As a returning cyclist I should like to take this opportunity to thank the van driver who probably will never see this but who stayed behind me yesterday while I slogged uphill on the A594 between Maryport and Dovenby. He obeyed the double white lines which are in place because of the blind bends in the road and waited for me to reach the left turn I was aiming for, On that stretch of road there isn't really anywhere to pull in to let vehicles past so I pedalled as fast as I was able (which wasn't much) and I hope he wasn't too badly inconvenienced. As I turned left I gave him a thumbs up and a wave. Not all road users are idiots so thank you to him and vicariously to all others who are prepared to allow time and space to those who need it.

I wasn’t the van driver but I am a van, pickup and car driver and I would have done the same. I’ve been followed by people with their hand constantly on their horn because I wouldn’t overtake a cyclist. Whilst it might appear infuriating, having to wait, if you do the math or if you’re fortunate enough to see someone in front overtake the cyclist by the time you get to overtake and when you approach the next junction/set of lights.. Sometimes even 15 minutes later.. You make up absolutely no time whatsoever. If my van had the guts to overtake I would consider my options more when overtaking sub-10mph vehicles on double whites but 115bhp in a 6 ton, 10 meter long vehicle doesn’t exactly scream “I can do this” to anyone with an ounce of common sense. I guess that shows common sense is a rare attribute.

Several hundred is an understatement. A small van or even a large sedan, station wagon, or any EV with their heavy battery packs can easily weigh close to or over 1500 kilograms. That's not a couple hundred more, that's over a thousand more. Not that it matters much if you do get hit as a cyclist, but it really just further highlights how the energy stored in a cyclist and their ability to take an impact is absolutely nothing compared to the energy stored in a moving vehicle. Even at urban speeds they could break every bone in your body before the driver even gets a chance to hit the brakes.

A suggestion for an educational video would be for Ashley to drive a van around a busy city and also narrow country roads with cameras to show how little the van driver can see. Most cyclists and most motorists have never driven a van in a busy city and don't realise how difficult visibility can be. A van such as a Vauxhall Vivaro has terrible mirrors and the basic models a low powered 1.5 diesel engine and would be a challenge for non experienced van drivers as they have no go at all when loaded and visibility is very poor. A Ford Transit Custom is the opposite and has fantastic mirrors, better side blind spot view than any car.

There have been many injuries and even a few deaths in the past few years due to cyclists running lights/crossings and plowing into pedestrians. It only took a quick google to find that out. Having said that, I think the bigger problem is the cyclists that seemingly are not bothered about their own life.
@QuincelSC
@QuincelSC 2 года назад
Yes, on average 2 pedestrians a year die in the UK due to collisions with bikes while around 300-350 die due to collisions with motor vehicles (including 50 or so who die after being hit on the pavement). That's risk, but clearly much less risk (even if you adjust for the number of journeys taken by each mode of transport). A cyclist doing something stupid is far more likely to put their own life at risk than someone else's, while a driver is at least equally likely to kill someone else than themself.

Scrolling through comments looking for this response. Putting the blame entirely on the cyclist here was unfair, the onus shouldn't always be on the cyclist to be hyper vigilant of drivers making bad untimely emerges. Cyclist had the right of way and needed to slow down for the car. When learning to drive we are taught if your emerge causes another driver to slow down or change direction, you shouldn't have pulled out. This is the exact same principle!

Car started to move forward from side road when he should've waited. Cam car joins a queue of traffic in road I assume as he stopped. If cyclist was looking ahead he'd have seen the queue and the junction, identified the increased risk and be slowing ready to filter past the cars at a sensible speed. White car driver and cyclist could've (should've) done better. Neither are blameless IMO.

