In this episode, we cycle from El Chalten to Lago del Desierto.
The route follows for 40Km along the Fitz Roy mountain and some other incredibly beautiful mountains. The road is bumpy, busy and depending on the weather very dusty, but these are the things you have to go through to get to Lago del Desierto, where you have to take a ferry to cross the lake, or be brave and walk around with your bike (make sure the weather conditions are great!) We paid 50$ for a 30-minute ferry ride, which is insanely expensive, but the weather was too bad so we couldn't walk around the lake with our bikes. After the first lake crossing is the Argentinean immigration where you have to get your stamp to leave the country via a trail through the forest to get to the other side where the Chilean immigration is. Once there you have to take another ferry from Candelario Mancilla to Villa O'Higgins where the Carretera Austral starts or for most people ends.
