The Tour de France didn't allow gears untill 1937, 34 years after the first systems appeared. Maybe it's time to cut loose with another "tradition", and just have a second event, a bike brawl, where the cyclists get protective gear and lances, and whoever impales the most spectators wins

The same was the case for Group B Rally. The difference being that in WRC the spectators are at risk, in cycling it's the opposite, so the spectators simply don't care because it's not their careers they're risking.

That lady caused almost the entire peloton to crash and injured several people through her blatant disregard for everyone's safety. And rather than initially owning up to what she did, she left the scene and evaded police until the media coverage was too great she knew she'd be identified sooner or later. Punishment? 1,200 €. Barely a slap on the wrist. Absolutely sickening.

It won’t stop until people are punished severely, financially and personally. The problem individuals aren’t fans they are narcissists. The flares are another issue, the riders are moving huge volumes of air, having to breath that crap isn’t helping. Great video BTW.

Human stupidity and idiocy will always be something that I'll not only ever refuse to understand but fathom as to how much of it is in some people.

The public is oblivious but the Tour de France organizers are incredible. When they do stages in Belgium (where I worked at national level for 3 stages), Spain, Holland, they have drastic requirements, safety meetings and still check the road 3 times the day before ; not a place without a flagger, policeman or a barrier. And in France, nothing, people on the shoulders, in the ditches and in the middle of the road. For spectacular actions?

I'm primarily a motorsports fan, but I occasionally watch cycling races with my mom (who is a big fan). I get the same feeling from watching some of these crowds than I get from seeing rally spectators stand in the middle of an active stage track, and disperse at the last second before cars zoom past them at 100mph. They're just asking for a disaster to occur.

These "Fans" make me so angry.. imagine training all your life just to have everything ruined by a fat, drunk spectator...

Especially in the Tour mountain stages this pisses me off so much. People just can't behave and just has to run along, hold out flags or wave right infront of riders. It only takes one person extending too much or not getting back in time and a whole Tour de France championship can change hands

Problem is, you can put barriers down, like the Paris Roubaix, the problem is they are too close to the road and people leaning over are then interfering. Barriers should always be a half meter back from the roadway.

I’m not into road cycling, but I’ve done a lot of very extraneous athletic stuff and I will tell you when you’re that tired and that worn out and you’re pushing yourself that hard. It’s hard to keep your cool with people like that if I was one of those cyclists I would lose my cool I’ll be like for real just let me race smh

I've ran my first Marathon this year and watching Tour de France with my father as a child is core memory for me so imagining people disturbing you after so many hours of relentless effort I would totally freak out! Great video, thank you!!

I totally agree , I am a freelance pro photographer and I am disgusted with the complete lack of respect the so called “fans” demonstrate. I have to “get the picture “ or I don’t get paid and I would never consider doing what the “fans” repeatedly do .

This is about making INDIVIDUALS accountable for their actions, whether intended or not. NOTHING will change until individuals encumbering a racing event face the same penalties as other situations such as wreckless driving, pushing old ladies down out of anger, endangering children, endangering animals, etc. etc. etc. This issue exists because we have people & legal systems unwilling to prosecute INDIVIDUALS for selfish, disrespectful, flagrant, dangerous behavior. Accountability, people. Start demanding it! We’re TOO LARGE of a world society to accept anything less.

The tour has to be one of the most beautiful venues of racing.

The trend now is how people behave anywhere, we’ve become such a selfish and self centred society that people can’t behave anywhere. Go to a theatre and no matter how many times a plea goes out for phones to be turned off or for no photos to be taken, some cockheads will do what they want anyway. This attitude pervades everything and everywhere.

Been watching for decades, and only very recently that they have banned spectators altogether from the tight high elevation assent portions of the race. It is now a lot more enjoyable to watch.

Looks like there is no difference between doing a cycle race and cycling to work every day. Danger lurks on every corner.

Very informative and frightening at the same time.

Spectators and officials are an important part of any sport, but the line has to be drawn short of their being able to affect outcomes. Race organizers and sanctioning bodies must be held accountable when fans are allowed to encroach and officials or media act in a way that affects the race. That will fix the problem. They'll either provide tighter control or they'll just stop organizing races.

7:05 that hurt..If you've fell off a bike at speed onto pavement it feels like you're ready to die. I've been in multiple car accidents in my life and they don't hurt as bad.

Even I, a commuting cyclist would always say that: "A small mistake or issue on the bike could lead to my death or someone else's harm". If those "Fans" know how vulnerable a cyclist is, they would not do this shenanigan.

