Me: "I'll have a Double Goomba with an incorrect oil grade, please." Many fast-lube places: "Would you also like an overpriced air filter to go with that today?"
You'll probably never see this, but I'm a Goomba because I've owned my truck for twenty-ish years and I cannot get the Crush Washer off, and it has never leaked. I even have an action shot of my "little green submarine" going through the flood waters of Harvey in Houston back in 2017. Keep up the great entertaining content!
How fucking tight are y’all making these drain plugs. I’ve used the same washer on my car for 6 years now. Regular oil changes etc. it’s just now getting to a omg I need to think about replacing it sometime later lol
I buy my OEM filters in bulk from a Toyota dealership on eBay, they throw in a free bag of crush washers every time. Unless you just love the self lubricating chassis, why skimp on such a simple thing?
It absolutely baffles me how people will risk using a crush washer multiple times, let alone. quick lube places doing it. I’m by no stretch of the imagination a mechanic but am capable enough to change my own oil. Always use a new crush washer and if one isn’t supplied with the new oil filter, a quick stop to the dealer usually gets me a handful of them. Cheap insurance, you might call it.
I didn’t use a new crush washer or oil filter gasket last time I got so pissed. I opened the damn package and it was fighting so I opened it that shot flew everywhere I. My bmw I said fuck it that ain’t ever coming out.
There are some things in life you can save money on. This is one where it's not worth it. If your engine has issues in a few years down the road I'm pretty sure you won't be thinking the thousands of dollars in repairs was worth the few dollars you saved on re-using a washer.
All my Hondas and my old beater Volvo have crush washers that are changed every time, regardless of what they look like. None of them ever leak, and I never have to torque the pan bolt down more than a bit beyond finger tight. I drive like 36,000 miles a year, and three of my vehicles have well over 300,000 miles on them. They are old, but tight and dry. (Giggity!) My 2013 Jeep Wrangler has a captured rubber grommet on the pan bolt. It too has never even dripped, not once, and I also never have to install it more than a quarter-turn beyond finger tight. I don't know what is in the water at these oil change places, but it seems to cause mental retardation in the employees.
Mine was thin as anything and I was concerned I couldn't get the washer off. I was contemplating putting another on. But I thought I would at least try to remove it. It came off easily. The oil changes were done by a "trusted" garage. Part of the "trusted garages" network. Using a washer twice, first and second is fine, but the 3rd? Replace it.
I use a razor to separate the washer from the plug, that creates a small enough gap to fit my pocket flat head screwdriver, after that I bend the washer up, cut it with a pair of snips and off it goes.
I was working for a week at a Dodge dealership and I asked the tech that was training me cuz he was supposed to be leaving soon if we change the drain plug gasket or the flat washer he said not unless you're coming off, I still requested a part to change it every time just to make sure I got told off LMFAO, I did talk a guy into coming to our dealership for a set of tires new brakes all around and get a exhaust gasket changed he said it's a little fat guy with a big beard that's covered in black oil he's the one that told me lol, desiel oil
Hey, if one is good, two must be better. Right? Also, plastic is better than metal because it crushes easily, which means it seals better. Right? And, why replace that washer thingy, it cuts into the profit. Right?
Yes they're good. Copper is just a little harder than aluminum but still soft enough so both of them deform to create a seal. The difference is the application, if more torque is needed then copper is used. If you wanna be safe use aluminum
Eh say what you want but I've never had a leaking crush washer and I used them more than a few times. Cheap sure but they don't need changed every time and if you do then you also are an idiot and change your oil every 3k.. Waste of money.
