If only I knew how to do this when I knitted my Aran sweater and the body was too short. Because I had spun the wool, I was able to gently stretch the jumper the last time I washed it and it solved my problem. One is never too old to learn new techniques. THANK YOU

Sweater rescue indeed! I saved a moth-eaten cashmere by taking the lower sleeves out and reattaching the ribbed cuffs to a convincing 3/4 length. It was very fine gauge, store bought, and I used an embroidery needle with sewing thread instead of circular needles. I don't even knit, but after this successful trial I finally shortened the sleeves of a fair isle sweater I've had for over 20 years and rarely wore because of crazy orangutan sleeves. I couldn't shorten the sleeves from the top because the pattern matched across the sleeves and body. The double layers of yarn (probably some special name for this) made it more complicated but it still turned out looking totally great. I have to say I never expected to be able to do this myself and was plotting to find a knitting friend I could enlist to do it for me. Thanks a bunch!

You are so welcome GenieR and CONGRATULATIONS on being brave enough to try it yourself. My philosophy is always, "Well, it's not working as it is, the worst that can happen is it still won't work," if I cut it or take a screwdriver to a device that isn't working. And sometimes, as in this case, it works and it's wonderful!

What I did instead of grafting was to follow your instructions on putting a needle through a row of stitches, clip a stitch on the row below and unravel up to the needle. Then I just re-knitted the cuffs and used a grafting bind-off. It came out perfect!

When quarantine started I started knitting as something to keep me occupied. Every time I run out of yarn I just attach another ball. I’m on either the 11th or 12th, I don’t remember, and I just have a scarf that almost goes around the whole house. I think cutting it into smaller, usable, scarves is probably the best course of action. Thank you for the tutorial!

Wow! This is an amazing and fairly straightforward technique! I just finished an irregular triangle shawl pattern that looks really weird so I plan to use this technique to cut off one of the 3 points that is way too long. I will have to figure out how to finish the edge once I've cut off the long point. I might be able to just add an edge since the stitches on the long cable will be live. Thanks for this video!

I need to shorten up the sleeves and body of a cardigan but there is already a button band added vertically. I read in one of your comments to a viewer about undoing the seaming for the ribbing up to where I want to cut which helped so I can do that on sleeves and body but wasn't sure what to do with button band which was a pick up and knit button band. I cut a sweater years ago (30 years ago) and didn't remember how to do it so I REALLY appreciate your video instruction. Thank you.
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 4 года назад
Hi Robin. I can't visualize when you're describing well enough to answer. When you say the band was added "vertically" I pictured it knit as you went along, but you actually picked it up and knit it . . . and knit it out horizontal to the width of the sweater? I think the easiest thing to do might be to rip out just the band and reknit it after you've shortened the body. Make sense?
@robine.levine9619
@robine.levine9619 4 года назад
@@CherylBrunetteTV Yes, you are correct, the band was picked up and then knit out horizonital. Sorry if my description was confusing. I was hoping there was an easier way as the band is continuous and goes all the way around the neck and down each side but alas! Thanks so much for responding.
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 4 года назад
@@robine.levine9619 It's hard to describe many knitting processes with language alone so don't be sorry. That's why video is so valuable. You could cut it and seam, a kind of variation on a steek, it but then it would make a ridge and just wouldn't be as nice. It's probably well worth it to take the whole thing out and redo it.

Hi! Cheryl, just come across your videos which are amazing. I am new to knitting and just do knit & purls and I am making a cardigan with raglan sleeves. I am having a problem with the sleeves that they keep turning out to long. I have knitted the sleeve once and then pulled it all back and decided to do the increase row every 10th row as opposed to every 12 row. It still hasn't made much difference and I really can't face starting the sleeve again for a 3rd time. Would the method you have shown work for me in shortening the sleeve 2". Also if I decided to start again how would I alter the pattern for keeping the right number of stitches without it getting too long? Kind regards :)
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 6 лет назад
No. Not the best solution. Set aside these bedeviling sleeves and go to howtoknitasweater.com. Sign up for the free class to make a baby sweater and, ideally, complete it. There is a "formula" in there that is the solution to this kind of problem. Altering the pattern is the best first solution. Stopping when you get to the length you want is another but that will probably make the sleeve wider than you want.

This is a great tutorial and your method is feels much 'safer' than the other video I watched. She just cut the yarn and unwove it for a while then picked up the stitches. Eek! I have a lace cowl that unintentionally became a double infinity cowl 😊 and I've been very unhappy with it since the twist wrecks the look of the lace. So I think I can make this work! I do have a question: What is that gorgeous cardigan you are wearing? Where can I get the pattern for that? Perhaps you've already answered this question some time in the past but I couldn't find it.

Greetings Cheryl! Thank you for the lovely and quite informative sweater resuce! I am knitting a beanie hat for my Dad and it is too large in width. Any suggestions on how to make the hat smaller?
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 9 лет назад
Victoria Charles Hi Victoria. Is the hat crown formed with decreases? If so I would just rip it out and start with the number of stitches you need to make it the right size. It's such a small piece that cutting and seaming it vertically would be more tedious than reknitting it and you would have a seam which would make it less comfortable.

