In order to cut plaid and stripe fabric with a pattern, there are (more than) a few helpful tips to make sure you are cutting it out like a pro! Setting out your pattern on the fabric can be a bit challenging with a plaid and stripe, but in this video I show you two simple options to make sure your plaid will match once you get your pieces to the sewing machine.

Thanks so much Faren! I have avoided plaids completely. Not a fear, just never learning how to line up with a pattern and assemble. This helps a ton.

This is so wonderful to hear... and I am happy I can share with you my knowledge!! I can honestly say I have also avoided plaids for years, but it is not so intimidating once you understand the basic principles. I think the best part of sewing is making mistakes and learning from them.

I have a question for pockets. Do you always cut them on the bias or should they match the plaids/ checks???

Hello, thanks for the tips. If possible can you give or show some tips how to pattern mach strips from the sleeves to the front and back body parts. There's always something going wrong and they don't line up beautifully or sometimes not at all, specially at the back part. I would be very grateful 🙏🙏🙏

Very helpful suggestions. I’m getting ready to make a skirt and I have chosen a plaid brushed cotton. One of the lay outs thats for 60”has the one skirt panel laid out four times and all on the selvage. The other lay out for 45” has one skirt panel cut twice on the selvage double thickness without the fold. Is one way any better for cutting out plaid fabric? Hope this makes sense. I’m really trying to do my homework on this skirt so I don’t jack it up. Instead of making it “Well it’s wearable”, what has become my motto, to making it “yah I made this and proud of it!” Which I can do if I take my time and think beforehand, a trait that doesn’t come easy…😅 thanks for the helpful videos! I enjoy watching them and learn a lot!

Hi Beth, I wish I could help you in answering this question, however, there is a little more to it than just picking the laying out for the width of fabric. Highly recommend watching the previous video (linked below) that explains more about plaids - you need to know if your plaid is an even or uneven plaid... does it have a direction? Do you recommend a certain tracing paper?

yes, most important is that your tracing paper is big enough (height and width) to fit the pattern pieces. It doesn't need to be anything special tho (or expensive from art supply stores)... you could even use tissue paper. I sometimes use/ recycle the tissue paper from gift wrapping or even a light weight packing paper from hardware stores works too. Get creative!!
