CVA Wolf, accuracy with Powerbelts

After only shooting sabots and .429 handgun bullets I figure out that my CVA Wolf shoots the best with Powerbelts. Sometimes you got to find what bullet combination works the best out of your gun, in this case the difference was dramatic.

Thank you for the good video Sir! I agree. I've used 245 and 295 hollow point Powerbelts in 3 different rifles. They are accurate and expand well. After that, it's the Indian, not the arrow. So I take neck and shoulder shots which makes them just fall over instead of run. I'm old and lazy. I don't like tracking and dragging deer around.

I have a newer cva wolf, I use 150gr pellets with the same belted bullet. It’s a stake driver at 80yd. I will say that the recoil is absolutely ridiculous with the magnum charge, but I have definitely noticed an increase in accuracy with the 150gr charge.

I can tell you what helped money even more. Get some bore butter and get a thin layer around the powerbelt. This helped me tremendously

Pretty sure Powerbelt says NOT to use bore butter on their bullets because it actually Hurts accuracy. I like my bore butter too, I may try it in my Hunterbolt Magnum and just see for myself.

I got the same exact gun just black and i use the white hot pellets with a 245 hollow point with a 3x9x40 golden antler scope and back in 2020 i shot a buck and a doe at about 40 yards buck was hit in spine didn't move of course doe was lungs all the way through she did a 180 and didn't move and also got a buck at about 200 to 250 couldn't really tell but he was out there don't know where he was hit exactly i think lower neck near chest he dropped and didn't move so from my experience with my first gun ive ever bought its a damn good gun and will shoot close and far with no problem

Wish you'd been shooting the 295's, I've got fifty of those coming today. From the ones I've shot they don't just depend on the plastic skirt to seal to the riffling. The ones I've dug up had Good deep riffling on the bullet itself. They are very soft lead and swell up under pressure. You'll find a lot of videos of people knocking them because they expand TO good and don't fully penetrate a deer, thus very little or no blood trail. You'll also find that the same people are pushing them to hard with 150 grain powder charges. Stick with 100 grain powder charges or shoot deer a lot farther away and they'll work fine. Accuracy is number one. No deer has ever died from being missed by a poorly placed shot, a lot have been lost behind poorly placed shots though that didn't hit them in the kill zone.

I shot a deer with a 295 I’m pretty sure it was the same bullet(it was a buddies gun), and it blew up the front shoulder and didn’t penetrate well but I blame that on myself if it was a couple inches back it would have dropped em. But he couldn’t go far after he got hit with it.
@ditchdigger93
@ditchdigger93 2 года назад
@@bigjuicy2493 They shouldn't blow up on a deer's shoulder anyway. There isn't much to a deer's shoulder to destroy a bullet. It's a compromise I guess, if they make them harder it would most likely affect accuracy, which they are, there is no denying that but if they were harder they would certainly penetrate better. Using the soft lead they do what I don't understand is why they don't make a solid? As soft as they are they would certainly expand I'd think. Expansion doesn't do much good if it doesn't penetrate deep enough. I'll take penetration over expansion every time if it's put up to a choice.
@bigjuicy2493
@bigjuicy2493 2 года назад
@@ditchdigger93 I hit the deer right where the leg bone meets the shoulder bone so it didn’t penetrate well I’m gonna try the hornady 295s I forget the name but they’re the saboted ones. Those worked great on my cousins deer this year better than the power belts so if they shoot out of my gun good then ill definetly use those

I have an older wolf, about the same results. With sabots, mine is only happy with really tight sabots. I like the bullet options with sabots but the power belts seem more accurate. I test new bullets any time i get a chance hoping to find a really good expanding bullet that it will be accurate with. Currently working with a Barnes copper SPTF Boat tail 285 gr. that seems promising with 100 grains.

Just watched your video for a second time. Caught where you said you used 90 grains of loose powder. Should work great on deer sized critters. Looks like they are shooting fine for you to me. Only thing I'd do now is shoot a group at 100 and see where they group. You might want to shoot an inch or two high at fifty if it makes you an inch or two low at 100? I can group about four inches with mine, so far, at 75 yards with Open sights. But I just got it. haven't shot it very much at all yet. I'm shooting two Pyrodex pellets. 100 grains because that's what I have or can get in my area. Shooting ten Powerbelt's the other day sighting it in the last one loaded as easy as the first one did. I like that about them and the Pyrodex anyway so far. I've got a lot of loose powder but have not tried that in it yet.

I used 295 and 245 grain powerbelts for a long time. No complaints. I've started using .45 cal 250 grain Speer Deep Curls, and 250 Grain XTP's with Crushrib sabots. They are just as accurate, but a LOT cheaper. I have high hopes for how they will perform on deer. I'm using the same CVA Wolf as in the video. $248 at Walmart with mount and 3-9x32 Konus scope. My Wolf has a tight bore, so a lot of things load really hard. PowerBelts and black .45 cal Crush Rib sabots load easy.

@@joepangit6938 does your wolf have a spot in the barrel where it gets hard to keep pushing then gets easy again about 4 inches from the bottom? Is that a design feature like I’m supposed to stop there because the first time I went shooting I pushed it to there but that didn’t seem far enough down so i kept pushing at it got easy and seated on the pellets, it just seems way harder than my buddies cva to go down to the bottom I don’t think his is a wolf though.

@@bigjuicy2493 No, mine is about the same all the way down. Does yours have a crud ring built up? When it is like that, run a couple spit patches down it, then look to see if it has a ring of gunk at the bottom.

No mention of what sabots your using? Sabots are known for basically being the most accurate MZ bullet there is but you gotta have quality. With any MZ if it’s shoot bullets terribly the thing to do is try different powder charges. The load/ bullet combo is critical. CVAs are known for being stupid accurate with high quality sabots. Get some Hornady ssts or monoflexs. Mine shoots 1/2 moA EASY at 200yards 250grain monoflex 115gn ( by volume) blackhorn 209. And make sure your using real 209 primers- not the once’s that’s day muzzleloder on them. Deer meat for dinner has a video of shooting 350 yards with that exact gun and those bullets.

There was not really much of a need to adjust it. Anything close enough to that would still kill a deer? It might not go down in 2 seconds, but it will go down within a couple minutes.
