Saturday, July 13, we cut the sudangrass in our lower field in the southwest corner of our property. Because of the length and moisture of the grass, it was too wet to rake or even bale the next day. We ended up baling and wrapping it on Monday, July 15. We hope you enjoy this video! Thanks for watching!

You sound young and smart, like you are dealing in the real world. It gives me hope for the future when I see hard-working, smart young people like you actually doing something productive.

Well filmed/videoed . As a person born and raised on a farm many years ago now it was interesting to see how things have changed, but stayed the same !

Only problem with a discbine cutting in soft ground if you have rocks you have problems, seam to always find one that the packer didn't push down when cutting sorghum!

I just watched a other video where the sudangrass was at lease 6 feet tall or more
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm 3 года назад
Yes, if you let it go it will get that tall quickly, but then the feed value begins to decline. Chopping a crop that tall for silage is workable, but that is way too tall for bales. Also, letting it get that tall before cutting will usually hamper its ability to regrow quickly.

Does it regrow after this cutting?
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm 3 года назад
Yes. Typically we get four cuttings before frost. We plant as soon as soil temps hit 60 degrees and the crop will last to the first frost.

@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Is it perennial or annual?
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Год назад
@@locybapsi174 it is annual. We try to plant it first or second week in June. First cut is usually 4 weeks later and then we continue to harvest until frost kills it. Usually 2nd or 3rd week in October.

@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Thank you for your quick reply! Wow, that's impressive. Four cuttings from June to October. I suppose it does remove a lot of nutrients from the soil.

Sudangrass is an annual.
@scottdunlap2626

Why are they wrapped in plastic?
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm
@KeithFinkFamilyFarm 2 года назад
They are wrapped to seal out oxygen in order to facilitate them fermentation process. They were baled at 65% moisture. The fermentation process preserves the crop. Basically a baled silage.

Based on the species that it is, you're cutting it early as it is only about half grown from the looks of it.

Dustin if you plant it with corn it will get just as tall as the silage corn or taller, it will compete with the corn for sun light!
