When I was little I did the same thing to an old t12 fluorescent tube and I connected a P-trap under our kitchen sink and I had a vertical piece of clear glass going from wall hub to the trap and I could see water flowing trough it lol. The t12 tube has almost perfect size for that purpose

Here is an improved way of cutting with the wire by making a wire holder: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DBbTJqoNPUo.html

I don't know if it leaves micro scratches, but table salt removes that white stuff if you shake it around in it.

How thick is the glass I have another use for it.

Hey this is clever, and now I know what I can do with all the old tubes in my dad's house. I came in from an unrelated video on your channel, and wow you have an eclectic mix of topics on here. Have you made progress on your laser?
@BlueMoonshine

I actually built a CO2 laser a few years ago, but eventually the tube cracked (maybe because the glue that I used was too rigid and did not allow expansion due to temperature increase). I haven't had time yet to rebuild it.

I was watching the entire video wondering how the glass did not shatter. I am used to flouro tubes being extremely fragile and rice paper thin.

The white stuff inside the fluorescent tube is phosphorus.
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine Год назад
That's right. But I wonder how different it is from "white phosphorous" which is supposed to self ignite in the presence of air? No such a thing happens when we break a fluorescent tube.
@2StrokeDriptroit
@2StrokeDriptroit 2 месяца назад
It is calked a PHOSPHOR, not phosphorus, which is a totally different substance. It is a fluorescent PHOSPHOR. Hope this helps. 😋

My understanding is that besides the toxicity of the mercury gas, the "white powder" which is phosphor is also toxic and should not be touched or inhaled. You are doing this without a mask and without gloves. It seems very hazardous to me. Are you aware of the danger that these tubes represent?
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 2 года назад
Yes, I am aware. We have to be reasonable and realize that most of the gas came out (I was outside) when I broke the tip with the pliers. I'm not doing this job everyday on 10000 tubes. Everyday, someone accidentally break one of these tubes when installing them or replacing them. And yet, it doesn't affect their health in any way. I'm not talking about people who work in a fluorescent tube factory.
@isguillemin470
@isguillemin470 2 года назад
I am not only speaking about the mercury, as you explained that before. I'm speaking about the white powder which is phosphor also impregnated with the mercury gas. People need to know that phosphor is toxic, even more with some mercury in it. Children will watch your video and will handle tubes with their bate hands when they just shouldn't touch them at all! They need to know this. If anyone cut themselves with this glass powder and have phosphor impregnated with mercury in this cut, are you aware that it can get really dangerous?
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 2 года назад
@@isguillemin470 Your statement about phosphor is a myth. The phosphor contained in fluorescent bulb is chemically engineered and is not considered to be toxic. Of course, you don't want to use phosphor as a daily powder for make up, but it is not a big deal if you get a cut. Just wash thoroughly the cut, disinfect, and you'll be fine.
@platinumsky845
@platinumsky845 Год назад
@@isguillemin470 the Mercury impregnation in the phosphor mix is the only reason to consider it potentially hazardous under regular handling practices.

Safety Sallies are ruining the world. Mind your own business. He is obviously qualified to do whatever he chooses. HIS BODY HIS CHOICE. And before you say it - anyone attempting to do whatever they see in a video without investigating potential hazards should be removed from the gene pool. Here take your safety badge and go back to Mom's basement.
