Thanks for this video. I’ve been looking for a good hobby that I could also make money off of and I’ve always loved the idea of smithing. You are one of the few people I’ve seen that does it in a simple way without the thousands of dollars in equipment and showed it in an easy to follow way. I have leafsprings from a 51 chevy truck I’m gonna try this with.

Sweet, good luck dude! Starting out trying to make a sword might be more challenging than you might think, but it can't hurt to give it a try.

Really, dont start out making a sword. Make knives, hooks, leaves, chisels etc then try a sword.

Very cool. Proves that good work can be done even with a basic forge like that.

Cool, keep doing this sweet stuff, I have never forged a sword. I forged a dagger blade last week, it's still under finishing forging and is by far the longest blade i have made, might reach to 12 inches

Looking awesome so far. Still kind of surreal that you can just make a sword in your back yard.

What was the purpose of annealing it if you were just going to be forging it again??

You know leaf springs work like beers.. they come in two's.

Nice dude. Where did you get the yellow chisel?
@PhilBaumhardt
@PhilBaumhardt 3 года назад
The yellow chisel is from Home Depot, the red chisel is from Blacksmith's Depot (Kayne and Sons).

By watching Forged In Fire, they recommend leaf srings prior to 1950ish so as to get pure carbon steel and to avoid modern alloys that inhibit harding and tempering for knife edges. Do you find that to be true?
@PhilBaumhardt
@PhilBaumhardt 3 года назад
To be honest, I have no way of knowing when these springs were made when I find them, but I haven't had too much trouble heat treating them. I've only had one set of springs that never quenched as hard as I would like, but I'm sure most of what I've worked with is post-1950's.

I'm curious, about how long from start to finish did this project take?
@PhilBaumhardt
@PhilBaumhardt 3 года назад
A little over a month for the sword alone, not including the scabbard.

Hello, beautiful sword, one question, how thick and wide was the spring material in the start?
@PhilBaumhardt
@PhilBaumhardt 2 года назад
I believe the piece of the spring I started forging with was 7mm thick and an inch and a half wide.

This one sold for about a grand, so if you're interested in making something custom for you the best way to get a hold of me is to message me through the Etsy webstore. Thanks for watching!

I VERY much appreciate that you do most of your forming at the forge rather than the grinder. Watching somebody grind for HOURS is boring as hell. I'll be your very suburban neighbors hate your guts though lol.
