Customising Poundland's biggest solar globe (great base for projects)

One of the best bits about this product is the large diffused globe with matching base. Aside from customising the colour and intensity, it could be adapted to make a simple USB powered night light, or even a glowing pendant light with an alternative power source.
I've included an openscad script at the bottom of this description. It can be used to create a base for this light to allow it to sit on a windowsill or table.
The script has variables that can be adjusted to make it suitable for many other things too.

That globe will direct any moisture right into the base threads. There are base drain holes, but now lets hit it with warm sunlight as the rain stops. A Solar mini-sauna bio-dome for electronics to relax in. See you at Poundland next season.

As Clive says in the video, moisture seems to destroy pretty much any of these garden solar lights, even the expensive ones. Not just that, but the solar panels on lights where the panel is exposed to the elements seem to go quite 'milky' quite quickly.

Maybe a thin bead of silicone around the globe just above the threads could help keep water from traveling into the base?

A wipe of veg oil only on the silver bit and then run a bead of silicone around it on the globe and against the silver.. and possibly bung the holes with silicone and put in a few silica bags to remove water..

I have to admit that when I saw the thumbnail, I thought to myself, "That's a lot of space inside that globe; I bet Clive is going to put some vertical structure up the middle to light things up in an interesting way.". Ah well, maybe in the future; that is a lot of available space , but I suppose things would block the solar panel. Love the video, as always. thanks Clive.

Comment on mil standard soldering. In the late 60's I was trained to DEF5000, the then military standard for soldering components onto circuit boards (OK, I'm a, retired, elderly flatulent). Each finished joint was to be a separate hemisphere on the track side of the circuit board. The pass/fail test was a square of 0.1" veroboard and we had to populate it with 1" loops of stranded wire across adjacent holes. Each joint had to be separate and the instructor would drag it across the back of his hand, any scratch marks would fail. I had been soldering since the age of 11 and passed first time. As a reward (??!) I was given a 0.05" board and told to do the same thing, although with solid core. Sod of a job and technically failed it because of too many joined up hemispheres! The reason for hemispherical joints (pre-trimming leads) was to prevent high voltage corona discharge points. In those days, apparently, it was not uncommon to have HT sections on some boards, hence the regulation. Once you get into that habit it is difficult to give it up, even when prototyping.

I'm so pleased someone else has spotted the long lead/short lead thing, but it's not limited to red LEDs. About a decade ago I salvaged a load of cheap LEDs from a bunch of broken/faulty cheap fairground light toys (that cheaply made they'd not trimmed the legs) and was confused that a large number of yellow and blue LEDs seemed to be faulty until I reversed the polarity and discovered the swapped leads.

I really like openscad but only use it for 2D work on my laser cutter. I love the way it enables me to programmatically define hole sizes and positions etc making it very easy to update things. I'm currently building my new house and need some load-spreading pads to go under steel joists - openscad can export DXF which I'm about to send off to a company to laser cut them out of 12mm steel plate - the costs are surprisingly reasonable with a set of 10 pads plus a few other bits costing around £150 delivered. Not bad at all for 30kg of metalwork :)

Hi Clive, first, many thanks for your video output, Re: cropping before or after - I used to be involved with PCB production many years ago, components would be place uncropped and the board would be wave soldered after this the leads would be cropped and the boards would then go for a second wave solder. The idea behind this is that the second pass would tin all the bare copper ends thus preventing long term oxidising.
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist 22 дня назад
Cropping the leads is considered to give the solder joint a mechanical shock which may result in a dry joint later. I normally cut before soldering but if I have to cut after soldering I reflow the joint with a little more solder. But then I was working on pcb's that had to withstand high levels of vibration from jet engines just behind the pilot 😊 what your taught as 17 year old tends to stay with you for the rest of your life.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 22 дня назад
When I was in the USAF in the seventies we were taught to crop leads before soldering too, but not for that reason. It was because you don’t want to cut off ends to ping into the rest of the electronics, never to be seen again until they short something important out. I suppose both reasons are good reasons.
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist 21 день назад
@@markfergerson2145 well we had to also bend the leads flat to the pcb and along the axis of the track. Once soldered you had to still be able to see the lead with just the right amount of solder forming a filet between board and lead. Any joint that did not pass inspection got a little paint dot by it. As the only bloke in the room and only a 16-17 old, I'd get a smack for every bad joint. They would take turns ;-) not sure it would be allowed nowadays but you learnt to solder fast, it was like having 20 mums checking your work:-) to tell the truth it was a great time and I'd never go back and change anything.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 21 день назад
@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist Yep, very similar criteria in the USAF except for RF leads. With those you had to be careful about avoiding crosstalk. Good thing for me that I learned to make good solder joints in High School radio shop. And don’t get me started on tying wire bundles with cord.

