$7 celery up here in middle of winter.. We grow and pick outer stems... It's still growing under plastic and we've had hard frosts already... It will be there in the spring if you leave the crown and it will flower and seed beautiful umbrella flower for butterfly and hover bees

Hi there, any idea why they didn't bolt when it was quite hot in there? Was it the constant watering?

very good video thank you. My first year growing celery, I have 4 celery plants they were in sun too much i am giving them shade at the end of the day and the stalks are getting bigger. Im going to do cut and come again im just waiting for the outer stalks to get thicker . How long do i have until i cut the outer stalks before the plant starts bolting?

I have been growing it the last two years and this year the insects really did a number on a large portion of them. First it was the black picnic bugs that would congregate down in the center of the plant chewing on the plant keeping it from growing new stalks and eventually killing the plant and didn't know it was a problem until it was time to harvest. The second was cucumber beetles chewing on the leaves and stalks. And third was slugs. It still is a great crop and around here everyone is so surprised we can grow it here in Iowa since most people are accustomed to having it shipped in from California. We also are able to have the added value of having the leaves on to show freshness and to have more uses.

Neat harvesting idea on the celery. I believe the term in English for the insect he's referring to is cinch bug or beetle.

Great video! Question - can you harvest and use the celery root at the end of the season? Or do you need to grow a different variety for celery root?
@wildrangeringreen
@wildrangeringreen Год назад
Celeriac is the name given for celery root. There are varieties that are developed for better root production, but they're not necessary. Celery is like beets in this respect; you get roots and greens from pretty much all varieties, but some are better for one use than another.

Hey Curtis! I am curious about blanching the celery? I have to add a barrier around mine to keep it from exposure too light. Are they using a self-blanching variety?

How do you prevent it from getting floppy after cutting it? I cut mine and within 2hrs it was floppy even with it being kept cool. Does that mean is lacking water? How so you keep your celery staying hard and crisp?
@offgridcurtisstone

if celery is not a problem with the bugs, why is it considered one of the dirty dozen and treated with so many different products?

Good question. Pests might be a problem when you have a 100 acre monoculture though.
