CUTEST FOAL EVER - Oak Grove Frank the Clydesdale Foal

Me playing with my 2 week old Clydesdale colt foal, Frank...
Now, to all the people who think I was teaching the foal to rear on me: I wasn't. I was, one day, showing my foal to some friends and when he saw me come into the shed he was excited and jumped up on me. I caught him, instinctively, and my friends took a photo, and it was fun and we laughed. So, they suggested I make a video of it, just for fun, and I did. It happened during one video, and one video only. When the video ended, he was never allowed to do it again. I would block him with my arm on his nose and step to the side. He tried it twice, or maybe three times after the video was made, and then he forgot all about it.
PS: thank you everyone for the kind and positive comments. For a long time I managed to reply to everyone, but, to be honest, I am now not able to keep up with them all. Thank you all once again and I am glad that you have enjoyed seeing my horses.

TheRealBambihooves yes but horses should not be kept as pets they are extremely violent and they can even kill people
@SilentHonor2012
@SilentHonor2012 7 лет назад
Extremely violent? Do you see the bond this foal already has with his caretaker? It's wonderful! And do you notice how calm momma is while her baby is being played with and is being taught that human hands lifting their hooves, legs, etc. by the caretaker is okay and nothing to be afraid of? This man knows his horses and is teaching them nothing but love and play. Violence in a domesticated animal, such as these horses, is something that is learned through trauma or abuse.........it's not an absolute given. A Chihuahua can kill a person.......but we keep them as pets......although I prefer to not use the word "pet". "Companions" is a more appropriate term for relationships like these. Beautiful video!

Oak Grove Clydesdale Horses I bet I imagine because horses are horses that it's not nearly as easy as you make it look but heavy horses do have a sort of natural gentleness about them don't they? is the mare a shire by the way? she looks very different to the clydesdale at the back whom she wasn't very happy staring at her baby XD
@tadhgpheaitwillie
@tadhgpheaitwillie 8 лет назад
Aw, thanks again. Well, to be fair, I am no enigma or anything special with horses. Frank just had that really affectionate personality about him. And to be honest, all my Clydesdales do, and Clydesdales and draught horses in general very much tend to also. Nope, the mare is a pedigree Clydesdale. She has really unusual colouring. Many of them have a lot of white through their coat in splashes, etc., but Kate has a lot of white all over! And the 2yo at the back is a Black Clydesdale, which in itself is rare enough to see :)

I love the bond between this guy and the foal, even the mare respects him enough to allow him to frolic with her foal and run like mad around her feet but listen to him enough to wait until he moves so she can barrel in on the intruder on the other side of the fence. I love it.

I so want to have another foal in my life again! Still have my last one, he's 14 years old now. I so miss playing with a cuddling a foal! Last one was a pony, we left the door open one day, he came in and hopped up on my bed and layed down next too me. Momma came inside to look after him, we cuddled a bit before mamma left a present on the floor, and I put them both back outside. :)

I know this is an old video but I couldn't help but to comment anyways. I was brought up on a farm here in Scandinavia and we had heavy thoroughbreds as well as a couple of ponies for us kids. Overtime I see these majestic clydesdales its reminds me of my childhood with my grandfather who treated his horses a bit like his dogs. He bonded deeply with them and they each were like 1 tonne weight of puppies. They were so calm, sturdy and beautiful of mind that I never ever feared these gentle giants and today, where Im a vet of profession, I still take advice about horses from these special people who choose these kinds of special gentle giants as their horses of choice. Its like you just know what kind of person someone is if they own a thoroughbred. There's a certain kind of understanding of the nature of horses and how to be around them. I love how these horses are not chained or in tiny stalls and that they had access to interact with the other horse and free view over the entire area. And the mare seems to think her person had become a kindergarten teacher for her baby and she just let you play around.

I love how mamma is very protective of her foal... Was it the stallion she charged?... I like your approach, playing and bonding with the foal without separating it from its mother... I only have one question. Why aren't the mother and the foal outside with the herd?...
@tadhgpheaitwillie
@tadhgpheaitwillie 7 лет назад
Thank you for your comment. No no, she charged a three-year-old filly, just laying down the law not to mess with her foal. The mare and foal were inside simply to feed them and give the foal some handling. They lived in the field for 23 hours of the day, and came in every day for handling and to get the foal used to feed (in the event that if ever his mother died unexpectedly, he would be better able to feed for himself).
@faerieSAALE

anyone who knows anything about horses is this, A MARE with her FOUL is not to be trifled with. Mama had better know you, or sense that you are no threat - or she'll charge with the intent to scare you off or seriously do damage to you! They don't like being watched and stared at either. Makes them nervous.