When I cycled 5 days a week a few years ago I would watch countless people run red lights and I would still make it to my destination at the same time they do or quicker because I used the 1 minute stopped at the lights to recover and could then cycle quicker and overtake them again. I would pass the same cyclists multiple times in one trip. Whilst not only being safer I also had the advantage of being fitter too. Clip #1: Re cyclist joining a live running lane (i.e. a regular main road). I sometimes see similar when a cyclist is turning left out of a side street into a main road...and barely even slows down or looks. I guess they figure that due to their narrow width, they can just turn and slot themselves onto the main road. In this particular clip, the cyclist doesn't even take into consideration the extra width of being on a 3 wheeler.

I’ve encountered drivers doing similar acts to cyclists, like one day I was waiting to turn right in the correct place on the road indicating and waiting for the traffic to clear and as soon as I turned into the junction a van overtakes and squeezed passed, guess some drivers waiting get annoyed because cyclists can’t accelerate that quickly so while many drivers feel they could of turned in sooner cyclists can’t Time to have more police cars out on the roads to look for dangerous cyclists and drivers
@Kromaatikse
@Kromaatikse 2 года назад
Oddly enough, the typical tricycle (or towed two-wheel trailer) is scarcely wider than the handlebars of a bicycle - a matter of a couple of inches if the handlebars are of the wide, straight type suited for urban riding. It just *looks* wider to following traffic because they can see the footprint more easily. Because a tricycle doesn't need to steer for balance, it may actually take up fractionally less road space in practice. Still, this would have been an excellent time to use the horn to alert this particular cyclist to the possibility of following traffic.

Some cyclists seem to rely upon the concept " They're the vulnerable road user and people should prioritise them whilst they can act how they like ". I'm good with cyclists and like to give them room and safety whenever, but the ones who try to prove a point are like pouring petrol on a fire just to significantly highlight that there's a fire happening . If they feel that vulnerable and needy for attention when something minor and easily fixable happens, they shouldn't be riding a bike.

Of the 220,000 members of British Cycling or Cycling UK, the vast majority (over 90%) have a driving license. Interestingly, there are 30,000 or so convictions a year for driving without a license or while disqualified. Kind of moot. There's no evidence that passing a test reduces the number of people killed and seriously injured by motor vehicles. Even cherry picking cyclists as Ashley does here never really shows any dangerous cyclists. It's like trying to conflate someone who is blowing bubbles with someone who is throwing bricks. That's where Ashley's 'whatboutism' fails. His day job is getting people to pass a test, some of whom will go on to kill and maim other people. He's not teaching anyone to drive - he's teaching them to pass a test. People learn to drive by sitting next to (or behind) selfish and impatient family members and peers for years. Then Ashley et al spend a few weeks telling them how to behave to fool the testing centre, they get a license, throw away the L plates and drive the way their dad or mates do.

I clip #4, the cammer @3:31 is most definitely the one at fault. That was an unsafe joining from a side turning by pulling into the main road then immediately stopping (I'm assuming that it was not an emergency stop). At the point the car crossed the give-way line, the cyclist had already reached the junction. Would the cammer have done that if it was a car or a motorcycle? It's true that cycles cannot brake as fast as a car, and especially on a wet road, but forcing somebody to brake heavily by crossing a give way line is not acceptable anyway. In this case, wet road and a cycle? Then the motorists should not be expecting a cycle to pull an emergency brake move like that in the first place, yet we hear no criticism of the cammer. This is what the Highway Code says 172 The approach to a junction may have a ‘Give Way’ sign or a triangle marked on the road. You MUST give way to traffic on the main road when emerging from a junction with broken white lines across the road. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10(1),16(1) & 25 In giving way, you absolutely have to take account of the traffic that's on the road, how fast it is going and the ability for it to stop in time. In effectively, absolving the cammer of fault by not criticising his/her driving and saying the cyclist is at fault by riding too fast gives entirely the wrong message to motorists, and contradicts the Highway Code. The hierarchy of road users places the primary responsibility on those in the less vulnerable user to pay special care of vulnerably road users. That cyclist was not breaking the law, was not travelling at excess speed and yet is somehow required to be able to brake to a halt in the width of a side road because somebody pulls out and then immediately stops. It's the motorist's responsibility in this case to note the wet road, observe the cyclist and not pull such a dangerous manoeuvre. This is absolutely NOT in the same category as dangerous slipstreaming or some of the other dangerous tactics in the video as a whole. That's a cyclist doing maybe 20 mph on a slight downhill on a wet road. Requiring cyclists to slow down to, say, 10 mph every time they come to a side junction just in case is not something in the Highway Code, nor do I see it in official advice anywhere. Yes, a cyclist (like any other road user) has to be able to stop in the space they can see is clear, but if it's suddenly occupied by somebody performing an unsafe merge, that's another thing entirely.
@stephenclark9917

