When your parts are up to 42-feet-long, it's essential that you have a CNC multitasking machine that can precision machine each feature in a single set-up, which until recently was not possible at FIBA Technologies.
FIBA Technologies, a third-generation, family-owned company that produces custom tubes for gas containment and transportation applications, discovered this when starting to update its machining capabilities.
For years, FIBA's machine shop utilized two three-axis horizontal machining centers to manufacture necks and threads for its gas containment vessels. However, these machines could only process features on one side, requiring the use of an overhead crane to load, machine, unload, flip, and reload each vessel to complete the process.
Facing rising demand from customers in the space exploration, alternative fuels, and electronics industries, the shop opted to upgrade to a more efficient CNC multitasking machine. This new machine, the Soraluce FLP-14000 from Morris and @selectmachiningtech, performs all their milling and turning operations on both ends in a single setup.
The Soraluce FLP-14000 features a traveling column that can travel 14,000 mm on the X-axis, which is enough to move from one end of the long vessels to the other. With 2,200 mm in the Y-axis and 1,500 mm on the Z-axis, FIBA is able to machine both ends on up to 3 vessels in a single set-up, eliminating the need for their overhead crane to lift and flip the tubes.
The Soraluce FLP 14000 CNC features an H205 automatic indexing universal spindle head that can index on vertical and diagonal axes in 2.5-degree increments. This versatility allows the machine to conduct vertical and horizontal CNC milling and turning, as well as drilling and milling at any angle, enhancing its operational flexibility.
