, that's actually going to be in our upcoming video where we visit Mt. Rushmore. I think that actually might have been more exciting for me than Mt. Rushmore, there were babies and they were SOOOOOOO CUTE!!!! Thank you so much for watching and commenting 👍😊

Those wild donkeys’ ancestors were toll takers back in the 60’s when our family visited Custer State Park. They would block the road and come up to your car windows expecting treats. Lots of fun. If we thought we could make it work, we would probably be traveling in a VW bus! When we were first researching RV's a salesman told us you're either an Airstream person or you're not, and I think the same can be said for VW's. Custer National Park never heard of it but good Lord it's a beautiful place. We head out west once a year last year we went all the way to Wyoming on your recommendation. Who knew it would snow in Wyoming kind of messed our trip up a bit and didn't get to see what we wanted . Wyoming is truly beautiful but Custer National Park that looks like the place to go. Y'all have so much fun please save some for the rest of us. Build a custom sand rail using a Volkswagen engine 1980 built it from scratch that's the way they title it custom Roadster. TJ you would haved loved to taken it for a spin.

Custer State Park was incredible! But be prepared for tumultuous weather, storms with hail are a regular occurrence (at least when we were there late June/early July). So sorry to hear of your bad luck in Wyoming, the weather can make such a difference between enjoying a place and not. We'll be sure to save some fun for you 😉 Oh my gosh, you are absolutely right, TJ would have loved to play with your custom-built sand rail!!! Have you heard of the Baja 1000? It's a giant off-road race held on the Baja California Peninsula every year, many different classes with vehicles ranging from ATVs, UTVs, stock VWs, buggies, trophy trucks, and custom fabricated vehicles. It looks awesome, we would love to see it in person one day!!

Right after Labor Day 2018 we flew to Rapid City, stayed in a hotel, and rented an SUV. We went to Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park. While at Custer I kept wishing we had a way to camp. We did the loop through the spires and tunnels. We stopped to get some pictures at a parking area right on a curve. The crowds weren't nearly what you experienced since we were there on a weekday in September. I kept hearing someone talking and there was a car in the parking area. I walked a little down the road and when I turned around to go back I saw someone had climbed to the top of one of the spires but I couldn't see anyone else so I assumed he was talking to someone on the ground. We started on down the road and when I looked in the rearview mirror I saw more people on top of other spires. Not sure if that was exactly within the rules or not. Thank you for another great video.

Enjoyed this video. We're avid RVers but have never been there. However, we are considering an investment opportunity in Custer, SD and enjoyed seeing the park. For campers, there are 9 campgrounds within the park with some capable of handling bigger RVs, not common for state parks. We have found that many state parks are as beautiful as National ones without the crowds.

This land was Paradise for the Native American. I can understand why. :) Once the land of Grizzly bear and Elk and Mountain lion,,watch out!!!

It was gorgeous, we can understand too. Surprisingly, none of the park literature mentioned bears, it felt like bear country to us!!

Yumm, that sounds delicious!! South Dakota is one of the states that surprised us the most, it was gorgeous and had an overwhelming number of things to see and do. We would go back in a heartbeat. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching and commenting.

Did they tell you how much elevation gain the hikes were? I took a hike this summer that was 873’ in 1.5 miles up and than you turn and come down. It was a fairly tough hike for me. So now I’m want to know if other parks tell you so I’ll know what I’m getting into.

I honestly can't remember if the park brochures go into that kind of detail for the trails. We use and like All Trails for that (you can either use their website or app on your phone)- it's free and gives you trail length, elevation, description of the trail, reviews from other hikers, etc. - Check it out! www.alltrails.com/trail/us/south-dakota/cathedral-spires-trail

How long was your hike?
@EmbracingDetours

I think the Cathedral Spires hikes was about 3 miles, but we have no mileage tracking device so we're just going off of what's advertised.

Hi Jeff, thank you for watching and commenting! When we hit the road we sold our house and all our belongings and built up a little nest egg. We're taking a mid-life hiatus and living off our savings at the moment. To be clear, we're not retired we're just not working at the moment. Hope that answers your question, thanks again for tuning in!

Why is roads sketchy in south dakota?
@EmbracingDetours
@EmbracingDetours 5 лет назад
Narrow, winding, steep mountain road with lots of wildlife to keep a lookout for, makes for towing a 30' long travel trailer a little sketchy! Certainly doable, just have to be much more alert than if you were driving a straight, flat, wide highway which is what we had been on for month prior to this video.