Clive - at 8:20 where you reinsert the screw asking 'is it going to go in the right position' (thread-wise) - there's an easy way top ensure correct alignment. If you put the crew in and gently turn anti-clockwise you will feel when it drops into the correct thread place... then tighten it up. Self tappers can only go in the socket twice, once correct, once incorrect and then after that you're 'screwed' as the hole is stripped so a few seconds of sensitivity pays dividends! Same for screwing into aluminium too 👍

Just brought some solar lights and decided to follow your advice Clive and smeared the circuit board in Vaseline to protect it from moisture. Problem is the Vaseline quickly turned to liquid when the sun started beating down on my solar lights and pooled inside the glass cylinders the LED's shine down into. Thinking I need to use a grease with a higher melting point like silicone perhaps? Or could just spray some conformal coating on the board but degreasing it now is going to be fun 😁

The thing with these devices is you can repurpose the casings for other projects, as I am sure Clive and everyone else knows already. Last year or the year before I bought three 'pillar' lamps from Robert Dyas (which I noticed on Monday were on sale for £2.49 each in the Weybridge branch!). The lower two thirds or so is empty rattan effect plastic with a diffuser section on top (which just pulls off) and the top section is where the leds, etc, are. They are supposed to light up with a flaming effect, but all three have stopped doing that, even though they haven't even been outdoors. I thought of replacing the electronics etc with colour changing leds, an esp32 and a connector to make it all work off a 5V power supply. The esp32 and WLED software will make for some nifty effects!

Whilst many people believe many garden solar lights are good for the environment,the opposite is true.They last a very short period of time and therefore produce a lot of waste when they are disposed of.If you actually want to do something positive which does reduce carbon and waste,install PV panels with a battery and you can run normal led lamps off that.

Sunlight is said to be about 2kw per square meter (think that might just be a heat measurement though) you might be able to work out the maximum potential of the solar panel based on its size compared to the square meter, but I'm sure the bright light is about right, light transmission is reduced by about a third for most materials also I see it running out of power quite quickly if you wanted a decent intensity though, specially on that 200ma cell

It may just be the white balance of your setup, but the original LEDs looked more like ~5000K (daylight) than ~3500k (bright white).

I built one of these using an arduino nano, and a strip of WS2812 LEDs. It looked really neat, even just running the demo program. Then it fell off the shelf and broke...

I was thinking that the triple A cell is unforgivably puny until I thought about how many hours of sunlight these things can be expected to get per day. A larger cell is pretty much pointless in all of the UK and most of Northern and Central Europe, same as it is here in the Pacific Northwet. In the Southern tier of US states the poor thing won’t last the night without at least one double A.

Next modification: take out the battery and wire the solar to the LED's and use a flashlight to start your perpetual energy machine.

Could you maybe fit a larger cell, maybe an 18650 depending on how big the stake post is inside of it since its plastic? or maybe a AA cell if an 18650 is too big, then you could seal the post so water wont get inside of it. (Depending on the voltage of the AAA)

I never look at the length of leads. In LEDs, cathode will always be the thick "shelf" that the die sits on, and anode the little stick connected to the die with the Au wire.

Years ago from Dollar tree I bought six flower lights and modified them to take a C size battery I was in Dollar tree yesterday and they had literally one left so I bought it in case one of mine dies

I wonder how easy it'd be to remove the stake holding portion at the bottom and make it flat so I can set it down on a table. I wanna get one and stuff it with 18650's and neopixels, charged with a USB C socket

Perhaps one of those slow colour changing RGB LEDs might look nice inside that globe. Just the one though, because otherwise they'd get out of sync and it might not look as nice. Or I could be wrong, and two might look more interesting.

Globe is almost the same size as the light I had in my bathroom in one of the old places years ago... would be better with a more serious battery, more solar cells and either an SMD chip LED or filament LED's.

I want to buy a couple of dozen, replace the LEDs with color-changing ones, and stick them all over my yard. Party!
@kimchristensen2175
@kimchristensen2175 21 день назад
You'd need to add a diode and capacitor for that. Otherwise, those color-changing would stay at one color all the time because the pulsed DC would reset them continuously.

The military spec is applicable to things like air to air missiles etc. Those scellerate so hard they are doing mach 2 more than the launch aircraft in the length of the rail (typically 2 meters. IE they pull 3000G for the first few miliseconds. If your garden light gets subjected to 1;10 of that I would love to know how.

Drop it from the roof onto a concrete path? I expect other parts would fail before the LED soldering under such conditions.