Exactly, and the white car behind failed to stop at the stop line and took the attention of the cyclist. The cyclist wasn't travelling fast.
@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 2 года назад
@@stephenclark9917 Ashley has some sort of obsession with this sort of thinking. There's another video where with another unsafe emerge by a car from a side turning where he blames the cyclist for not being able to stop in time. As you say, in this clip, the cyclists attention was also momentarily taken away in the middle of this emergency braking manouevre when the second car starts to cross the give way line, again without any criticism. I'm all for warning cyclists (and other road users) to be aware of dangerous situations, but telling every cyclist that, in effect, that they've no business doing quite ordinary speeds, like 20 mph or so, because they can't stop as quickly as a car is ridiculous and has absolutely no backing in law or the Highway Code. Yes, ride so you can stop within the distance you can see is clear, and take care round the normal things like parked cars. However, we don't ask car drivers in a 20 mph area to slow down to 10 mph because a car might pull out of the side street in front of them.
@J1mston
@J1mston 2 года назад
@@TheEulerID I think Ashley's thinking is "what can I do to improve the situation" rather than "what should others be doing to improve the situation." The reasoning behind thinking like this is that you can only control what you are doing, not what everyone else is doing. @TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 2 года назад
@@J1mston That's a warning for cyclists to be aware, and not a cyclist fail. In this case, the cammer is 100% at fault, yet there's no mention of it. Also, the remedy, which appears to be slow down to a speed where you can stop even if somebody pulls a stupid stunt is not a practical one. Just how slowly do cyclists have to travel when approaching a side junction with cars ready to join? As it is, the collision that did occur was at a very slow speed, and the fact that it wasn't serious was entirely down to the cyclist's action and not that of the cammer. This is entirely unlike the other clips, where cyclists are engaging in dangerous behaviour or breaking the law. A warning of the dangers, fine but this amounted to victim blaming. As for yielding, then I fail to see where that comes into it at all. There was not opportunity for the cyclist to yield as the car emerged from the junction and stopped almost immediately when the cycle couldn't have been more than about 10 metres away.

8:30 - I really very much dislike people who just decide to not stop at a red light. Sure it looks safe, but you can't see where someone else might have a green light. Personally, I turn on my blinkers when changing lanes on a completely empty highway at 4 in the morning, and I check my inside mirror before slowing down when I'm the only one on a deserted country road. It's the little things that will pay off if the unexpected ever does happen. It would never even cross my mind to run a red light, not even if all other sides of the intersection are completely empty, and especially not at a busy intersection where there's an inequality in vulnerability.

I'm often very critical of your comments on cycling, but most of these are spot on. For the clip at 3:40 the issue is actually that the cyclist insists on staring at the emerging driver (the cycling equivalent of blaring the horn). He would have been perfectly capable of stopping if he had even glanced ahead. For the clip at 3:57, that cyclist is probably going a maximum of 20 mph and is no closer than a car driver would be to the parked cars. The cyclist also has two escape routes, one is to brake hard, the other is to veer to his right. This is a good example of why motorists need to be going a lot slower than most do when driving next to parked cars. For the clip at 8:00 it's interesting that every single road user that we see in that clip fails to stop at a red light. Every motorist on the other legs of the junction has illegally entered the ASL, every single cyclist jumps the red light. It's interesting to see that the cyclist who run cameras and report stuff to the Met say that the Met (and other forces) have absolutely no interest in prosecuting red light running into the ASL.

