Thank you so much for the explanations! I enjoy your videos! This was a perfect find from your archives as I’m right at that point of getting a makers mark for my creations. It really pinpointed which way to go for what I need. Saved me money & time on buying unnecessary tools for methods that might not work well in the end. Look forward to any new content on leather crafting!

We have family that are Atkinson... & ... we had family from England the Grays... My Great Aunt taught me how to server "Proper Tea"... I used to have a Beautiful Tea Cup and Saucer from England, in 1977... but lost it when I was in a flood in 2008... I cried because my Grandmother had brought it back especially for me... I love a good spot of tea... ;)

Great to see videos from you again. Prayers for you and your health, hoping you feel better. I had to chuckle when you said it was a japanese plug...that's the same plug we use in the States. I never understood why other countries use different plugs?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 8 лет назад
UK plugs have an earth pin and a fuse inside.
@KitHoongTan
@KitHoongTan 8 лет назад
Voltage is also another reason for plug differences. The United States uses 120V while UK and Malaysia (where I come from) use 220-240V which would burn appliances which aren't multi-voltage compatible
@mortonsfarm652
@mortonsfarm652 6 лет назад
They all use different plugs because their power supply infrastructure evolved differently and progressed at different rates. There isn't any sort of universal standard yet as no governing body has world wide acceptance for standards.

great advice-thanks for sharing. My question is I want to put my makers mark on veg dyed leather sweatbands for hats, so the leather is much thinner than your sample leather you use, is there any alternative I can use on treated veritable dyed leather ? I'm assuming there is no way to do a heat stamping of these letterpress letters, any advice cheerfully
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 7 лет назад
You can hot stamp these no problem as shown in the other video on the letter stamps.
@karser6456
@karser6456 7 лет назад
thanks for the speedy reply...I checked out your other clips- the pressing machine you use, is there an alternative ? If absolutely essential, how much can I expect to spend on it ? I am a new to hat making and as you so wisely suggested, one needs to test market one's goods before jumping head first into long-term-use tools.

Hi Ian, great video, I’ve only just discovered your channel but I see I’m going to spend many hours learning from your videos. I’m thinking of ordering one of these stamps to use on my kilt straps, but I don’t have a press. Do you think it would work if I squeeze it in a G-clamp instead? Thanks Bobby

@johnh5008
@johnh5008 6 лет назад
He says it in the video if you watch to the end. 50-70 degrees C. He also shows that in the hot stamping video.
@bobbygordonkiltmakers3875
@bobbygordonkiltmakers3875 6 лет назад
John H that’s great, thank you. I bought an infrared thermometer to be sure. And I tried using my ratchet clamp, it it worked okay, but it wasn’t easy as you can’t see what it’s doing being sandwiched in between two bits of wood, so I’ve just invested in an arbor press, and it’s so much better!

Hello Ian when you used the heat gun, any idea what temperature the stamp was at when you pressed it on the leather?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 5 лет назад
I do it on time not temperature so it gets about 40-45 seconds with a 2kW heat gun and that's just about right. That will get the brass to about 60-80C though I don't think it's all that critical, if it's too hot it will burn the leather though so that's enough.

Hi Ian great video but I would not be inclined to use that soldering iron as theres no Earth on it ..keep the great work up
@RickYorgason
@RickYorgason 8 лет назад
I guess the soldering iron solution would be fine if you happen to have a temperature-controlled soldering station.
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 8 лет назад
yes I think so as long as it went down cool enough, it's harder to apply pressure with a soldering iron compared to an arbor press though so it's not something I'd recommend overall

If I don't have an arbor press yet, if I heated to the correct temperature, could I get away with using hand pressure?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 4 года назад
unless you can exert a metric tonne of pressure with your hand no! You can use a g-clamp or similar if the piece will fit in but it's fiddly, I would just buy the press.
@xderiwx
@xderiwx 4 года назад
@@Leodis.Leather Thanks! Would proper heat and a heavy hammer be any better? I seen some videos of people using just normal tooling mallets/mauls with cased veg tan that seem to work. Also, literally just bought one of your patterns a few hours ago. Thank you!!
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 4 года назад
xderiwx yes if you’re casing the leather a hammer will work fine, the press is more for hot stamping but works with the cased leather too

@TheTipsyRooster
@TheTipsyRooster 7 лет назад
Well Ian, you may have described exactly what you purchased, but if you look at the current website, it does not effectively lay out where to select/order what you have. (at least from what I have seen) I may be mistaken, but it gives no direction to any particular ordering options like a traditional site would. Is it in the portfolio section? I'm only asking you because I'd like to purchase something similar in size to yours, but without some of the other accessories. Thank you
