I made an updated version of this video for Blender 2.93
• Cut and key Blender 2.93
In this video I show you how to cut and key a model for 3D printing in Blender 2.8. I also show you a few changed I made to blender to made modeling for 3D printing easier.
Please like, subscribe and hit that bell if this video has helped you. I'm planning on doing more videos with Blender and 3D printing.

What a great video. You make a great case for the use of Blender (my favorite tool anyway). I learned some things that I had created workaround for. I think perhaps you could add, the use of a couple additional features. 1. Rather than saving a bunch of different files, duplicate the objects and store them in collections. When you go to export only the visible object gets exported. Also you could show how to lay out multiple objects in one STL file as you just make the parts you want to print visible at the time of exporting no matter which collection the object is in, while preserving all of your work in one file. 2. In preferences/Add-ons add the Mesh 3D-Print Toolbox. Great tool for fixing any mistakes you may have made before exporting to STL . 3. Touch briefly on face orientation, check box and also the hash marks. 4. displaying the edge dimensions. Okay I get it, you were showing only the Cut and Key concept. You did it so well, I subscribed to your channel and would look forward to more videos from you.

I am going to open up a Facebook group soon where I will share some projects for free. I’ve put this one aside for the moment. I have some major revamps to it to make it much cooler.

Thank you! I came here from your older version of the same video, so I appreciate the updated instructions. I saw that you mentioned to check for non-manifold areas - is there an easy way to correct it if you found any?

That zeppelin so cool, do you have some series about how to model something like this?

I do have some more modeling tutorials coming but I haven’t gotten up to something that complex yet. I’m working my way up to it.

Could you just use Difference then Intersect Bool rather than turning the box inside out? Are there any unseen issues with that?
@haroldd5035
@haroldd5035 3 года назад
That would work fine too. As long as you used the same method of saving a file with the “cutter” and then saving as with parts 1 and 2 after you did the Boolean operation. It’s just a different way to get the same results.

Aside from Blender's propensity to bog down on heavy poly scenes, it there any reason why boolean cuts won't/don't work with any shape or piece of geometry that one might try to cut out from the other? I've been working on a string of models trying to key figures, which by all account are probably too heavy for Blender, but doing boolean cuts flat out refuses to cut a key recess for me on my latest batch. I've also been breaking them up for easier printing after having a few 7" figure fails and despite trying for days now using every trick I can think of, I'm still stuck cutting geometry manually for fitment.

I find very little trouble while making cuts for keys or splitting a part with blender now-a-days. It’s not like the old 2.7 days. And I cut and key the heck out of my models. If you’re having trouble take a look at my video on fixing non manifold parts. I’ve found that if a Boolean won’t work it usually, not always, but usually means there’s a problem with your mesh. Check that it’s manifold (water tight) and that you have no doubles or extra vertices. If it’s not that try moving your cut a hair in one direction. You can also try flipping your key 180 degrees if they’re symmetrical. I don’t know why but that has helped sometimes.

@C-M-E 3 года назад
@@haroldd5035 Appreciate the ideas. That's one thing I really need to break the habit of is saving all my clean-up for the end when I do my manifold tests. By then I'm kicking around a thousand or so bad edges or a pool of doubles. Intersecting faces used to be my downfall but after fixing other people's crappy sketch-up models, I learned to better myself quick!
@haroldd5035
@haroldd5035 3 года назад
@@C-M-E it’s also a good idea to try and keep on top of your mesh because I’ve found that if the issues are too great sometimes when you hit the make manifold button Blender will delete parts or change your mesh rather than just fix the hole.

1:15 "Metric sucks" Really? I'm familiar with both systems, but I find metric more precise and easier to work with than imperial.
@haroldd5035
@haroldd5035 3 года назад
Considering that I say whatever right after that and, everything is in metric so its just easier if you get used to it. I’d hoped you’d see that I wasn’t offering a judgement. I was speaking to stubborn Americans who don’t want to switch to the metric system just because.

I don’t think the metric system sucks. I would think that should be obvious by everything I say after that. LOL
@frederickmarcotte727

Why don't you leave one part key, one part hollow so you don't have to make 3 pieces? Anything obvious I'm missing?
@haroldd5035
@haroldd5035 3 года назад
I don’t like supports. So if both parts have a flat side they can be printed face down without supports. If I left the key in one part I’d have to fully support one side of that part in order to be able to print it. This also saves plastic and printing time.
