Thanks for this simple to follow tutorial! Have you ever considered making videos about how to configure xmonad? It'd make an interesting video that's for sure, or even better a video going through you setting up your whole setup as if it were the first time!

So you just made a .zsh folder? And filled it with what? What is on GitHub? Isn't that the same as installing? I always install it on Kali, but syntax highlighting usually fails and everything else works.

Not the same as installing the entire program/repo. Creating a directory (ie .zsh) then just going to the ohmyzsh repo on GitHub and finding the plugin you want or just writing the plugin you want and storing it in the newly created dir, then sourcing that dir from .zshrc, you can skip installing the entire program and all the extras it adds that you maybe don't need or want to use. Just a way to save from adding unneeded and unused "bloat" (for lack of a better term) to your system.

Didn't work for me. The "ZSH_THEME" variable is not part of ZSH, but oh-my-zsh. I tried multiple themes, including some very simple ones, but none worked. All the ones I tested seem to use this variable somewhere in the script.

Interesting, I never had any issues, I have not used zsh for a long time now so I will have to go back and check on that.

I have a pretty neat and simple function to install both plugins, themes and completions. It’s approximately 15-20 lines of code or something. No need for bloated OMZ or people trying to sell me t-shirts 😂 Most people installing OMZ probably only want a nice theme and/or auto completion and syntax highlighting anyway. The rest of it are mostly aliases and stuff you can configure and set up yourself. Especially regarding Zsh. You can make it pretty nice even without plugins with all the different options and bindings etc. But I don’t blame people who want something easy and don’t want to actually know how Zsh works. I did use OMZ in the very beginning too… but it’s just bloat!

Agreed, most of the time people are not interested in learning how something works, they just want it to work and look good, I get it, there is nothing wrong with that, but you are absolutely correct, it is unnecessary bloat to those who are willing to learn and do things themselves.