@mattwardman

I don't think Ashley is doing that - just only remarking on the person on the bike. There have been several times when eg car drivers pull into the cycle box on an advanced stop line, and Ashley has not remarked on that aspect whilst commenting on something else. IMO the clip 4 cammer failed to pay due care to observe the cyclist who was in a good, prominent road position and close, and pulled out into traffic when it was dangerous to others to do so. People on bikes count as traffic. The white Porsche also failed to observe - cyclist was visible, not least over the bonnet of other car, and pulled out rather than pause and observe. IMO cyclist may have been going too fast downhill on greasy conditions. Cyclist was understandably focussed on the white car which was making to pull out - could have been an over the bonnet. Cyclist also imo perhaps gave insufficient weight to the impatience / poor skills / doziness of both car drivers. Sometimes we have to assume they are out to get us, and in a collision the person on a bike will always lose.

This. When the cyclist comes into view they are already beyond the entrance to the junction. Side road lanes ~3m. Two + island. So the cyclist is ~8m away when the car finishes pulling out. (maybe 10m when it starts). So basically the camera car pulled out within official DRY stopping distances from 20mph, cutting the riders margin by a third on what looks to be a damp road. It looked to me like the rider was already braking at this point to avoid the car in front of the filming vehicle. Then the following car noses out and they react, resulting in a skid (because the cam car has already pushed from braking with margin to full emergency stop.) Could they have mitigated by riding slower; yes. But if you are arguing this then you are effectively arguing for 10mph speed limits anywhere with junctions (because to safely stop with enough clearance from the cam car that is the max speed per official stopping distances in the dry (yet alone when it gets wet)).
@davet2555
@davet2555 2 года назад
@@qwertycycling7851 I think the 10mph speed limit is a misinterpretation of the suggestion of slowing for circumstances. Here there is a junction with cars looking to cross into and from the junction, visibility is limited for cars pulling out, and it is probable there is stationary traffic on the other side of the junction. Entering this space as the cyclist (or any other road user) leaves only the option of braking if not spotted, there is no plan B so wither don't enter until the traffic clears or do it a such a speed that if pulled out on you can stop. I suspect I might have stopped before the junction on my bike or entered at walking pace on my bike and would have the advantage of a horn. Taking responsibility means assessing the risk and the options and adjusting speed appropriately. Even 10mph could have been too fast

Clip # 3 @ 2:07: Petrol at 169.9 / litre. Would be a dream to get that price now and yet that wasn't all that long ago - May 2022. As for drafting behind a bus, yes totally wrong and I was thinking exactly the same thing regarding the aspect of being hidden and an oncoming vehicle making a right turn immediately after the bus has passed. Indeed, for that very reason, when turning, don't do a very immediate "follow through" until the other vehicle has passed and that you can fully see and know that nothing unexpected is lurking right behind it. This includes cars too, which may be towing a low trailer.

I used to do it a bit at lower speeds when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, but couldn't keep up once they got past about 12 mph, and also I hated the fumes from the hot, oily engines. Nowadays, I'm constantly aware of the risk of being caught out when waiting at busy junctions because drivers tailgate so closely that they become hidden from view until the last second. Thankfully, I'm alert to it, but it's still shocking to see how many drivers do it, especially to large vehicles.

