I love the blow torch idea. That was very clever. I had purchased some larger for my pot pure lead pig weights a while back and it was not the smartest idea, but I used a heavy sledge hammer and splitting axe wedge to chop it up. I remember feeling after like I worked out for a week. Must have been 100 hard strikes to get through everything I needed. Next time, IF I ever get those big bars, I will most definitely use your method instead. Happy Monday my friend.

The question is how to cut a lead slab? Its a keel from a sail boat 3.5 thick 2ft wide by 16ft long. Keep hearing people say chainsaw.

I have a similar situation. Recently got a 4"x4" lead post that is about 3 feet long. Going to check out the options on how to cut it best.

I'm always out for free material. Most of what I cast is Range recovery. It's a good idea to have pure lead around for alloying material for projectiles that do not require much hardness. Full wad cutters don't need much hardness, in fact, you can ruin their performance by making them too hard, I cut 1/2 range recovery to 1/2 pure lead. That will make a good slow target bullet that expands and seals in the barrel for full rifling contact down the barrel. Good casting to you dude. Dave.

Amen Dave! And it's funny you should mention wadcutters, I just got a bunch of new double ended wadcutter molds. Gonna have to try them out.

Nice haul of lead. Ask me about the naval yard ballast lead auction next time your in the store. Maybe we could go in together on it if you want a huge 3 lifetimes supply of lead. I'm tried of asking at tire shops for WW's

FortuneCookie45LC I've not gotten into shotshell casting or reloading yet. I keep thinking I should, but I don't end up shooting my shotguns as much as my pistols and rifles. Maybe I should shoot more shotguns. What would a good shotshell press be? MEC jr?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 7 лет назад
FLT - You're doing a great job on that channel of yours already...Factory Foster slugs shoot 2 MOA from our smoothbores. And with sabots, they shoot even better. However, our reload slugs using wads that were never designed for slugs are only good for 6 - 8 MOA at best. or reliable 4-6" groups at 50 yards. But I'm looking at some latest offerings... This level of accuracy with our reloads is not what you are used to...or what good shooters like yourself deserve to have. But for short range shooting out to 35 yards or so, I'd say go for it... By the way, if you would like to do some informal, relaxed videos called Shooter's Coffee Chats where you can ramble a bit without a structured video...Thors Axe777 and I are doing some of those... We just sit down with a cup of joe as the viewer also does for about an 8 minute video or less... Best to ya, FC

I will watch a few of your cup-o-joe videos and see how you are doing them. Sounds fun.

FLT - Sorry didn't answer all your comment... The MECjr is a fine press (you will need more capacity though if you ever go into competition shotgunning) for most shootres - versatile also because you can load most slug loads without any problem. But watch out - pretty soon, you're liable to be like Taofledermaus who has shot everything from doorknobs to socket wrenches out of his 12 gauge..!! Have a great day, FC

Where do you find all the lead?

Various sources, boat weights, old fishing weights, old sheeting from x-ray rooms, dental x-ray foils, scrap from stained glass windows, etc...

What do you recommend I use to cut some long large pieces of lead with? I need to cut them into pieces that will fit into my Dutch oven, like you have (of course, I will not use the duct have oven for food). Thanks.

@@jonathanl2748 I'd probably cut with a saw. Put a plastic sheet underneath to catch the shavings and then use a saw to cut it, then take the shavings and throw them into the pot too.

Each section has a raised CS with a funny looking flower between the 2 letters,on the bottom its stamped 90/10B. Any clue ? Ive looked everywhere but havent gound anything similar, thanks

I think it was just plain lead. Maybe from boat weights that were melted down. I don't think the "B" means anything. It is very soft lead.

@@FullLeadTaco I think this was plumbers lead. Cast iron pipe had flanges that were filled with a rope like material called Okum. Melted lead was poured on top of the Okum to seal the joint. Also, just curious-are you in Utah? I noticed in another video that you mentioned the "DI" where you bought a spoon that you drilled holes in for skimming dross off of the lead. And in your store you had a page for "West Desert Shooting". I'm in W. Jordan, so if you are, Hello!
