We had a sago that looked just like your last one with no fronds on it. Well, it sat dormant like that for 9 years. Our fellow gardener friends were laughing at us because we kept taking care of it and they said it was dead.. to give it up. My husband thought like you did, that it would start throwing fronds. In year 10 .. it started living again and now in year 15 it is about 3 feet tall and has the darkest rich green fronds that look like a painting. It is BEAUTIFUL .. thick .. My friends can't believe it .. but it is absolutely gorgeous. So keep taking care of it .. It will surprise you and the beauty will be breath taking!!

Thank you for watching my video and especially for taking the time to share your story. I love that story and hope to share a video someday when and if mine awakens! I feel like the truck changes shape over time so something is happening!!! Glad your husband stuck to it and that makes that sago even more special. Take care, Burke

The sago in our front yard was overrun with pups. Some on the ground, some growing halfway out the main sago. Finally got a chance to remove them. probably removed like 20ish pups from the one Sago. There was a whole eco system inbetween the pups and the main, ranging from frogs, lizards, ants, and spiders.

I'm fairly familiar with these plants, as we have them growing all over town here in Lake Charles, LA, not far from the Gulf of Mexico (40 miles), so we have mild winters here. We may have a light freeze (28-32 degrees) here less than 4-5 times per season. I love these little plants! They kind of remind me of a miniature Canary Island date palm. They thrive here in our subtropical sun.

Hey Clinton, I am wondering if you are talking about last years fronds or if there is yellowing on the newest set of fronds? Make sure they do not get too much water, let the ground dry before watering again. If they are last years fronds then clip them off. Hope that helps, Burke

How often does a sago palm have pups? Mine had pups about 3 years ago and I'm hoping it would have more soon, but hasn't produced any yet. Otherwise, it's doing very well. Any suggestions on how to get new pups to grow? Thanks
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 3 года назад
Thanks for the question. I find that pups occur when they want, where they want and how often they want. The pups most common start from underground and work their way to the surface slowly as they grow. Sometimes they will grow from the trunk of the plant above surface. The older the cycad, the more frequently the pups seem to appear. I hope that helps!

Hello, I just planted some big sago’s like the ones you have. How often should they be watered and how much? Why do some of them start to turn yellow/brown on the fronds? Thanks for your time
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 3 года назад
Thank you for the question. It really depends a lot on the type of soil you have. Our soil is mostly packed clay and being in Southern California it is mostly warm temperatures. I water once a week unless it is really hot and then I will add another watering in. I like to give the soil just enough time to dry out before watering. If you are planted in better and softer soil then your your watering will be a little different than mine. Thank you for watching.

I have a very large sago palm that has 3 large trunks all of the same size. 2 trunks are positioned such that the leaves don't overlap very much.. The third trunk is positioned so that the new leaves grow in the midst of the leaves of the other trunk. This 3rd problem trunk is now getting new leaves. My question is, should I remove leaves from the trunk that is blocking the new growth of the 3rd trunk? Or, should I cut off all the new growth in the third trunk to stop the 3rd trunk from growing at all. I don't know what kind of damage that might do. Any advice appreciated.
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 3 месяца назад
Thank you for watching. I am familiar with this dilemma. You should consider cutting off all the fronds from trunk three before they grow out. This will not hurt the plant. Some years cut the fronds from another trunk. The trunks will keep growing even though you have cut the fronds early. Let me know how it goes!! See you on another video Thanks again, Burke

My sago has pups that have grown into full grown dogs. They start from below ground level. I've dug down around them but can't break them off, I don't want to kill the main tree. Is there any trick to getting bigger ones off the main tree?
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for watching. You have already done the hard part by digging around the pups. Don’t worry about killing the main plant… you won’t. For pups like you are describing I actually first try a shovel for leverage and pry it away from the main… wedge the shovel as close to the trunk as possible and power through it. The main plant has so many roots that it will be fine if you chop some off. Important: once you have removed the pup, let the “scar” dry for a few days before covering with dirt again. Let me know how you do! Burke

@@burkefranklin1 I got one of the larges off, I've got 3 more to go. It didn't really snap off like the smaller ones as much as chopped off with the shovel. Update : I got the rest of them off, just the main tree left standing. Is there any way to stop more pups from growing? I guess I'd like to neuter my tree! LOL

Please explain why there are branches that get yellow or yellowing little dots on all the branches?
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 2 года назад
First off thanks for watching and the question. Yellowing fronds can be from too much water. There are other factors as well like (did you fertilize?). The spots…. Check the underside of the fronds… there could be scale or bugs. They will be easy to see because they will be directly order the spots.

Hello. I have a sago that must be over 50 years old. It has split and have 2 tops growing from one trunk. The pups pop out all year long and I am constantly digging them out. My question is how do I get the palm to stop growing pups? I do not like the pups. I like my palm to have a clean trunk. It is such a pain to have to continue digging them out. Any suggestions?
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 Год назад
Hey Sandra, I understand your pain! Unfortunately these palms are true survivors and do everything possible for the plant to survive and populate. Sounds like a very happy Sago but all you can do is keep plucking away at those pups!!! Thanks for the good question. Burke

Why does the larger sago quit producing fronds on the top even though producing pups around the ground area?
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 2 года назад
My experience is that the top fronds will come out first and shortly after or at same time the pups get theirs. The younger sagos don’t always follow that pattern and sometimes will not produce new fronds on the pups. Thanks for watching and check out my newest sago makeover if you get a chance👍 Burke

@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 8 месяцев назад
Hi Tanya, congrats on the split trunk. Personally, I like the split after about 5 years. Trim it how you like. Some years I will trim the fronds off the second head and just grow one out… other times, I let both grow but thin on side out much more. It’s like a haircut, just experiment!! @burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 3 года назад
Hi Kate, this is about the time of year that new growth will come out (if it hasn't already). If the old growth has turned brown then I would trim those off for starters at your soonest chance. I like to do my trimming as the new growth almost finished opening up but I vary that on occassion. Is the sago healthy? Thanks for the question. Burke

@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 Год назад
Hi Sandy, so many things can affect these Sagos. I am not sure but I think we had some extreme heat and they actually burned from the sun. Once that happens they will not green up again until the next set of fronds come out. Could happen from poor soil nutrients and even too much water. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope to hear from you again on another video. 👍 Burke

I do not understand. Can you please ask your question a little different. It sounds like you get two sets of fronds each year but then 2 years ago you only started getting one set a year. @burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 11 месяцев назад
I don’t see any regular amount of time to form a pup. A younger plant may get them once in a while but the mature plants seem to just have a constant flow of pups, usually starting below ground level. They grow relatively quickly on larger plants. Thanks for the question! Burke

Which season is best to remove pups?
@burkefranklin1
@burkefranklin1 7 месяцев назад
Hello Giliam, good question… you can remove pups during any season, but I prefer any time of year where the soil gets the chance to dry out. Most pups originate below the soil level and when you remove them, it is best to let the place of attachment dry for a couple days before covering back up. I have removed pups during all 12 months and never had a problem (California). Thanks for watching and the question. Burke
