A word of warning if you're wanting to cut or re-purpose a foam mattress (for pet or otherwise). Almost every foam mattress on the market has a fire retardant sock that goes around the foam and is under the primary cover that typically has a zipper. It sort of looks like cheesecloth but is a knitted fabric. These "socks" are most often blended with fiberglass or a derivative of fiberglass they mask with a fancy name. If you're not careful, you can end up with a fiberglass disaster in your house. Unless the manufacturer specifically states it uses a natural fire retardant like wool, expect to have the fiberglass or a blend of the sort on the mattress. There may be the case where a chemical is used inside the foam to achieve the same thing instead of the sock. I have looked at some of the popular mattresses that come in a box and they all had this type of cover that emits small bits of fiberglass. I've also recently looked at a mattress in a box store that costs just under $2,000. It appears to have the same sort of material in the sock as the other cheaper ones. Small fine fiberglass hairs. With that being said, her mattress doesn't appear to have the inner sock or the cover that unzips as she cut it off with a scissor. I'd like to know the brand of this mattress and if it's still manufactured this way as most of the readily available mattresses you order and receive in a box contain fiberglass. Apparently some those that are in the store and of higher quality NOT packaged in the box have the similar stuff around them too.

I guess that probably shows how weird my mind is...but then again, I too am about to embark on a mattress dissection journey, in order to save a perfectly good mattress from the dump and save myself several hundred dollars; so maybe I'm in a better place to understand.

Years ago, I borrowed a friend's blender to try making paper pulp and I broke it... 😬So now I'm scared about that, haha! Instead of borrowing this time, I asked around to find a home for it before I even bought it. After I clean the foam off of it, my friend will be getting a new knife.
@@Lefie I know it's been 4 years, but I wish you had kept the knife, just in case, God forbid, of a home invasion--imagine if the monster was greeted, not by a gun but by the sound of your electric knife ready for cutting off parts he really didn't deserve anymore...

I used one of those utility knives that you snap little sections off the blade once it gets dull. It worked well fully extended to cut my bed down. Your new compact mattress looks like it would fit nicely into the back of a van, speaking from experience. Enjoying your videos. Thanks!

cool! I remember how we cut a (kinda thin) coir mattress with a simple metal knife, using it as a saw. it worked, but in the end we didn't know what to do with the small cut off part.
