+superdau If you actually try it yoursel (not that I went cutting paper around the house...) the obvious way works. Just turning the paperin the "hinge" away from the hand and do some unfolding you reach the second state.

+Marko Kostic Well, this conception of geometry is very hard, first because you are "changing" the function of a plan or a figure, to a different state. When you change it, you can do different things which the first one couldn't do it. Imagine this thing but now with the universe.... yeah, insane. Math is really amazing.

For a Christmas special, I think the numberphile gang needs to challenge the periodic videos crew to a few pub tricks. I would suggest the sixty symbols posse as well, but they'd just get all theoretical.

I love this guys sense of fashion, he looks like he's straight out of the late 70s or early 80s, and just got done working on some engineering for the Roland TR-808... Now I wanna listen to some Yellow Magic Orchestra!

This trick is also illustrated in a famous Japanese detective comic which called "Kindaichi Case Files" where this trick is applied to a carpet to create a alibi.

+mintyfresh9080 Meh, painting isn't entirely out of place in these paper strip topology videos. You'll frequently hear someone say something along the lines of "paint one side color x and the other side color y."

It makes sense - if you can get the top flap as stretchy matterial to go up and around and over the body to get it to go underneath, like using rubber, you can also go the other way, behind the paper - yeah, its not obvious how to fold the paper at first, but upon seeing it once, you instantly see why it works. we've all been pratting around with things like rubber bands doing stuff like this all through school, and didn't even realise you was doing it i bet - explaining it on paper is not something im learned enough to do though xD

You can actually do this without bringing the circles near to eachother. Just push the far right corner of the paper through the right circle, and simultaneously the far left corner through the left corner. It will flip and rotate more or less automatically to the other state.
