Custom Built Hot Rod Headers For The 1932 Schroll Coupe’s Oldsmobile Rocket

When we pulled the 1932 Ford 5 window from the Schroll estate there was a Oldsmobile Rocket engine installed, but there was never headers installed. Matt has been looking through his vintage hot rod magazine collection to find some inspiration for a killer exhaust system. One of his favorite styles were the "lakes headers" with a full exhaust run out the back. One of the biggest advantages to that style is you can "uncork" it for racing and return it to a mild street exhaust. Most of the headers you can buy from most retailers have a very large megaphone end that looks out of place. Matt decided to build a full custom set with a much smaller diameter end. After spending two days building the custom headers, the Schroll 32 look has completely changed! Once the lift has opened up Matt will finish up the full exhaust out the back!!

Hey Matt. As always, great work. Every time you step thru a process that works on other types of projects as well as these. You show simple, creative approaches to complex constructs that are hard to figure out. These do-as-you-go methods flow very well when done. Congrats! You inspire people to attack complex fabrications in methodical a fashion.

Wow Matt, The first picture you showed floored me as it had a 1954 Lincoln Capri towing the 32! I had a 54 Capri exactly like it in 1964. That thing would cruise went across the high desert of Eastern WA put the needle on 95 and just flew... smooth as hell. Really enjoying the 32 build, as an old hot rodder from back in the day I recognize a lot of "the way we used to do its" lol

The headers are beautiful! If you leave the crappy paint it won’t matter, but if you paint the car, the headers may be too close to the cowl. They will get pretty hot. Great method of building them. Thanks!

Really a nice looking set of "lakes type" headers Matt! You sure don't see those much any more! They make the front of the rod look just right! And just for your readers since I know that you know, when finished those were called "lakes plugs or lakes pipes". Of course later on they called the ones that ran down the drag strips the same thing even though they never saw the "lakes". Looking great Matt!

Love your headers, they really look like what was out there in the 50s and 60s because I was there during those days, and of course, we bought Hotrod Magazines to show us all the crazy but good-looking mods that were being done at the time. I am always impressed with the work you do in bringing back to life this long gone, but still, alive time in history, when times were so much simpler than they are now, and in my opinion so much better. Mom's were at home Dad's worked and when they got home Supper was ready and we all gathered around the table and ate a good wholesome meal and the issues of the time were all settled by the time dessert was put on the table, No one watched TV or talked on the phone because being all together at the supper table was a must! Keep up the very enjoyable work you do.

Dang Matt, you make it look so easy building headers in your "Exhaust the Easy Way" Class 101..... haa ha! Another great show as usual. Thank you for taking time out of your day, your life, to show us all, how it's done and the way the rodders did it back in the day. Oh boy, I saw the car I love in the background. The '39 Ford Forgotten Hot Rod. I watched you build that one from the day you drug it out of the junkyard swamp. Are you going to be doing anything else with her? She is a beauty, and when you put the correct headlights on her, man that really pulled the front-end all together. Have a great day.

Headers are looking really good! On the drop pipe to rear, consider putting a scarf cutaway into the bottom of the cowl panel, so the pipe doesn't just "hang" below the bottom edge of the body, but "fits" into or through the scarf as if it was meant to be.... can send a sketch to clarify if needed....could be a nice detail. Really enjoying all your fabulous fab videos.....keep it up!

On the old factory headers like Hooker and Tubular Automotive the round tube is pushed into the flange, tacked on the outside to keep from moving then cut flush on the inside. The tube is then heated with a torch hammered to fit the square hole and welded. The weld is ground smooth but not flush that way it presses tight on the flange gasket.

Tubular , man... what a lot of fab it's gonna be...more to come...
@davelewis2174
@davelewis2174 3 года назад
You should heli braze (silicone bronze) the tubes to the flange on the out side , with small welds on the inside of the port . It stoped the header tubes from cracking near the flange. by reducing the heat affected zone

Someone may have already posted this. I was told '36 drive shafts used to be coveted because guys would cut them in half and use them as the dump tubes. Both ends of a '36 driveshaft have the same taper. They are a little on the skinny side, but you use what's at hand when you're making a hot rod.

I would have rather seen you treat the center port the way it was done by my former neighbor in W. L.A. Beginning with his '50 Olds Gasser he fabricated a piece that fit into the port and split the two cylinders. This piece was welded to the header flange therefore allowing two pipes to be used. A tapered square mandrel was made to be pounded into the heated tubing forming the correct fitment to the flange. You can see examples of this in pictures of the Adams and McEwen Dragster and the Stone, Woods and Cook A/GS Willys. Extra work, but with huge results. Be careful not to further restrict flow in center port. Not trying to be a troll... I just love those Rocket 88's.

Hey Matt, your headers are looking great, I like the material thickness you chose, the thinner material will sound tinny, I usually work by myself, so I'm always trying to figure ways to fixture stuff during the fabrication process, I save ALL of my drop pieces of steel, I totally agree you never know when you will need a small piece of material. As I mentioned in a previous comment, if you ever get back to Michigan, north of Detroit, let's do lunch, we will buy....we could swap stories...GOD BLESS!!!

Hey Matt The coupe is lookin great ! Getting that nasty old windshield out of the car made a great differance. The Headers look great, But you may be unhappy with them when they blister the paint on the cowl. My 27 T roadster has the same style headers on a 327 SBC 2 inches from the cowl and they still blistered the paint. Mine are open ended with baffles which I know contributed to the heat build up in the headers. Maybe with your tail pipe dropping the hot gasses away from the collector it will not heat them as bad as my baffles do. Heres hopping ! Be Safe and Well
@AndyGeesGarage
@AndyGeesGarage 3 года назад
These headers look great! I know exactly what you’re saying when it comes to modern manufactured headers. They just don’t have that custom built look. My T bucket project started because of an early style roadster header for a small block Chevy I found fo $100,. What makes them special is the sweep of the bends coming out of the cylinder heads is a much larger radius than the modern roadster headers commonly found on T buckets. Mine look like the headers on the Milner coupe. They also have a large diameter and very long collector with a cutout to the inside for under car exhaust.
