It seems like a great idea, build custom carbon fiber legs, for our sailboat! Also, carbon fiberglass dodger arch, mainsheet arch traveler combo contraption.
Stick with me while I catch you up to speed on Eva, it's been a LOT of epoxy :-)
Sit back enjoy and subscribe!
Thanks all

As a person who’s done way more than his share of “solo” boat projects over the last 45 years, it’s refreshing and inspirational to see BOTH of you thinking, discussing, suggesting and working toward a wonderful solution for your new creation. Just remember the tremendous loads put on those structures by winds and sails…and reinforce the heck out of them. Love the series!

Lesson learned by this captain is that not all force on the Bimini frame is down, had a recent experience experience with a 50 plus knot thunderstorm when the wind got up under the canvas, separated some of the frame tubing, and ripped the connector apart at the zipper.

So very good to see you back after the long silence! Like so many of the commenters above, I was worried that something had gone wrong. The gap did give me time to go back and start working through all the Expedition Evans "From the beginning" videos. Looking forward to the next update!

Jade has shown her skill set of measuring figuring angle and overall expert math skills over and over, So yes, at the beginning of the video when she said it is off because you didn’t listen is pretty much spot on. Haha,,, great video, so happy to see it starting to come together..

Hey, maybe you can get Jeanneau/Beneteau to license the design for your hard top when it's finished! One thing I loved was when you set the aft legs in place and they are a near perfect match to the lines of the hull.

You are worried about the small amount of weight that you are adding is nothing that a 50-foot sail boat can carry. You are creating something that is going to blow your mind. Wait till you're out there on a rainy day and are dry and don't have to scramble to tear down canvas. Well, you know you have been there, right!!!! Thank God you got your pride on track. You had a good idea, and now it's like magic fantastic. I had some hard words for you on you sitting on your dufter and crying. Now your on your way, thank you finally !!!! You two go for it, and don't worry about dust and dirt. Remember fixing it at first. You succeeded then, and you will succeed again. Only your going to be proud of your new implementation of an idea. Go for it, ❤🧜‍♂️🙏🔱please!

I love the look of your design. Contrary to what many might think, the design process is far more complex and intricate than it appears. I'm genuinely impressed that you chose to dive straight into creating the design rather than starting with a physical scale model. While CAD models offer precision and flexibility, they do not provide the tangible feel that allows for a deeper, more intimate study of the model. Regardless of the outcome, whether it turns out as expected or not, you will gain valuable insights from this experience. Design is inherently a learning process, and every step, whether successful or not, contributes to your growth and understanding. Each decision, iteration, and challenge encountered along the way enriches your skills and knowledge, ultimately shaping you into a more proficient and insightful designer.

All looks great. I'm concerned about the rear legs being too thin where it attaches to deck. The lateral forces with dinghy attached may exceed design strength. Maybe fill in with 3 inch block of wood or fiberglass for better support. I was thinking a 1 inch strip of teak/exotic wood as filler between the legs would look awesome.... thanks for sharing your adventures. Great vlog.

Glad you guys are back, but I still worry about the structural design of this. I agree, looks cooler than a prefab aluminum tower, but even with the magic words ‘carbon fiber’ I don’t see how this hollow structure of carbon, foam, and fiberglass will transfer the loads. I hope I am wrong, but please! load test before you go out. If it were my boat I would have installed the Tower-in-a-box and not have to worry about everything delaminating under load.

To slow the cure of the epoxy, it helps to have a shallow tray to hold your epoxy vs a cup (will not get as hot) as well as put your epoxy tray on ice. Those two things will help ALOT. Those are two tricks I used for doing huge layups on my airplane wings.

I have one concern. I am concerned with racking. I know you have an engineering background but I am concerned about the corners between the top and the legs. It needs a lot of fillet radius bracing, That will not affect the ability of the davits to lift a RIB but as you sail around and the whole structure gets shaken port to starboard it will eventually wear the connections at the corners. Eventually they will give and the whole thing will shift to the side in a parallelogram. Imagine standing beside the arch, pushing and pulling it for months with the weight of a RIB on it. The structure's own weight will help those corner joints fail. If I am not making sense try this. Put your hands flat in front of you, palms facing each other a shoulder width apart. Now lean them both left and right. That is the force I am talking about. We are not talking about static load here but dynamic. The old tubular structure had much less mass. I truly wish you only the best.
