BUILDING AN INTAKE BAY ON A FARM POND
In this video, John G Adams and the team at Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. take an in-depth look as they install an intake bay on a farm pond. AN INTAKE BAY is bacically a large skimmer that gathers the surface debris from a pond into an area where it can be easily accessed for removal, preventing it from sinking to the bottom of the pond. You will see what the team does, step by step, as they mix educational commentary and time lapse video to show you what goes into this large scale water feature project. This intake bay video is the first part of a two part project and our next video will be part two, which is the building of the wetland filter and the waterfall that returns the water into the pond. You may also watch a previous video on our channel about the wetland filter and how we built it.

Tremendous job....Truly enjoyed it. May be a good idea to let contractors know that the transition from the beginning of the intake bay liner into the earth pond is literally held down by boulder weight and that no real seal isn't possible(typically) or necessary there. May seem obvious to more advanced builders but heck, is there such a thing anyway as we are always learning each and every day....:)

great video, thanks for the detailed showcasing. The Stone bridge looks great. Doesn't the water get in below the liner at the end of the stream?
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 4 года назад
yes, we did think that through- here’s my take on it: 1) We cover it in stone completely. Im sure the water can get under there but 2) it was well constructed and 3) we have hydraulic pressure on our side. I might consider working harder to seal the front -but our clay was doing a great job of holding the water in before and when we dug it out, there was no leaching through the old bank so I was (am) confident we are ok. I Don’t think we changed the exposure of water to soil- ie we were still in compacted subsoil where the potential exposure was-long answer sorry-short answer I thought about it but wasn’t scared too much-still holding tight out there ;)

We’ve done intakes on farm ponds as well. With the surrounding trees and expected leaf load, how do you propose to keep the intake bay clean enough for all the pumps to be able to run? Asking for a friend...
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 4 года назад
Obviously time of year will dictate what actions are necessary to remove the leaves. It will be a bit of work to keep it clean during the leaves falling off-season. We went big on the intake for this reason. The maintenance guys on the property plan on laying a net across the intake during leaf season so they can just pull it out daily or as needed. It is a great point that you bring up, the goal of the intake is to capture floating debris so that it can be physically removed, It does not create a maintenance free situation. It is actually a mechanical filter the same as any other skimmer! You get a gold star for asking the best question Dan😁

I found this video in my search for filtration options - thanks very much. What did you do with the liner at the mouth of the inlet at the existing edge of the pond? If you just secured it to the bottom won't the water want to go under the liner? Maybe you keyed it into the bank of the existing pond? Thanks for this video. It was the best one I've found. I've been thinking of using some left-over septic system parts to do exactly what you did here. It will take some ingenuity on my part but the pond is just a front yard affair so I'm sure I can DIY it. Your design has convinced me to go with an excess of in-filter water volume. Thanks again.

Love your videos! May I ask, how did you make provision for seasonal water level fluctuations? Or is this not a concern here? I figured it would be with it not being a lined pond!? Thanks in advance!
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 3 года назад
Not the case here, it is always being fed by the stream running in (albeit it very small one).I normally would design it to run at low water conditions if that were an issue though. Some features that are not properly designed or in extreme cases need to be shut off when low water occurs and that will kill your filter for sure!
@justinp7258
@justinp7258 3 года назад
@@KoiAddiction thanks for your quick response! I was gonna ask Professor Ed on his channel but maybe I can ask you here. Why do you fill your intake bay with the Aquablox rather then just large river rock? Is it cost effective to use the Aquablox with stone rather then just stone? Or is more of a concern of getting more open space for volume of water return?

We ran 20,000 GPH for the wetland filter. The filter was undersized for the pond we just built the biggest one we could with the budget that we had. We used also submersible pumps because the water feature was decorative, not technically a swimming pond.

The wetland should be higher than pond level, and the water level in the wetland should never change. The water level in the pond may fluctuate which might have an effect on the intake but I would consider that situation in my design on the front end. Did that answer help?

@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 4 года назад
Your size would be roughly 20 x 25 with six centipedes , two snorkels and about 100 small aqua blocks. Your flow rate should dial-in around 12,000 gallons per hour minimum flow, you will have to run the pump curve on your selected pumps in order to make sure you get that right. AquaScapes will help you lay that filter out if you send them a schematic to the tech department👍🏻 I put out a video not too long ago and Pumps and Pump curves so you’ll understand better how to select the right pump. Once you know all of the information on length of pipe diameter of pipe and elevation change you can get a hold of the pump manufacturers and they can spec a pump for you. On external pumps I prefer performance pro, on submersible pumps I prefer Tsurumi! Good luck and happy pondering😎

We sized that one to a budget not to the pond (per say)…The pond was about 1/2 acre-ish. Lots of variables based on these designs though. Refer to “all filters are better than no filters.” Anywhere between the “perfect design” and nothing is an improvement for sure!

@@KoiAddiction I am baffled by how to marry a farm pond to the components that typically have liners. In my area, farm ponds have packed clay bottoms. Can the bio filter be passive or does it require a pump? The intake bay has to have a pump, right ? so that the water gets pulled from that area to the falls. I want to have a pond sometime but I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. method to minimize what can go wrong.
