If you listen closely, you can hear Dirty Rhodes begging the mighty Assassin to quit hurting him. He can also be heard asking the ref to stop the match and award the Assasin his worthy belt.
I wish he would have made it to the WWE in the early -mid 80's. When I seen him in WPB Auditoriom against Dusty Rhodes I was scared shitless of him as a middle schooler.
When I was a child growing up in the orphanage, it always brought such joy to the hearts of us children when the Assassin would come to visit us. He would bring us candy, toys and read us books. He was a fine Christian athlete. One day we children were watching TV in the orphanage TV room and we saw this video. We saw Dusty Rhodes breaking the rules and attacking the referee. That was the day we children learned that Dusty Rhodes was a rule breaker. On the Assassin's next visit, we asked him why Dusty did these things. Being a man of integrity, the Assassin explained that Dusty Rhodes was a coward and a liar. In our hearts, we knew the Assassin was telling us the truth. Thank goodness we had someone like the Assassin we could look up to as a role model.
Amen the Assassin the real American Dream not that filthy Dusty Rhodes. The Assassin was a favorite of the Reverend Billy Graham who advised the Assassin on how to be a great Christian Athlete.Definitely the uncrowned Champion.
Are you being serious about this stuff? Or are you just pulling our leg? If it is true, then I'd have to have more respect for The Assassin, then for "The American Dream".
I remember this ! It was a fantastic angle! In fact at one point the World's Championship should have been dropped to Jody Hamilton. There is no question that in the early 80's he was at his best !
On June 21, 1981 in Atlanta GA Dusty Rhodes scored a controversial victory over Harley Race to steal the NWA World Heavyweight Title for the second time. This began 88 day title reign which saw Rhodes do anything and everything underhanded and unsportsman-like to illegally retain the title. Dusty Rhodes faced the Assassin on August 11, 1981 when the Assassin defeated Dusty Rhodes by DQ. I believe this footage is from August 12, 1981 in Miami when the Assassin defeated Dusty Rhodes by DQ. On the next night in Jacksonville Dusty Rhodes and the Assassin fought to a Double DQ. Do you notice a pattern here? That's right Dusty Rhodes got himself disqualified over and over again to retain the title. And the corrupt CWF and NWA protected their "champion." It should be noted that the NWA and GCW waived the DQ rule for the June 21, 1981 match in Atlanta where Rhodes won the title. But as soon as Rhodes stole the title the DQ rule was put back in place. On August 16, 1981 Rhodes ran away from the Assassin and the match ended in a double count out. Rhodes kept on running all the way out of Florida. It wasn't until the end of August that Rhodes worked up the courage to return to Florida. Surviving footage of a contract signing shows the so called champion too drunk to sit in a chair and sign a contract. The Assassin was disgusted by Rhodes and demanded that the filming cease. By the way, the Assassin never cheated. He never used a "foreign object." He used a piece of safety equipment that was mandated by the CWF and the NWA.
This is one of probably several times where ya gotta give the Devil...I mean Assassin, his due! These two hated each other's guts, and you're right concerning Dusty Rhodes. At least twice in his career, when he was beaten, or felt cheated, or whatever, he'd all of a sudden put on a mask, and pretend to be the "Midnight Rider", and he was supposedly a "Fan Favorite" both times! Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Jerry "The King" Lawler, and who knows who else, seemingly had the distinction of being protected by their respective "Higher ups". It was pathetic!!!
@@ronaldshank7589 Rhodes worked under the mask as Mr.Ichiban (facepaint actually not a mask, but the same idea, in CWF), Uvaldes Slim (in CWF and GCW) and as The Midnight Rider (also in CWF and for Jim Crockett Promotions). The Midnight Rider gimmick drew big money for Eddie Graham, but it was a box office bust for Crockett. Two masked men (were they the original Uvadles Slim and The Midnight Rider?) tried to get an autograph from Rhodes during a Florida Championship Title Match between Ernie Ladd and Dusty Rhodes on July 16, 1977, but had no bearing on the outcome of the match as Ladd scored a no-controversy-middle-of-the-ring-pinfall for the victory and the NWA Florida Championship.
I have issues with your description of the 6/21/81 title change. Having seen the tape the no dq rule didn't affect the result. in fact Rhodes even observed the top rope rule when executing a bodypress when he wouldn't have beed dq'd for having both feet on the top rope. His victory over Race in 79 in FL however...
The Assassin was the uncrowned champion. Dirty Rhodes was a coward, a cheat, and a thief. No wonder the Assassin had so much animosity towards Rhodes. A fine Christian man like the Assassin can only take so much.
I liked the Assassin in my young nwa wrestling days. Mr 2 was my favorite. But you look at the Assassin close up boy he definitely needed thst mask 😅...
It's too bad kayfabe was important during the 1980's because "I beat Bundy's Five Count and even met the boxing standing EIGHT COUNT!" would have been money.
He was a great worker and great villain. His book-'Assassin the man behind the mask was sensational.Great guy in real life-and the things that happened to him -WOW! ...TONY
Assassin's got a point here. I mean, Dusty bonked into the referee and that idiot referee should have seen it coming and moved out of the way! That was a clear cut clean pin to win the title! Assassin was screwed by another stupid Dusty Finish~!
The Assassins...if Stalin constructed a tag team. It would be them, serial double talkers : u r intimidating the these fans etc. but these pro Assassin comments r comedy gems.
The Assassin would have had to unmask if he had won the world title. NWA rules state that a masked wrestler cannot hold the title. I doubt he would have unmasked knowing how proud he was of his mask and wanting to conceil his identity. He had 12+ title shots against Rhodes. If he was the superior wrestler that he claimed to be, he would have figured out a way to defeat Rhodes for the title. He should have called Ric Flair for some advise. The Assassin apparently devoted the next 3 or 4 years to growing a 200 pound stomach that surpassed Dusty's belly by about 150 pounds.
The original two Assassins Tom Renesto and Jody Hamilton were the greatest tag team ever. I don’t care if it was a work. The only thing I have against Jody is he continuously claims he was Assassin # 1 when at least in Georgia from 1968-1972 and beyond Tom was referred to as Assassin # 1 and Jody Assassin # 2. Even after Tom unmask the ring announcer would refer to Tom as the former Assassin #1. Jody was referred to as Assassin #2 through the middle of 1975.
@@A_real_Ha_So Yeah, thank Sam Muchnick for that. It wouldn't be until 2006 that the first masked World Champion was crowned. And that World champion was Abyss.
I believe that they started wresting together sometime around December 1961 in Atlanta. But correct about Renesto being #1, and being called #1 by Ed Capral after his retirement. It was only after All South Wresting (Anne Gunkel's promotion) went out of business that Jody Hamilton finally began being referred to by something other than Assassin #2.
He was on GCW when took his mask off, said his name was Tom Renesto, and announced his retirement. If I'm not mistaken, for a couple of years he worked behind the scenes in the legendary Memphis promotion.
Does anybody know who the 1st real Executioner was that started in the 60's, he fought along Andre the Giant and Hacksaw Jim Duggan? What was his name?
