Today we're going to finish off our custom brake and clutch pedal setup!
This all started as an off the shelf 90 degree pedal box (sometimes called an "under dash" configuration) though it's had a few dozen hours of alterations put into it, to make it what we have now! It's been a lot of work learning how to calculate pedal ratios, find ideal master cylinder sizes, and we've ultimately had to decide whether or not this is going to work at all - knock on wood though, I think it's going to be perfect!
Like you, we can't wait to see this beast on the roads someday, so I hope you'll SUBSCRIBE and hit the notification bell so you won't miss that experience with us!
Please SHARE this video with your friends, it's a small step that will really help us out!

Please work responsibly and do not mess around with machinery that you are not comfortable with, even if we made it look easy!

The quality of work on the car is exemplary. The proof is seeing the quality of the parts you are machining and their ability to work in unison. What you don't see is the editing, sound track, music choice, lighting, color correction, continuity of production, graphics, audio and voiceover and script to tell the story. Your video production per episode is some of the best I have seen on RU-vid for this type of content. Very well done and very good job to you and anyone that might be helping you "behind the scenes." I already can't wait for your next episode.

It is so impressive how you are fabricating every piece of this car with hand tools bought from Canadian Tire and Princess Auto. In a small garage! Doing so much with so little. No WaterJet or even a plasma cutter for you guys. That would be cheating... Better “lathe” than never! What do you think our first turning project will be?
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 5 месяцев назад
Get familiar with cutting threads on that lathe as soon as you can. There's nothing more convenient than being able to make your own shanked bolts with custom lengths for the shank. So much easier than trying to work around what you can find at the local hardware store.
@philtucker1224

We mustn’t forget why these boys are spending project time together. There are so many levels of benefit. (There is no published price list for “benefits”) if you wanted to value the car based on average value of automotive labour hours, it’s already well over a million dollars. If you wanted to value the project based on the beautiful time that Father and son were able to work together, think together and talk together then you’re already up in the billion dollar bracket. I was just 29 when my wonderful dad passed, exactly 40 years ago this month..

Brilliant! All us armchair mechanics said all along that the servo is way too big! You will be glad of it though... big heavy wheels and tyres to slow down, loads of extra static mass to haul up, bigger brakes and competition pads and so on, so the right decision in the end. The pedal box is a work of art, all fabricated on a beaten up workmate, 1 pair of molegrips and an angle grinder. Machine shop specialist will be green with envy! Stunning achievement, well done!

Michael only started a couple of years ago; Binky was a rusty, dying Mini almost eight years ago when Richard and Nik decided to take a couple hundred kilos of rust and turn it into a really nifty "touring car" for two. Then again, Michael has known pretty much just what he wanted from day one and has avoided a few "re engineerings" that Binky has needed to get to here. And after all the work to get this far, I cannot see Fanatik much stumble and not finish it well- and I expect it will be both fast and pretty stable. I am hoping his cousin the butt has some really pithy things to say when it gets to be wiring time!

Another great video. As someone who owns both a "real" lathe and one of these hobby lathes, here are a few hints and tips from my experience. 1) Stay within the limits of the lathe. You aren't going to take big cuts at high speed with high IPM. 2) Replace the cheap plastic speed change gears with metal ones ASAP. The plastic ones will break sooner or later. If your lathe already has metal gears, you are ahead of the game. 3) Replace the spindle bearings with tapered roller bearings. These can take thrust loads and bring more precision to your cuts. 4) Invest in a set of indexable carbide tooling. In the long run this is cheaper than replacing entire cutting tools each time. 5) Working with stainless steel on these lathes is tricky. They don't have quite the HP to muscle the cuts you need in SS and taking tiny cuts in SS is a good way to destroy tooling (ask me how I know this). 6) It looks like you have worked on the bed, but make sure the carriage is tight and has parallel travel along the entire bed length. 7) Make sure the spindle box is aligned to the lathe bed (these things are mass produced to lowest cost and QC is a myth) and that the spindle is aligned with the tailstock for both taper and height. Lastly, buy a tool cabinet for all the tooling, lathe chucks, and extra nifty things you are going to absolutely "need" once you start working with the lathe 😁. This is a disease that is an endless rabbit hole of "Ooooh, that looks nice, I need that".

I love watching your videos, your engineering skills are on another level from what I could achieve, I do understand why it takes such a long time between videos. I have been installing an oil cooler assembly on my Triumph Vitesse Convertible with the 2-Litre straight 6, there is hardly any room around that engine, and so far, I've been at it for three weeks, admittedly I'm 65 and don't have the energy that I used to have, but it's been a real PITA, with finding room for the 13 row radiator, and the thermostat and the adaptor for the temperature gauge bulb, and the filter adaptor, with all the barbs and hoses! Anyhow, your build is also very special as a father and son project. I hope you enjoy your unique GT6 for many years to come! p.s. pay special attention to heat production from that big engine getting into the cabin, because even standard GT6s can get 'rather warm' inside!

I love your fabrication and it will be tough for me to equal it when I build my vette. I thought your firewall was going to be removeable, but I guess you decided to weld it in and make an access panel for the fluids.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 5 месяцев назад
Thanks man, yeah we're going to have the bulk of the firewall be a permanent structure in order to tie it into the rest of the body better, but there will be two generous sized access panels which should still let us service most items quite easily. 👍

Quick suggestion: I will want to put some sort of curtain or door panels over the storage space under the lathe. Especially if you are putting battery operated tools there. You really don't want any cuttings getting inside one of those. They won't last long if you do. Ask me how I know. Otherwise, great video as always.

I love watching your content. So informative and with such high quality workmanship. It makes me yern for my mk3 spitfire and wonder what I might have done with it if I'd kept it instead of selling 40 plus years ago. Keep at it.

Thanks Simon, luckily they haven't risen much in value compared to a lot of old classics, so maybe you could get one and have some fun! 👍

You could move that exhaust pipe coming out of the header and get a couple of inches.

great fun to watch as always. I take it that your firewall will have some removable plates so you can get at the reservoirs for he brake and clutch

You got it Dave, will need access panels, but in such a way as to retain as much structure as we can. 👍

First time on the channel. Nice work on the pedal box. It’s great you have a lathe, they are extremely useful for precision work but I’m surprised I didn’t see a belt linisher. That is my go to tool when fabricating. Great channel 👍

Would love a belt sander, just hard to find the room and cash for a good one! We get by pretty well with just the grinder though, so I'll have to look forward to that as an "eventually" tool! Cheers ✌️