@tadhgpheaitwillie 8 лет назад
+Xodus Yovsky Haha - it wasn't as technical as that. The little bugger just followed me everywhere! I just could never get away from him! Nah, I've no gift - it's the nature and gentleness of the Clydesdale breed. They are an amazing animal to work with.
@Happyascanbe1
@Happyascanbe1 8 лет назад
With all due respect to the Clydesdale breed, I know enough about horses to notice that you are being modest here. If the little bugger was approached by some ordinary folks, I bet he wouldn't be that trusting. You have a gift + modesty, which is a rare package. Most people are exactly opposite - ordinary and bragging about it. ;)

Thanks very much mate. Well, most draft foals and horses are very friendly and kind in nature. I really do spend a lot of time with my foals when they are born and they seem to accept me as one of their own. I will admit that this foal was particularly friendly (the most friendly I have seen), but all of mine have been very tactile and warm with me. They just know that they are safe and love to be handled and scratched.

I'm so glad you explained about the rearing. That worried me. I raised my mare's foal, and found out accidentally that because his dam was an alpha mare, but was trained to always follow me on lead, he accepted that I was the ultimate alpha and therefore gave me no trouble at all learning to walk on lead. I started paying attention to horse body language after that and it made handling them much easier if I could talk to them in their language. I was told my mare was 18 when I bought her but after I bred her the previous owner started adding up the foals she had birthed and realized she was actually 25. Scooter was a big foal but she was used to them, but he got in the wrong position and I wound up having to pull him out. He never read books on horse handling and training so everything I read and had learned about horses meant nothing to him. He gave me many hours of laughter and fun while training and handling him, having to improvise all the time.

Teaching a foal to rear and put his front legs on a human is extremely dangerous. They are not dogs, if this horse does this when it weighs 1400 pounds, it could kill someone. I think this is extremely dangerous and irresponsible.
@oldgloryhillfarmturtlewoma9132
He isn't teaching him to rear up and put his hooves on him; he is taking his legs and pushing back to show him his proper place is in front of him not on him. At one point you can see the colt hesitate already. Pretty smart for one so young. It won't take him long to get the picture and he'll be proud of himself for pleasing his friend. That is training done with gentleness and love; he'll always remember it.

That is the greatest way to get your horse to love and trust you, by playing with them, plus mom trusts you so she is not sending out any signals to the baby. Defenetly does not like the black horse near the baby

That was absolutely beautiful and amazing. You are a true professional and it shows how much respect and love you have for these animals. I found it very interesting to see that mum did’t really worry too much about you playing with her foal, although she kept a close eye out. But she hated what I thought would have been dad even looking at her foal. Can you tell me why she is so overprotective with him please?
@tadhgpheaitwillie
@tadhgpheaitwillie 5 лет назад
Thank you for your kind comments. Ah, the black horse is not the father of the foal. She is a 3yo filly, actually. The mother of the foal (Kate) is protective of her foal with all other horses, but she doesn't bother with me as she knows that I will not "take" him or harm him. I genuinely believe that she understands that I have only his best interests at heart. She happily allows me to administer medication to him, or even be strong with him when he is being haltered for the first time, etc. She knows that all the things I do are in the best interest of the foal, I think.

And she gets it every day of her life. What you see here, if you do not realise for yourself, is a short clip filmed specifically about the foal. You know nothing of the specific attention and care that the mare gets for the other 23 hours and 53 minutes of the day, 365 days a year. But thanks for watching all the same.

Can I not be given the benefit of the doubt that, surely, for her to so respectfully and patiently allow me to interact with her foal (especially given the reaction she has to the other horse), that she gets treated well by me? Why else would she have such confidence in me when I play with her foal? Can this not be implied from what can be seen, rather than for me to have to prove myself to people who know nothing ab out me or my horses?

Thank you for the explanation of what you were doing and why. I was baffled as to why someone who so obviously knows what he's doing around horses would teach that to a foal who will (no, HAS) grow(n) into a BIG horse to jump on a person, but now I understand. I'm thrilled by your knowledge and joy with these beauties. 🐎
