#MonsalTrail #PeakDistrict #Derbyshire
The Monsal Trail is a cycling, horse riding and walking trail in the Derbyshire Peak District. It was constructed from a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands junction railway, built by the Midland Railway in 1863 to link Manchester with London, which closed in 1968. The Monsal Trail is about 8.5 miles in length and opened in 1981. It starts at the Topley Pike junction in Wye Dale, three miles East of Buxton, and runs to Coombs Viaduct, one mile South-East of Bakewell. It follows the valley of the river Wye. The trail passes through Blackwell Mill, Millets Dale, Cressbrook, Monsal Dale, Hassop and Bakewell. The trail has numerous landmarks including 19th century line kilns, Headstone Viaduct, Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill and Hassop railway station, and passes through six tunnels.

I had done a D of E training trip to this spot so this video brings back a decent few memories. It really goes to show that the world can have its problems but places like these never change. Never flaw.

I did this ride on my bike. The full distance. For a 66 year old in good health I was happily pooped when I arrived home. It's a great ride.

We were expecting a nice easy ride with it all being fairly flat but were certainly shattered afterwards, clearly not as fit as we had thought but still a beautiful ride.. Thanks for watching 👍😊

That's very good thanks for posting. You both answered several questions I had about the trail. I wanted to see the Tunnels section mainly - especially the longest section. I don't have the mobility to explore such places or the Fells etc, and this allows me to do it Virtually. All the best you two..

@@ExploringWithEmAndStu When my back is OK to travel, my German Shepherd likes to pull me around here and there (to the shops etc). But it would be a good promotion of such tails to open them out more to special chairs. It's not just for cyclists and walkers. I think I'll explore that a bit.

Well from memory there's a carpark at the Buxton end of the trail I think its actually in Blackwell and I believe there's a bit of a sleep slope at the beginning but the rest of the trail is relatively flat so it might be feasible for a wheelchair user 👍

4 questions if you could help that would be great. 1) Is this trail 100% off road? 2) where's the best place to park at the start? 3) where's the best place for some dinner? 4) is it an easy ride doing it there and back in a day no problem? Thinking of cycling it with my wife and 2 kids. great video, love the relaxed approach, we do a lot of cycling close by but would love to get out on off rd easy routes to widen our choices.
@ExploringWithEmAndStu
@ExploringWithEmAndStu 2 года назад
Hi there.. I'll answer all you're questions the best we can.. Yes as far as I can remember its all along a bridal path and no road cycling needed.. we park at the pay and display car park just west of Blackwell Mill, its quite popular especially in high season so arrive as early as you can.. Some of the old station buildings along the route are now Cafés where you can get some food or a short ride into Bakewell at the end will give you plenty of food options but we've always taken a packed lunch to be on the safe side.. The whole route is relatively flat with a slight gravely surface in areas so best for either mountain or hybrid bicycles, preferably not thin road tires.. There's always been plenty of young families cycling it when we've been and dispite us not being particularly fit we managed it in an afternoon including stopping for breaks and photos along the way.. Hope that all helps abit, any further questions please feel free to ask. Its a beautiful route and definitely work the effort.. Thanks for watching 😊

As this was double track line in the old days its ashame one side isn't preserved railway for steam trains and the other line the path as a shared route. Im modeling this Midland Railway line in My house probably the most scenic railway line in all of England.
@ExploringWithEmAndStu
@ExploringWithEmAndStu 3 года назад
Yes its certainly the most beautiful old train line we've ever been too, would be nice to see steam train running along there again but also retain a path for the walkers 👍
@steamgent4592
@steamgent4592 3 года назад
@@ExploringWithEmAndStu There is a similar situation in the United States @ the Western Maryland Scenic Railway. The tracks were kept but later used for Steam and several years later a fence went down the middle and the other side was made available to bikers and walkers. It seems to work out well and no one has ever been injured. As tourist trains run rather slow "if" there was a derailment the odds of any real injuries would be almost next to none unless it was due to someone jumping the fence as a train came. Then we know what could happen then but that would be their fault for trespassing. I'd love to see it happen and the Peak Rail line restored in a similar fashion. The scenery is just breathtakingly gorgeous and would be good for business, tourism, and tax revenue.

@MTB_Derbyshire
@MTB_Derbyshire Год назад
@@grumpy-dad3701 Obviously everyone is different in terms of fitness and stamina but I wouldn't say the Monsal trail on its own is not going to be anywhere near enough. It's only 8.5 miles. So if you did there and back should take about 3 hours max including stops if you are dawdling. Think you'd have a long day at camp I reckon. You'd be better off combining it with the Tissington trail (13 miles) and/or high peak trai (17.5 miles some of which is shared with the Tissington trail).
