Another muggyweld.com photo testimonial. This 1989 Continental Engine Block from a Case Skid Steer had a large hole punched through it, caused by a thrown rod. A MuggyWeld.com customer used 77 Cast Iron electrodes to TIG weld the cast-iron block. Arc or stick welding can be used to make the same repair. The cast iron exploded into pieces. Luckily the cast-iron shrapnel was large enough to put the puzzle back together to make a sound weld. Before welding, bevel all edges and clean the scale off the cast. Weld one inch at a time and peen between passes.
Cory Tig welded the cast using 2% thoriated tungsten and argon gas. The engine could have been repaired using an arc welder as well. When welding a crack on an engine block, bevel 3/4 the way through for best penetration. Preheating the cast around the weld area to 300 to 400°F is advised. This helps remove moisture in the iron. The 77 electrode is an all-position rod. Keep a close arc when stick welding. If welding a long crack, start at one end, then the middle, then the far end. Try to keep an even heat through the welding process. Cast iron usually cracks going from hot to cold. If cracking occurs, weld shorter beads. When welding in the field block the wind from cooling the weld.
Step by step instructions on how to weld cast iron are included with the electrodes.
