In this tutorial I demonstrate a way to prepare the surface of the rod blank prior to adding handles and reel seats to your next custom rod build.

I think Scotch-Brite or a fine sand paper to remove the gloss on the handle section of the blank would do a much better job then just gouging up the finish randomly with a file. It's no harder to do and creates a full mating surface.
