This little Fergy TX9 Moviestar came to me with a few faults. Poor Pin Amp, definition, and it was in a desperate need for a clean. A full once over was required on this one.
Watch on for some cap checking, cleaning case, PCBs, and more!
Suffering from no degauss too, this was the first fault I fixed. It was found that poor solder joints was the cause. Easy one. My customer was amazed by my trick with degaussing the screen with an old tape eraser!
If you’d like your vintage tv to be repaired, and you’re based in the UK, get In touch, at Mullard Repairs!

Back in the early 1980s I was an apprentice tv engineer for D|E|R I worked on plenty of TX9, TX10, TX90 & TX100 sets. Happy days.

I remember when the TX9 was launched, we bought one for the Crystal Palace transmitter Monitoring & Information Centre. I remember we were very impressed with a picture quality and it proved to be extremely reliable. Although we had a number of professional receivers and monitors, it was important to have some domestic TVs as well as sometimes certain transmitter faults might not show up on professional receiver, but would show up on a domestic TV set.

Great job on that. I have the same model as that. A superb set with lots of detail in the picture. Also rather impressive sound.

Great video! I have the Ferguson tx movie star model no 3781. However I can’t figure out how to get video input on it. Any input would be appreciated. This is my first time with an older tv like this

Did you not see the short segment of the set in the bath?

i skipped a bit through the video but i will check it today, thank you...i would be worried about cans with coils inside and transformers and other hollow things like the delay line etc....but it looks so nice....i mostly work on older tvs with point to point wiring and the chassis sometimes are filthy

@@MrHBSoftwarein terms of cleaning, I agree. You need to be careful with what you’re working with. With PCBs, I first spray with WD40. This stops the circuit board and components from corroding or the original flux reacting and causing an awful white paste to form on the PCB. I rarely use soap, but when I do I let the board sit and I scrub the underside. Never use hot water. I dry circuit boards mainly either in the oven, a hot air gun, or in front of a fan. I work on point to point too. You need to be careful there. A lot of the older stuff is less well insulated, transformers and so on. I’ve gotten away with soaking dirty radio chassis in clear water, or just rinsing really. Wax insulated stuff always holds moisture. It’s not worth it. WD40 and a rag, brush and hoover works well there.
