For two years the Sauber F1 Team mechanics have been using their downtime to slice a Formula One racing car lengthwise down the middle with the precision of true craftsmen. Chief Designer Matt Morris quite literally gets underneath the skin of the F1 car, pointing out where and how the individual components are located within the chassis. Everything is packed in pretty tightly. Sergio Pérez is also on hand to demonstrate the driver's seating position.

It took our mechanics (a big thank you to everyone involved!!!) more than two years to finish it because they only worked on it in their spare time (which is very scarce anyway). They took every single piece, cut it in half, finished it and re-assembled everything into what we believe is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship. Thanks for the hints re: saws and laser cutting. Try cutting through the titanium, reinforced steel and carbon parts of an F1 gearbox... Successful? Give us a call ;-)

@Marcus Dutton . . . Yeah! I was disappointed not to get a close view of the drivetrain. Some YT comments here have speculated the lack of video closeups could have been due to Sauber wanting to keep some engineering secrets. But, I contend that considering Sauber has always been an _also-ran_ in F1 racing, their competitors had better engineered technology than what Sauber used; so Sauber had nothing to hide.

Seems from reading Sauber replies that they weren't allowed many close-ups, only on certain parts of the car.

Thank you, Dan! Glad you like the video. True, we couldn't show too much of the powertrain. But these are components that we don't make ourselves and we don't hold the intellectual property... It is a 2008 engine - which is basically still the same spec as the engines used today. The car is a BMW Sauber F1.08.

No, Geoffrey. The seat is very thin and light. It's sole purpose is to hold the driver in place (together with the seat belts). It's connected to the chassis by 4 small screws/bolts.

Yeah, we know... We would have loved that, too. Some IP issues on the rear, unfortunately. But we're very thankful for getting the thumbs-up to at least give an overview of all components.

Basically: A lot of dedication. You have to earn your merits up all the way through 'lower' racing series, be successful there and get the attention of one of the teams. Secondly: big balls... ;-) It's not the speed that's 'scary', it's the late and very powerful braking that requires a lot of courage.

What amazes me about science is that it's so easy. The difficulty is when you go "I wouldn't have thought of that." Sauber F1 Team Do you think you could do a video on how much drivers understand about the science? For me, I just drive and feel what I feel and try to communicate that to mechanics and they talk about stuff I don't fully understand but eventually get to the solution. Is it different for an driver who will have spent their lives racing and understand a bit more about how different components affect the car?

Sorry, no french version... But we added English, German, Spanish and Japanese captions (subtitles). You might try the automatic caption translation offered by RU-vid (use English as a basis). Does that work for you?

There is basically no space to adjust the seat. The pedals may be adjusted, but only marginally. Another tip: look for our Cutaway F1 Car photo albums on our Facebook and/or Google+ pages.
