Cutting Down an Old FIr

This old tree is at a local golf course. Due to several large limbs falling onto the course and other safety concerns we cut it down, leaving a 50' habitat snag.
The golf course that the tree was on required a habitat snag left of at least 10 meters, otherwise it would have changed the layout of the fairway, making the hole easier. Also the only corridor to fall the tree into would have required felling (and cleaning up) a half dozen other 160' firs, meaning climbing and piecing it down was the faster option. The climb only took about 5.5 hours.

We had the best arborist's ever in the military. 100' of DET cord. Done in an instant. Except they had no idea where it would go when it fell. No honestly that was awesome climbing. Anyone that's climbed a tree knows that lugging a big saw around isn't easy plus the trunk diameter was huge. Great work man.

I will tell you one bit of very important advice. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CLIMBING LINE IS ON THE BACKSIDE OF A TREE WHEN YOU ARE FREE FELLING LIMBS OR SECTIONS!!!!! the first piece of large limb that you cut rode down along your climbing line which should have been on the backside away from any possibility if it getting snagged by falling limbs. Secondly that strap that you put above you in hopes that it would keep the tree from splitting if it was to would not do much on a tree that size, the strap would simply be stretched right through it's braking point. 4 or 5 good wraps with a new 3/4" bull rope would be a much better method of protection against splitting. I will commend you for a good climb and you got done what needed to be done but please make sure that your ground crew knows and understands how important it is to not only keep your climbing line clear but also out of the path of any falling material, if you do not heed this warning you may some day be in for a nasty yank and maybe even pulled right out of a tree by a falling log getting badly snagged into your line which is attached to the side of your harness. I not only make sure that my lines are clear from falling wood but also have a weak link on my harness which would certainly give way before pulling me down but it's best not to have snags hit your lines if they are connected to you. Good luck bro and stay safe!. Marti tree climber

yes you are absolutely correct.... ive been climbing very big trees for 30 years..... I DO NOT EVER HAVE MY CLIMB LINE ATTATCHED TO MY BODY when cutting huge limbs and for sure tops and big chunks,,,,,a old timer told me many years ago to never have your climb line connected to your body..... i just saw a utube video of one of my favorite climbers almost ripped out of a tree in tasmania when he cut a big 14 ft. log from up in the tree, sent it up the hill, and the log rolled down the hill grabbed his climb line dangling on the ground down the hill.... and then the video stopped so i dont know what happened to the poor guy.... WE NEVER WANT TO LEARN THE HARD WAY OR THE STUPID WAY., BEACAUSE IT COULD BE OUR LAST LESSON......!! we should always listen to the very experienced climbers advice ...... peace out......roy...... mendo

Geez why all the hostility all of a sudden. Ive been climbing since 1989. I would not want to do a tree this size. Especially piecing it out in sections like that. That is serious hard work. Idk why Mike and Ben are so agro. But whoever did this tree deserves respect. Even among seasoned exp. tree climbers theres only a small percentage of them that would and COULD do a job like this and among those an even smaller percentage would do a tree like this more then once in a lifetime. Impressive

Hi Cerey. Looks like he chose to top it out in the region of the scarring because there was a 'platform' there to cut the gob, the small amount of deadwood you can see him stepping on. As good a place as any? Assuming there is rot- the rot would be why the top had broken out, so the higher he went on this tree the more rot? Got to cut somewhere yes? BTY- looks like more of a tear out wound than lightning? V. Big tree- the guys look like they did a damn good job- clean cuts there with a big saw. Regarding the big shot- maybe they aren't used to spiking big trees like that? There's a real skill to spiking up big wood- As I'm sure you know. Just not many of us have had the chance to work on big wood like that. Nice to chat with you!!!! Good luck and good climbing!!!!

Also when we shoot a line up into a tree we do not do just one. We set a line that is used as a back up same as a climbing line and then we set a 5/8" line which is actually used to pull the climber right up the tree either with a power winch or simply attaching it to a truck and scooting forward very slowly as the climber is pulled up and tightens up the climbing line for safety.

it hard as hell yes, especially fliping your line around that big of a trunk. I had to put 2 flip lines together when I did it and like that tree, there was a branch for at least 75 feet. We didn't have a sling shot so I had to climb up to about 100 ft. where it was still 6 ft around and take a 40 - 50 ft top. Then I came down to about 50 ft and shot another log, then we put a pie in the bottom big enough for myself and 2 other guys to sit in while we took a picture. I'm no idiot.

Some days you just want to do it the hard way. I rarely get that much room to drop a tree whole, just scrub woods around, get permission. No more damage than dropping chunks. And where is the ground man holding the rope out of the way when the branches are free fell? Nothing like getting a whip knot to snag the limb on the way down, very embarrassing, if not dangerous for the climber.

I have been climbing and removing giant fir's and Reds over houses, for over thirty years; (sometimes all through the night during storms while they were cracking/ and/or 'uprooting over a house), my question is "why did you top it where the 'lightning strike scar was (where the tree would be rotten inside)? In addition, did you chain-binder below and above the cut"
