Cutting, Round Baling, and Wrapping Hay/Spraying Corn/In-Depth Look at New Holland 853 Round Baler

We're dodging rain showers to get our next field of hay baled and wrapped. Alan uses the 820 John Deere and New Holland 489 Haybine to cut. The hay got raked and was ready to be rolled up with the New Holland 853 Round Baler behind the International 1256. Lastly, the hay needs to be wrapped up. To do that, we use an Anderson RB 200 Individual Bale Wrapper. The Case 830 spins the bales while plastic gets layered on each bale to seal them and allow them to ferment. Wrapping hay like this is a great way to preserve hay to keep it from molding, heating, and burning. While we were busy with the hay, Alan's Dad sprayed our oats for weeds. We had the arrival of a very special Brown Swiss calf. Before we end the video, we answer some viewer questions about wrapping round bales and take an in-depth look at our New Holland 853 Round Baler.

We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. I really enjoyed the walk through on the baler. It brought back memories. First baler I baled with was my Grandpa's 853. It was one of the last ones made. He had the choice when he bought it new of either an 853 or a New Holland belt baler. He had an earlier 853 he traded in. The earlier one had a narrow pick up that did not have augers on it. The newer one had the same pick up as yours. The baler was identical in set up as yours. It had hydraulic tie with 2 Shear bolts as well. We replaced the chain once and the airbags as well. The bars seemed to bend easier the older it got. We would straighten them in the press. We went through a lot of used oil. We used all of ours up and got used oil from neighbors as well. Biggest complaint I had was I had to bale some virgin land that had been cleared off. It was about a 40 acre field and that first couple years I pulled my hair out with sticks breaking shear bolts. It would have been so much nicer baling with a belt baler at that time. I loved baling with it though other than that. When my Grandpa bought a new 688 New Holland the salesman wanted to know what I had been running and I said a 853 chain baler and he said you're spoiled. They were easy to run and you didn't have to be as fussy about weaving the tractor side to side as a belt baler. Another weak spot was the bale kicker springs either coming unhooked or breaking. Thanks again for going over the baler it was a great video!

Excellent work! Fabulous tutorial on the baler and wrapping. I couldn't agree more on more wrap always being better than less. I've been wrapping bales for 20 years now and can remember back to the beginning days when I did not use enough at times (or when I purchased a specific brand of wrap that did not have enough glue...) and suffered significant loss of beautiful feed due to air infiltration resulting in widespread mold. Can make a fella cry, and probably did.... Isn't it awesome how older equipment that has paid for itself over and over again just keeps getting the job done? Keep up the good work!

18 turns. I'm putting 22 and think it should be more. At 18 you can see the hay and netwrap through the film

You are definitely not using too much wrap, I saw where Evan on Country View Acres bought a new wrapping machine and his was preset at 22 revolutions from the manufacturer. If you are only going 18 you're not using enough. But you know your machine and hay better than anyone else, so if 18 does the trick, that's all it takes. Great video.

I like my dad's belt baler. You lose more leaves with a chain baler. We just have our PO Box now. The IRS and their $600 rule would require us to somehow prove any money we received was a monetary gift and not payment for something. It was too much hassle.

Howdy Alan, Family, I hope ya'll are doing well, That vine weed you mentioned, that you weren't sure what it is, it could be ( morning glory ) if it is, it can definitely be a pain in the neck, it will plug headers, especially if you have a lot it, it is a really pain when there's a lot of morning glory, never fun having to constantly stop to unplug your header lol Not a fan of chain balers, they produce a very rough looking bale in my opinion, I admit I've never run one myself, I've only run belt balers, but I've seen enough chain balers, and I'm just not a fan, Great video Guys, Thank you Alan for explaining what you do and why, when your baling, Stay safe, God Bless and Farm on my Friends

That roller is a twisted steel drum covered in rubber and if your not careful, hit rocks or fence poles, it will crack and then come apart. I have welded them back up by removing some of the rubber by the crack and welding it together. Some of the older ones had like a channel that went all the way across the drum. That channel kind of held the drum together.
