Lick Test Certified - We met up with Cody's Lab and he brought a HUGE 17 Carat diamond to see if we could cut it! Thanks so much to Cody's Lab for coming down and providing the diamond. If you haven't seen his channel check him out now. bit.ly/CodysLabYT --- Not convinced It's a real diamond -- • Is this Rock a Diamond? -- Also lick test certified...
We filmed two other videos that day, so make sure you're subscribed to both of our channels to get notified when they are released.

Mitchell Guessed it couldn't cut the diamond and Dan was confident that it would. Find out who was right.
What should we cut next? Look through all our videos in this playlist to see if we already cut it… bit.ly/WJvideos
We do a lot more than just waterjet cutting! Do you have an interesting idea for a video?! Let us know in the comments. It could involve a hydraulic press, a waterjet, welding, machining creating something, destroying something… let your imagination go wild. I want to hear some really crazy ideas! Seriously though, we haven’t gotten any really crazy suggestions yet.

I wonder if a gem-quality diamond would hold up better since it would be aligned for maximal strength whereas this looks significantly more random.
@JustJove
@JustJove 6 лет назад
Gem-quality would actually be easier to cut because of the cleavage lines. That's why diamonds used in industrial drills are are the same type as the one seen here.
@EnkiduShamesh
@EnkiduShamesh 6 лет назад
wouldn't that depend on how you oriented the diamond for cutting? Like if you have it lined up right it would cut like butter, but turn it the other way and it should be more difficult. I'm honestly surprised how quickly it cut through it (I've cut diamonds on a wheel and how you orient the stone in the dob is the difference between cutting quickly and scorching the stone from friction without actually cutting it at all) I'm also wondering if the impurities in this stone weakened the structure. More thoughts: diamond is hard but also highly brittle. The water jet isn't scratching it or grinding it down like a diamond dust embedded lapidary wheel - the jet is hammering the stone with water molecules. You can shatter a diamond with an ordinary hammer that would fail to scratch the surface when rubbed against it.
@theartoftech
@theartoftech 6 лет назад
Yes, poly crystalline diamonds are actually 'tougher' than single or twinned crystals. They have interlocking structures that resist wear better than non-PCD. So, there is hardness (Like Mohs), brittleness and toughness. PCD is much tougher. Like comparing nephrite to materials with a similar Mohs hardness: Nephrite has interlocking strands and it resists wear and grinding a lot better than 6-6.5 stone with no interlocking structure.
@KevinSmith-qi5yn
@KevinSmith-qi5yn 6 лет назад
I know that if you don't cut a diamond properly it can be impossible to polish. Orientation is key. They use lasers to cut diamonds now. Leaves a lot less waste and works by changing the crystal structure to graphite.

Industrial diamond
@justinhackstadt6677
@justinhackstadt6677 2 года назад
That is what the jewelery industry calls an unrefined industrial diamond stone. If that truly is what they say it is even. Those stones cannot be carat diamonds because they are filled with impurities. So cutting it is far easier than cutting a true carat diamond.

Hardest commercially available material is likely CBN, Cubic Boron Nitride. Can be sourced as cutting inserts for lathes. Material however is not 100% pure, uses a small percentage of sintering aid, commonly cobalt or various ceramics. Cutting inserts of poly-crystalline diamond also exist. My MS in materials science is primarily focused on industrial ceramics, I have some bits and bobs of some B4C and B4C/TiB2 composites produced via SPS which, though not nearly as hard, are quite tough. PM if interested.

Nice. Came here from the link at Cody's. I actually have some boron nitride, but it's the wrong kind. Just like carbon crystallizes in several allotropics with very different properties (diamond vs. graphite), boron nitride also crystallizes in different ways. The hexagonal boron nitride I have is a very soft, white dust. It's so soft that its main use is as an anti-friction agent. The one you're looking for is the tertagonal boron nitride, which is analogous to diamond, and which is very hard. I don't know of a source of large crystals of that.

It does not look like a single diamond crystal, but a concretion of multiple crystals, together with silicate impurities. That would explain the low density and the grainy appearance. The water jet cuts through the silicate crystals, passing between the diamond crystals. That's why the cut was so fast.
