Maps are a fantastic way to communicate spatial data - and lucky for us Power BI has loads of awesome mapping visuals. In this short video tutorial we walk through the key steps to creating custom maps in Power BI, from how to find, modify and convert your spatial files to add them into your Power BI reports using the Shape Map visual - which is our go-to visual for when we want to create really clean and simple maps.

Excellent video! Now I know hot to upload my shapes in Power BI. But I still don't get a point: after upload a shape, how you insert a base map in the same box?

Hi, I already have a dataset with product data over each postcode, county, region in the UK. I wanted to use shape map to display this data for which I loaded the json file and dataset but unfortunately the map doesn't show up properly. Can you help me with this, please?

This is a great video I have worked with some shape maps and I learn a lot with your videos, you can skip the step of using Excel to read DBF file by connecting directly with Power BI using this M code let Source = OleDb.DataSource("Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:\dbfFolder\;extended properties=dBASE IV", [Query="select * from [myFile.dbf]"]) in Source Hope you can test and use in your dashboards.

Great Video. Thanks a lot! I have a scenario where I have an online ArcGIS map created by the gov which is exactly what I need. (with different districts cut into small polygon pieces by certain demographics criteria). Is there a way I can easily import that ArcGIS map into power BI to show the exact same thing? Or do I need to go through the same process you introduced in the video where I have to obtain the shape file convert into JSON and then import into Power BI to recreate the same map?

Thanks for your comment... this is a very common issue which 9 times out of 10 relates to the underlying coordinate (projection) of the shapefile. David Eldersveld has a great blog post walking through how to troubleshoot and change the projection of your mapping file: dataveld.com/2016/09/01/overcoming-potential-power-bi-shape-map-rendering-issues/. I hope this helps!

Hi Yacine, not that I am aware of. The only way is through tooltips on-hover... I'll let you know if we come across any other solutions.
