Austin-based musician & engineer Andy Macintyre has owned a 5057 Orbit 16x2 Summing Mixer for about 2 years, and we checked in with him to see what it was doing for his home studio. Thanks for being a customer & fan, Andy!

Are you summing individual tracks or group buses into the 5057?

The answer is "yes" to both. It depends on the song/track, but typically I spread the Drums and percussion out across 2 or 3 different inputs and utilize the 'Mono' buttons (Kick, Snr, / Lv's, Bass Git). Then I'll send out group packages to the other stereo inputs on the 5057. Lately, I've been using less parallel crush busses so I'll send the FX channels out as a group to the last 1 or 2 stereo channels on the 5057. My "Sum Out" channels, more and more, are laid out like a VCA / center section. Its a pretty satisfying way to mix! I love it - Let me know if I need to clarify anything :)

I just switched from pro tools to logic . In pro tools your able to create master channels and set the input of those channels to the individual channels on the orbit . How can I do that in logic so I can push into the 5057 ?

Congrats on the switch! PT is the slightly better drum editor. To answer your question I'd suggest 2 different ways to approach the 5057 in Logic: One way is to directly send the outputs of your instruments to individual channels on the 5057, ex. (ALL drum channels mono or stereo go to 1 or 2 different stereo channels on the 5057. You'll have to pick what channels you'd want to route to but I usually pick Channels 3-4 / 5-6 ... Channel 1-2 is the DAC monitoring channel) Next, you can spread out the rest of the mix across the remaining channels from their relative voices. This approach can leave your Daw's Mix window looking super clean and easier to scroll through. The 2nd way to do this is a bit less linear: In the box, you'll want to route entire sections of the mix into its own Submix. In other words, If you have 3 different kicks, route them in the box to a Kick Buss, and do the same for the rest of the percussion, and ALL basses, ALL Guitars, ALL other voices (however you hear/see fit), that way each group of instruments route to their own busses. Set the output of those Submix busses to the input of the relative summing channels of the 5057. Ex. ALL kicks go to Mono ch 3, ALL Basses go to Mono ch 4, ALL Toms go to Stereo ch 5/6, ALL Vocals go to mono Ch 7, ALL Acg's go to Stereo ch 9/10, ALL Crush Busses go to ch 11/12, ALL Dlays-Flerbs go to Stereo Ch 13/14, all the way down till you fill up the hallways of the 5057. These 2 approaches aren't that disparate; the submixing approach is more foolproof and perhaps easier to keep track of who is going where, why, and how. You may find yourself liking the direct approach more. Tip: Make sure you label your 5057 OUT Aux's accurately! This will save you many many headaches 😅Ex. Kick Sum, Snr Sum, Perc Sum, Bass Sum, ACG Sum, E GiT Sum, Synth Sum, Lv Sum, Bkg Sum, Fx Sum 1, Fx Sum 2 ... Final step is grabbing all the 5057 OUT Aux's, highlight the faders, and push up the level into the 5057 until you see the lights blink Green and then Red on the 5057. What you do after that is your call : ) Best, Andrew

I'd like a stereo box only, with access to red/blue at the same time. The function of summing is not relevant, its the colour regardless of summing or not where the potential benefit is

You’re wrong dude. Summing is everything when it comes achieving the subtle separation & space between the tracks and not to mention the bigger dimension and width when it’s all summed together. I would take 16 analog mixed tracks summed down to stereo over just stereo all day, everyday. No comparison.

@@theredfaceofficial Where is your source on that? Summing together in analog without any transformers etc, only with wire sounds the same as ITB summing, meaning the only difference in sound is circuit, and not the actual summing itself