On drafting busses - it very much depends on the cyclist, the bike and the roads. If it's under 20mph and you aren't highly fit and skilled, don't. If it's fast, say 40mph and you are really fit on a good bike and it's a good distance travelled, you do actually save tonnes of time. It's really difficult to keep up with the bus' initial acceleration only a very strong person can do it, but once you're there it's relatively easy to maintain 40mph plus even up hills and I knocked a good 10mins off my commute. I personally hate red light jumpers more than almost anything, I also hate cyclists who think they can do anything they like because "I'm only on a bike". In the last few months I have seen cyclists cycle the wrong way up one way streets (and busy streets with lots of traffic), go the wrong way around a large roundabout to get to the exit they want (why not dismount and walk the bike to the exit you want if you can't be arsed to cycle all the way around it), cycling on unlit roads on black bikes, in black clothing with no lights or even a reflector and then wonder why they get hit by people who can't see them until the last minute. I have a responsibility to drive safely to protect myself and other road users. On the other hand I am driving a car with airbags, if I get it wrong I have a very high probability of surviving an accident, if you are a cyclist and get it wrong you have a higher probability of going to A&E or the morgue. Saying I" am only on a bike" doesn't make you immune from following the Highway Code or using common sense.

You make a good point about cyclists being selective about what laws they will follow. They claim the rights of an automobile in some cases, and the rights of a pedestrian in others. Thing is, they are not entirely either, and relatively few streets are designed to safely accommodate them. Bicycles and cars don't mix well, nor do bikes and pedestrians. I've seen videos of cities that are less car-centric (such as in the Netherlands) that design bike lanes and intersections that are safer for everyone, but they're difficult to retrofit in most urban areas.

It looks like a particularly steep street, you Ashley, as someone who cycles, must know how important momentum is to cyclists? How would you feel about having to set off on that street? What would have have happened if the motorist had proceeded down the street and you didn't have time to react and stop and change into an easier gear? @sedumjp 2 года назад
@@aardwolf21 the old toe clips were dangerous in some situations, but we are going back to the days before clipless pedals which is mid 80s (for pros, and probably late 80s for the rest of us). The old style pedals had a steel cage over the pedal body and then a leather strap which you pulled tight to secure you foot onto the pedal. Before you could stop and get your foot off the pedal, you had to reach down and release the buckle (like unbuckling a shoe), and often you had a cleat on the bottom of the pedal which meant you could not just pull it back and out. So basically if you didn't release the buckle then you were goinng to literally fall off the bike with your feet stuck as firmly to the pedal as Boris Johnson was to a glass of wine during lockdown. But you can't get those pedals anymore (unless you have a historic bike), modern clipless pedals just require you to twist your foot and your foot is free. Most offer a tension adjustment so if you are a beginner or are stopping lots on a commute, then you can set the tension to low and unclip really easily. So I very much doubt the round and round cyclist was doing that to stop unclipping, he was just an idiot.

Good video. Pretty hard-hitting commentary there, but I don't think any of it was misplaced. I did like how you didn't just identify the faults of the cyclists but also those in motorised vehicles too. It's one thing to complain about cyclists, many of whom really don't have the road sense they should have, but as a driver we need to identify and respond appropriately to these hazards. There is one cyclist-breaking-the-law scenario that I have some sympathy for: passing the stop line where there is no Advanced Stop Box (ie. stopping ahead of it, _not_ going through the junction). This is because it's infinitely safer than being caught between two motor vehicles as they pull off. I don't do it myself and it is illegal, but as I say, I'm inclined to be less critical of that than all the other foolishness I see, and I definitely don't agree with riding through red traffic lights and crossing the junction. Actually, I'm also not too fussed about the turning van cyclist just hopping on the pavement for a short distance - illegal but if it solves a problem and doesn't subject anyone to increased risk, I'd do that - though I hope I wouldn't have put myself in that particular position in the first place.

This video is made from a car brain prespective. There's nothing wrong with cyclists running red lights, that's the reason states like colorado allow it because it is actually safer to do so. Most of the traffic laws exist because motor vehicles can kill and injure, not cyclists. The problem is society trying the least and just trying to shoehorn cycling into auto infrastructure. Cyclists run reds because it makes sense to do so, you have better view than the driver, you cannot seriously injure or kill someone unlike the driver etc That female cyclist at 8:19 did everything perfectly, she waited at the traffic light, till the intersection was clear to proceed, look around and ran the red. Which again, studies show is safer than being rear ended by a vehicle.
