I found this product a while ago, and when I bought new pads (all white) I wanted to customize the compare. Searching online, I found a few different options, but it seems the most durable and easiest to use was the Plastidip spray!
After testing a small section for durability, it lasted great playing 2-3 times a week for over 6 months. So, with the forced break, I decided to customize them with a little more color and pizazz!
Follow along as I teach you how to use this great product that will allow you to customize your own goalie pads!!

This is really cool. Does a vintage brown sound like a possibility?
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 3 года назад
Probably. Depends on the colors available. If you’re wanting to paint a vintage brown set, the material may be the factor. Test a small area (mask it off, shoot a small, inconspicuous patch of black from cheap can from Walmart and see what it does. Let me know, I’d be curious. Thanks for watching!

Does it work on black pads
@goaliegeorge

I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t. Just know light colors on a dark background may need more layers to get a solid bright color! Enjoy.

Do you think the plastidip would work on the spears of Bauer 3x’s pads and blocker??? (And if so, what type of plastidip should I get the flat or gloss? Which one would last longer and overall just look better
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 2 года назад
I don’t see why not. I don’t think durability matters on flat or gloss, it’s just the finish. So, select which you want and test it. Tape off a small square and spray.. if it holds on then you’ll be fine. Peel and the start masking away. Thanks!

Should I sand out bubbles? I did 4 coats and I have some bubbling. My pads have knee rolls so wasn't expecting perfection
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge Год назад
Sand? No. Where did these bubbles appear? In the paint, or is there something on the surface that’s causing it? If paint, then peel it up, and try again using thinner coats. You won’t be fully covered in the first pass/coat. Thinner coats also prevent runs. If on the surface, then make sure the surface is clear and clean. I went over mine with a magic eraser to clear our any issues that could cause the paint to not adhere to the pads. But if you try to sand the paint, you’ll peel that paint right off…. Yikes! I hope this helps…. Thanks for watching!

Plastidip doesnt leave any color on the pad when removed, so it doesnt sink in to the material? Got some new plain white pads, but the idea of spray painting doesnt sound tempting eventhough I am familiar with plastidip!
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 3 года назад
No, it is removable. But, that’s a good thing because you can change it up. I was very surprised by the durability though. Bought the black only and test painted them. Lasted the whole season and some summer tourneys (when we could play!). So, I recommend trying it. Only residue I had removing the original black layer was in the threads.. but since it was being repainted, I didn’t stress too much. Thanks for watching! Hope this helps.

Would this work if I wanted to change color? For example if I have maroon on my pad could I cover that up with silver plastidip?
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 2 года назад
I believe so. Mine started all white, but on the blocker, the black was covered by the silver, so why not? Just be sure to take your time and make sure the coats are even. 👍🏻 Good luck!

would this work if i wanted to change the colour of my whole pad ? (white to black )
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 2 года назад
Probably. The only issue may lie in the fabric. I have not tried to cover the fabric, only the faux leather coverings. I don’t see any issues with it otherwise. Good luck!!

With plastidip have you ever changed a color? I'm looking to make a few Red stripes orange I doubt it will show thru but if it did I'd be pissed. I wonder if paint stripper would damage the pads and if that's even worth bothering with. It doesn't seem like paint or stain where the color beneath has to be white for it to look right
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge Год назад
I’m actually changing colors now. Just peel up the previous color and redo. But if you want to shoot over another color, then just mask and shoot. Make sure you take your time to let the paint build up without runs to allow the color to come through. I just painted blue on a silver weave on my glove. I’ll shoot a short showing the results.

@@goaliegeorge sweet man! Mine have original red stripes that I want to make orange. Have you ever done this on anything but white? I'm wondering if going orange over red is going to "bleed" thru and mess up the look

Thanks for uploading this GoalieGeorge! I have a set of CCMs that are white with red and blue stripes but I want to cover those so it's white and black only so I'll give this a go, I saw another comment below that its held up over a season so i just wanted to say thank you so much!

Glad to help. I’m actually repainting my pads now. Changing the silver to royal blue. That was a PITA to get off the thin edges from the stitching to the edges. The rest held up great, but new team colors and since I can, why not?? I forgot to shoot the removal and update on it today. oh well. I can attest to its durability.. enjoy!!

So far. But I’ve only used it on real ice. I’ve never used it on synthetic ice. And, I’m only just this past weekend noticing some wear on the edges of the application. So, it’s very durable in my opinion. Try it out on a small area and if it doesn’t hold up, then you’re out $4, but if it does what I’ve seen, then we’ve discovered the best way to customize stock pads!M. Thanks for watching. I hope this helps.

Great idea! Some Qs, please... 1. When dried, was it hard/plastic-like or soft/flexible with the stretches of the pad? 2. Though it lasted a season, did it ever crack, bubble or peel? 3. How easy was the paint to remove?
@goaliegeorge
@goaliegeorge 3 года назад
Sure! 1) Soft and flexible. It bends with the knee break when needed. 2) very light, but was at a corner that was not fully covered. Newest edition I show here has no visible wear. On normal week, I’m on the ice 2-3x week. Playing in top levels here. Never cracked. 3) I used my Xacto knife to lift off gently, then peeled right off. The strings will be a challenge. I scraped as mush as I could, but was going to repaint anyway, so didn’t push too hard on it. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Ask any follow up questions. Note: I did not use it on the nylon fabric as there it can get more embedded and therefore make it harder to remove.
