What's the purpose of the leaf blower @7:09 when it's placed in the intake? Nice looking plane, like the subtle mods he did on it.

They are quite useful for many things. If you have a hot start, it can often be more helpful or equal to using your extinguisher as it helps to get air moving. on a day where there is no wind to help the turbine cool down it does that. It saves turbine battery power. as an example if I don't use my blower I can safely get 3 flights on my ultra flash before I have to recharge the turbine battery. If I use the blower I can get 4. I would also assume it saves on wear on the starter motor as your helping move air through the turbine. AND if nothing else, when you get hot at the field and need to cool off you can blow some air in your face!😂

@@thelightersideofrc Ahhhhhhhh. You use it as a huffer (external power cart) for starting and on this video it was being used as cooling after the flight. Speaking of the battery, is it used for starting only or is it needed to keep the turbine running? I've noticed the extinguishers and wondered if a hot start is a common enough occurrence that its really needed. I can't imagine what those chemicals would do to a $10k plane but yeah, if blowing it out works... Sorry, the thought of someone trying to blow out their plane strikes me as funny. Thanks for your patience with all the questions, I'm slowly learning about turbines. And also found out there's a club in my area (Phoenix) flying them and they're all not quite as expensive as the F-18 you did.

No problem Kent. Ask all the questions you want. The battery is used at all stages of running. It has the most power draw at start up as ignigtor and starter motor and fuel pump will pull power. When turbine is running its fuel pump pulling power and when cooling it’s the starter motor again.

The extinguisher we use is CO2. Don’t use powder as it would ensure to wreck some things. I’ve never had to use mine on a startup. I have used my blower a few times on various planes. I used my extinguisher for the first time in 10 years last year but it was on a crash.