Road cycling should probably learn a lesson or two from WRC rally, which has had issues of it's own with the spectators. The difference is, that in rally lack of crowd control has lead to numerous spectators losing their lives. Barriers cannot be put everywhere, but posts and plastic lines can be put in quite a few locations, as they are cheap, fast and easy to install. Effective route clearing is needed - something similar to how law enforcement might clear a path for a motorcade (lead vehicles far ahead, bikes etc. here and there to keep the spectators out). Publishing maps of prohibited and designated spectator areas might help too. Reckless spectators need to be taken seriously. If everything else fails, officials must have the framework and guts to suspend or cancel a race if spectators are too reckless. Otherwise we'll see more severe injuries, perhaps even loss of life.

I used to love road cycling, I was so fascinated by it as a 4-6 year old... That all changed when the fire nation attacked. Back in my childhood, the TdF had this larger than life presence in media, you could more or less watch it any time of day while it was on, sort of like Olympics or the World Cup. And of course the riders were national heroes; it seemed like warriors facing each other. In the city I grew up in, there was a bike race with a 3km loop at the end with a lot of elevation change which the riders went through 3 times. Luckily, that part of the track was right next to my house so I got to see people coming by a lot. Even then, there were motorbikes seemingly driving as fast as possible while as close as possible along the track to shoo the spectators back. I saw an elderly man get hit in the head by a passing motorcycle upwards of 60-70km/h, they needed to call an ambulance for him, he had a concussion and was bleeding. The motorcycle just kept on speeding down the road, I don't think the motorcyclist realized what he'd done but certainly didn't seem phased by making contact in the least since he kept going as close as possible to the pavement, occasionally brushing/bumping spectators. The complete disregard for safety from the people accompanying the race has always been traumatic for me, I can't say what I'd do to that guy but it's not pretty. Then I found out about doping; I noticed the crashes, the completely reckless motorbikes, the crowd having no sense of perspective or group intelligence much more intensely; everyone inches closer to the center of the road because your neighbor just inched closer and all of a sudden the road is barely a meter wide. I can no longer watch cycling on public roads because my blood pressure shoots up EVERY TIME the Peloton comes close to spectators. I *expect* some random brain amputee to cause a huge crash through their own incompetence, statistically speaking I can't convince myself it'd be unlikely. But when I see a spectator such as that French woman with her sign demolish half the field, I can no longer put the rage I feel into words. I want to vent my frustration at how awful humanity can be by punching her in the face until she agrees to do a public apology and do nothing but social work for the next decade. I know that's f**ked up but I need to vent how the thing I used to love fills me with so much rage now due to people being insufferably stupid to the point I want to smack their head into a wall until they change; which they won't.

I sometimes work as a traffic controller at sports events including bike races and even I have had to pull fans off the road, and I don't even work at large events but just small local races. Idiots are everywhere and some just don't seem to care and just cross the road right in front of the riders.

The more popular something becomes, the more people spectate who have no understanding of the sport itself, and only spectate to get a 'thrill' ... often at the expense of the sport.

It seems people in general are no longer capable of behaving in any manner which could be considered appropriate. It’s now all about social media clout and a moment of perceived fame, because that’s all they have to live for.

Some people are just selfish and some even want to drag others to their mess. As a cyclist, driver and motorbike rider I try to obey every single rule and polite but in the end people with their phones or distracted or for pure evil sake(yeah real psychos) or just bad luck will get you on the floor or hospital.

I think that getting the motor vehicles off the course would be a good start. I think that's a big part of the lack of respect for the race course. Yeah I know that would change things like wheel changes and camera angles but so be it.

Well, this is what happens when you do events in public roads. Just be thankful that the “people of peace” haven’t set their eyes on this event yet.

The problem is these are public roads. Most people dont care about the bike race, and some even hate it because it a disturbance. Thats why you have saboteurs. I remember a triathlon that went right by my place in college and to go to the pool across the street could only be done by going to a designated crossing almost a mile down the road. It was only a problem for 8 hours, but still it was annoying. I can imagine the tour de France having many years its something that causes problems for people for long times multiple years until they snap.

Sorry, I know I shouldn't but I can never help- but smile a little when I see a sudden tangle of lycra and bike wheels . I live in an area where for some reason theres high number lycra warriors clogging up the narrow bendy roads. The amount of appointments I've missed because they monopolize the roads in their rank and file cycling and refuse to let you pass. So when I see this I think, awesome, they don't like being inconvenienced either.

This gives me de ja vu as rally fan. For decades fans would lien the course and get as close to the cars as possible, even playing "chicken" with them in the middle of the road. Seems regardless of what sport or discipline some fans really lack common sense or intelligence.
