err dats naive...these animals are living in an artificial environment where there are no constraints to resources, space and no external threats. There is of course no reason to fight one another in such environment. Reality is different: We face constraints. Find me such group of animals in the wild.

Spotted hyenas can do that, but other types of hyenas can't. I'm pretty sure this one is striped (or brown). Their ears are pointy instead of round.

The quarrels between Lions and Hyenas stems more so from their social behaviors. Hyenas live in clans. Lions live in Prides. If neither were social, they probably would never fight.

The interesting dynamic between the two only gets enhanced by the difference in the average success rates of the species. Hyenas have far more successful hunts on average than lions despite lions being much more powerful animals, this leads to hyenas thriving and lions KOSing them whenever possible to increase their food supply.

Honestly i have always doubted that theory. There is more than enough prey to go around, and always has been. I think there is much more to it than just eliminating competition, especially when you consider scavenging is common among both species. The more predators around taking down prey, the more opportunity to scavenge a free meal.
