If you just cut all of the way through the metal past the hasp the lock will come right off without having to even cut the hasp super easy he made this A LOT HARDER
I had a similar situation now, 6 years later. I decided it was cheaper and easier and a LOT faster to just cut the latch. Replacement for the latch is going to be about $5 and the lock is $18. It took about 30 seconds to cut the latch. Each situation is a little different, but your video made it easy for me to choose which item to cut. Thanks!
I made this just to show cutting that style lock can be done with a dremel. On a shed definitely easier to take the latch off or cut it. I cut these locks several times a month on storage units. Damaging the latch isn’t an option. I use a 20v angle grinder though
@@russej02 Mine was on a cargo shipping container and I went ahead and discussed it with the owner before proceeding. This was my first and hopefully last. :) Your rec of the angle grinder was spot on!
love to see how the dewalt angle grinder works on this. my unit along with 10 other just got hit. It looks with the right tools it wouldn't take long to open all 10 units.
Well, I don't think you can take those off with a screwdriver, but that's also just a less helpful video. My last storage unit had two bolts that you could remove with a wrench and two that had round domes that you wouldn't be able to get any purchase on with a wrench or a screwdriver. I assume most storage places don't have hasps you can just remove with a screwdriver.
Arthur Trella nope, best bet is to go with a storage unit indoors or that has great security. Locks keep an honest person out, almost all locks can be cut or picked in about a minutes time
Watch the Lock Picking Lawyer and you will find out there are no locks that can’t be defeated. The difference is defeated by who and how long it takes. Stay away from locks at the big box stores. Military type padlocks for ammunition are in the most secure type he has shown.
Hey thanks so much for this. I was lost on how to get mine off thinking I needed to cut the hasp itself. Never occurred to me to cut into the body. Again, Thanks.
Yes this was very helpful. I have arthritis. Watching your strong young male hands struggle with it....I knew I will need an angle grinder. Hope I can handle one. Love your generosity. Ppl missed that. ❤❤❤
I haven't read the comments, someone else might have thought of this, but wouldn't it be easier to unscrew the deadbolt, slide the lock off, screw the deadbolt back on?
Will this work with the Disc lock "Defence brand"? psycho roommate stole my keys at storage unit and I'm desperate to get my Stuff in storage that is left from all she has stolen
yep. I'll cut any of them. problem is there usually isnt anywhere to plug into so you need a battery operated one and probably two batteries and a few cut off wheels
"If you miss and knick their stuff they'll charge you for it." All those sparks will burn the paint and cause rust. Not all latches are they same but mine bend easy, another cost.
Anthony Thorp yep. I pick them whenever I can. When that isn’t an option I use a 4 and half inch cut off wheel on an angle grinder. I just wants to show people it can be done with a dremel
@@russej02...Jesus,folks are just such problem solvers. Americans are so assuming that they know something before they even collect all the information. That's why our government will always suck...people don't think.
Nah.....Vise Grips. The correct tool always makes the job easier. Be prepared and carry extra wheels,a special wrench for changing wheels if you break one,Needle nose pliers, a chisel and a hammer. Better to have it and not need it....etc.
I prefer channel lock pliers. If I need to adjust the grip or angle of the tool, or the lock in relation to the storage unit hasp, it is much easier to do with channel locks than with vise grips, where I have to unclamp it, adjust, then reclamp it to continue cutting, notwithstanding that the lock will also get extremely hot. I also cut from both sides. I normally cut about 3 of these off each month, since they have very small keyways, are sometimes installed backwards, so yhey don't always pick easily. Also, a dust mask is a must.
I know this is not valid given the video is Dremel instructions. Having said that if there is an easier visible option for access to this specific space; I feel like it should be mentioned . To get past this specific lock... Ignore the pad lock and cutting tool, simple flat head screwdriver with some elbow grease would romve the brace retaining the bolt on the door (left side)
This comment cracks me up every time someone leaves it. The point of the video is cutting the lock with a tool someone might have not me getting into my shed.
Every circular disc lot can be picked under 10 secs flat using paperclip I've a collection of 60 such lock of all brands price range WTF was that all about lol
You do know there are screws that are accessible On the outside of your lock Mechanism or latch that you could just unscrew it just saying I mean I know you’re just demonstrating how to cut a lock but I was just thought I’d point out that you can just unscrew the screws and get into your storage or your shed or whatever that is because they’re on the outside not the inside. And you could just simply use the screwdriver or a wrench and unscrew those screws.
I was trying to show that a dremel can cut one of these locks. I wasn’t actually lock out of my shed. I should of just put the lock in a vise but then I’m sure I’d get comments about that too.
@@russej02 My lock was faced the other way(keyhole on the left) and I cut into it right where you said and it took not 30 seconds to fall off. I used my Dewalt cordless grinder and I taped aluminum foil to the door so I didn't burn anything. ha.
Storage operator here...Anybody who breaks a key off can just use the access pinhole on the back of the lock to push a straightened paperclip thru...this pushes out the broke part of the key. You guys been crackin me up for years haha.
@@russej02 you know what..... I watched it again..... Nothing makes sense, the door is damaged, took an hour... Go to home depot but grinder and save time. Thanks
What do you have baby kittens locked inside that goddamned thing???? Yes I suggest that you got this lock off and you feed those little cats or what ever is going down there . Are you that inept or you just having a little bit of unexpected Unsmoothness??? Plus I'm becoming concerned about those crying cats.
@@russej02 Sir it was supposed to be laughable , cause the background noise is similar . I guess we got carried away with it . Sorry. It was a good joint we smoked earlier Ha. Adios mate , no worries .