I'm hoping this will work for a sweater I made years ago. I don't even have the pattern anymore as I think it was from a magazine, but as I recall the yoke and sleeves were worked as a horizontal piece with some cables etc. and then the body of the sweater was moss stitch. I don't know why, but the body has stretched out (like the yarn got tired or something) -- perhaps it's a trait of moss stitch on a fairly fine yarn. Anyway, I think I'd like to re-do the body part and what your show in this video is likely what I need to do. Now I need to summon up some bravery :)
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 3 года назад
I'm sending you woolly courage Mary. It's more likely that the fiber got "tired" than the moss stitch, though one never knows. Good luck. You're already not wearing it, right? The worst that can happen is that you still won't wear it. Meanwhile, you'll learn a lot. Consider it cheap tuition to a class.

Thanks for this video, Cheryl! I am knitting a pair of socks, self-patterning, where ball number 2 does not match up properly to ball number 1. Exasperated, I just went ahead and started the second sock at the wrong spot. Once I knit 3 or 4 inches of the cuff, I could see from sock 1 where I would have found the proper beginning. Now I've continued to the heel and will finish this sock but I will need to start the second sock again, and then graft the new part to the part I've done. Should I cut at the cast on row, or probably a couple of rows down? And then graft the live stitches to the stitches I'll put on a circular needle? Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks

mayagayam You are so welcome and thank you for watching and commenting. Fixing vertically is a lot like steeking and I will someday get to that. I hope you'll join my mailing list at cherylbrunette.com if you want to learn when new programs come out and want to influence my work.

Hello! Love this video. I have just knit a Shawl/wrap with sleeves in seed stitch for my daughter and it is way too long. I also discovered that the increases from the first sleeve don’t match the decreases going to the second sleeve. My question is, can I shorten this wrap from the beginning of the “first sleeve to seed stitch” and correct the increases before regrafting?

Hi D. This isn't enough information for me to give you advice. Which part is too long? How long are the sleeves supposed to be? How is it knit? (e.g. side to side, bottom to top, etc) Name of pattern? It's an unusual construction and I can't picture it from the info I have here. Sorry. You might email me at cb@cherylbrunette.com

Hello, do you have a video on this for ribbing? I need to reduce the length of my rib and don't know how I'd pick up the stitches for purl and knit

Your hilarious!! Laughter makes knitting (and everything) all the more fun. You saved my butt with this video so many times that it is saved in my favorites. I have a question though. I’m doing a Broken Rib stitch that I need to cut apart and put back together again. In other words, do a Humpy Dumpty. Is it possible to knit two separates together of that pattern? Thank you 😊

You just have to try it. It's theoretically possible to do this to any piece of knitting, but some patterns require a pretty sophisticated understanding of the pattern and how to follow it with a darning needle and length of yarn.

I did the original from a kit, but the design is in an out of print book and you should be able to find a copy: Designer Knitting / Hugh Ehrman Westminster Trading Corp, 1986-09. Hardcover. You probably won't be able to find the Rowan yarns anymore, but you can substitute.

Hi. You sound very professional in your knitting. Do you know what cord outside/inside is referring to in an action? It's relating to finishing off a cuff that has an V opening at the bottom.
@CherylBrunetteTV

I've not heard that term but try searching for "applied I-cord."

Have knitted a norwegian cardigan but it is a little tight so wondering if you can cut a vertical cut and to be able to have a sweater instead with buttons??

Yes. You can. Look up "steek" or "Steeking." This is a time-honored way to make a Norwegian or other stranded cardigan.

Would this work for a top down sweater if the ribbing at the collar is WAY too loose. I made a huge mistake and didnt catch it until I was done with the yoke. I should have dropped needle sizes to what the pattern called for (pattern called for a 6) but I not only DIDNTA drop it smaller than a 6, somehow I knitted the ribbing with a size 8! I need to drop it to at least a 6. Just the ribbing. Would this work the same way?

I can't see why not. When I worked at a yarn shop for 10 years I was known to cut off neck ribs, bottom ribs, and sleeve ribs and replaced them when they've worn out or were knit too small or too loose. Just make sure you thread all the stitches you want to keep on a long circular needle first.

I have a sweater that I need to lenghten but its already sewn up should I undo the sides and then cut to extend?
@CherylBrunetteTV
@CherylBrunetteTV 5 лет назад
Yes. Just the bottom ribbing (or whatever treatment you have there), and about an inch or so above it. Cut one or two rows above the ribbing to unravel, making sure you pick up the same row on both front and back. Knit upward as many rows as you need and graft the longer piece back on. Voila! Are you on my email list yet? You can sign up at cherylbrunette.com or howtoknitasweater.com

if you don't have small circular knitting needles, use pieces of strimmer wire with the ends melted with a flame to blunt them.

Great idea! I had to look up strimmer wire, by the way. :D

Hi Doug. I made this particular one on the BOND knitting machine. I adapted it from a Kaffe Fassett hand-knitting pattern. There was a lot of hand manipulation involved. The pattern is here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/feathers-4 The pattern was in 2 colorways and I made both in the 1980s, one for my dear friend who owned my local yarn shop and one for me. We would wear them out together sometimes to knitting events and wowed everyone. :D
